Whether they're superior now is up for debate, but it still remains true that to have conquered the world they would have had to, at some point in the past, been the superior race, and smart enough to ensure they would continue to be the top race all the way up till now.

Your logic is sound. However, the premise is not a take over exactly, but an infiltration and a group survival strategy that other groups lack. For example, look at the Jewish control of banking. For most of their respective histories, Christianity and Islam considered any loan with interest ursury. If only one group of people can give the most profitable loans, then you'd expect them to control those institutions initially. It's been a few hundred years and disproportionate numbers remain.
