As part of my computer science degree scholarship, I have been offered a new laptop. I've narrowed it down to the 3 in the picture but am struggling to decide- any opinions would be greatly appreciated. I've been looking at reviews online and am tempted by the HP but I will be using it for work too so not sure if it's too heavy/bulky to take into uni?

Note: the MSI 1060 has 3GB memory, whereas the other two have 6GB.

Thanks

Omen

why?

I'd say take the HP, only downside is it only has an SSD and no hard drive but if you use a lot of cloud services like Dropbox it should be fine!

ThinkPad X230

Alternatively, a ThinkPad W530 with 32GB of memory, the optional GPU, a SSD and a nice screen. Your welcome :^)

I have the HP Omen, 17", i7, GTX 1070, 16 GB RAM, 4K Resolution and its shit. When im opening it up you can already hear some kind of screeching sound, you can see basically every fingerprint that has been on the keyboard / laptop (backside as well) and in general its getting hot as fuck almost to the point where u cant touch the table where the laptop was before (for like 30 minutes of playing BF1).
And that for a 2000€ thing. Dont. fucking. buy. it.

cooling seems to be an issue with most laptops, idk what to do about it lol. do you use a cooling stand?

If your fragile ego can handle a Mac, they're substantially better for software development. You don't need a 17 inch screen, and you don't need to play video games on your laptop. Once you make it to your junior year, all you're going to want is a terminal and not to wrestle with shitty hardware or broken drivers.

Well I used a other type of Laptop before and it didnt get as nearly as hot as this one.
Yeah I do use a cooling stand from time to time but it doesnt change shit.
As I said for something being that expensive its shitty made, looks fancy tho and thats what its all about it seems like.

Fuck off macfag

lol

Nigga forget gaming in a laptop, just buy a normal one w/o the dedicated card

yeah spending a thousand dollars for outdated technology seems like the best idea

> Mac better for software development
> Make software for an OS that < 1% of people use

Maybe if you're talking about iPhone development, but even then a mac is worthless trash because I set up a hackintosh VMWare VM and installed Xamarin on my host system then was able to use Visual Studio to develop cross platform mobile apps automatically and still debug iPhone apps with the mac VM. So basically macs are trash which serve no purpose except if you're an apple sheep.

>Implying I bought it today u fucking RETARD
>outdated technology
Whats outdated about it u moron LMAO

Yeah, I see tons of sbux fags doing software dev on these..., smfh

just to clarify, can't pick any random laptop- have to pick from the range offered. there are some 15" ones too which I'll post in a minute.

Thanks, I wanted to say it just to see how anti-Apple brigade would react.

> Make software for an OS that < 1% of people use
Yeah, because obviously, neither C or Java work on Mac, and browsers don't work the same on Unix-like OS.

...

and yet you recommended it.
Your reaction shows that a) you know you made a mistake and b) that you're very insecure about your buy. And you should be.
Apple is not a good product, they sell a feeling. The feeling of feeling better, superior.
It's fine if you are into that kind of thing, but don't recommend this meme for work. You need something serious for that, be it GNU/Linux, BSD or Windows.

also I've already finished first year, going into second year in September. I got the highest first year overall grade (96%) in the course history so was given a scholarship by my department.

I would recommend Windows 10 Professional

I have the MSI (almost. I don't have DVD rewriter on mine, but a GTX 1080 instead), used for gaming at first, but it's really fine for working, obviously. Only flaw I could find is in really GPU-intensive games, the left fan is misbalanced and makes huge noise for 30s.

what sort of temperatures do the cpu/gpu reach if you don't mind me asking?

You can do all that other stuff on a PC too though and save yourself thousands of dollars that Apple overcharges on their shit tier hardware.

Windows 10 has integrated Bash support via Ubuntu now. So no problems working in a unix-like enviroment

Highest ever was 74°C for GPU (badly optimized pc game), and 65°C for CPU. Usually, CPU is around 35-45, and GPU temperature is not checked unless the fan is on.

Of course you can.
But "shit tier hardware" regarding Apple is too much bait, man. Top-tier hardware and OS-integrated softwares are the two main interests for Mac over anything else.

that sounds pretty good, I've seen some reviews of similar range laptops where the gpu exceeds 90 celsius. thanks

And even then it's really easy to install a Linux VM or dual boot Linux on a PC if you really care about a unix environment. Probably much better choice than using Mac because Mac has its own nuances to building C programs that work on Linux especially if using Linux specific includes, and Linux is much more widely used in terms of C/C++ than Mac where you'd rather do C development on Linux on Mac.

Only reason for not using Mac are gaming, lack of money, or obsession with deconstructing/reconstructing everything in your PC. ('cause Macs won't let you such freedom)

i actually own the omen, my only complaint about it is that the charger is really finicky and stops charging real easily, otherwise it was a great purchase

other person above complained about the overheating and cooling system, has this been an issue for you? ty

I guess I could exceed 90°C if shut down both fans, played in a very hot room and started every game I bought from last Steam sales in separate windows all at once.

>Top tier hardware
>$2799 Macbook Pro 2017 edition has a whopping 2.9 GHz processor, 16 GB RAM, Radeon Pro 560 with 4 GB video memory

Uhh maybe top-tier hardware from 10 years ago but those specs are ridiculously bad for the price. You can build a better desktop PC for $500 and a better Windows laptop for $1200.

Any detail on differences regarding C development on Mac or Linux? (I defend Mac in this thread, but I'm don't use it)

If you look at the performance specs only, sure. If you take maintenance in account, that's another thing. Macs are built to work as they're built, while other PCs manufacturers use parts not specifically made to work with each other.

pick one

Asus

/thread

if you you want it to last for a LONG time always go with HP

None of this is true. I work with C and C++ for a living. There are platform specific differences between development for linux, osx, and Windows, but nothing that makes using a mac any harder than the others. If anything the opposite will be true, as competent IDEs are more likely to be available on osx than Linux.

get a macbook unironically

I'm sure Xamarin will take off just like Apache Cordova and Phonegapp did.

What do you mean you've never heard of either of those?

My classmate had the HP Omen. Build quality was shit; touchpad stopped responding within a week, and it gets incredibly hot, even while not under load. I personally would go with the ROG; ASUS build quality is pretty good

You see OP, the problem with these gaming laptops is that they all tend to overheat. Your components don't like being warm and their life expectancy gets reduced by it. If you're gonna do hardcore gaming on it, be prepared to have either of these machines dead after 2 years. They might last longer of course, but don't count on it. If you can, get a stationary PC, if not, I'd opt for an office version of whatever, because those are usually built better.
