I fail to see how this album could be perceived as anything but awful, yet I only ever see it get high praise. Am I just some fucking uncultured musical degenerate?

People jack off so hard to this album because it's more difficult to criticize something unfamiliar.

When you say you like something straightforward, you put yourself out there where someone can come along and point out its flaws. It's more digestible, and we can all kind of see where those flaws are.

People who can't deal with criticism are terrified of this.

Who knows what's even intentional on an album like this? Was it inventive? Sure. Did it influence a lot of important musicians who came after? Yeah. But I think the real reason you see it pop up everywhere is that people can hide behind how challenging it is. Anyone can say "you just don't get it," but how many people get it themselves, as if there's something to get? It's not as if the lyrics have any substance.

It's easy to call something brilliant when no one can prove you wrong. It's much harder to do that when there's a basis on which to build criticism.

The reason this album is awful to you is because you don't like it, and you don't yet base your claimed musical taste on an inferiority complex.

Yes, you are.

>It's not as if the lyrics have any substance.
wrong

It's great. The songs are very complex and difficult to play, yet the magic band does a great job making them their own.

if you're not familiar with Free Jazz and the aesthetics of it you will not like it

...

Da

What's that one song off of Trout Mask Replica that sounded like Slint I forget.

there's not much to get, it's just free jazz infused with blues and rock
I like all of those things, so of course I like TMR

why trout tho?

I REFUSE TO GO BACK TO YOUR FROWNLAND

I don't get why people pretend this album is so impenetrable. It's just a catchy blues-inspired album with wacky rhythms and lyrics.

Listen to more music then come back

Gotta listen.

its not something to get, it's not intellectual music, it's just music that follows beefhearts fucked up rules of rhythm. if you try to focus on how the drumming connects to one of the guitars, and then how that guitar connects to the other guitars, it slowly makes sense
