/noiserock/: please make this a thing edition

>What is noise rock?
It doesn't follow musical standards, and can typically be described as abrasive.

>Where do I start?
Big Black - Songs About Fucking
The Jesus Lizard - GOAT
Distorted Pony - Punishment Room

>Now what?

Starting topic:
How does Albini make his guitar sound like that?

sort of unrelated but swans weren't no wave. they were noise rock. same with sonic youth, glenn branca and live skull

anyone got anything like this album? i hate the whole math rock phase in noise rock

youtube.com/watch?v=sPrbuPYTBLw&t=561s&index=4&list=LLj4TooiuHJba-_lenofUxlg

Someone recommended this in the last thread, or maybe two threads ago, I don't remember.
Not allot in the genre is going to sound the same, though.

thanks for the rec anyway. will listen plus i like how ambient the first track sounds

>no Flipper on that chart
fucking dropped.
sheet metal guitar picks and sexual frustration

There you are

GO LISTEN THIS

This chart needs Boris on it

I don't like the Jesus Lizard and Puss is a better album than Goat
GNOD has aotysf
He uses steel picks that are notched
He uses an aluminum neck guitar (travis bean) with humbucker pickups
He uses only one pedal besides a noise gate, which is a special distortion called a harmonic percolator that was only made once in the 1980s by a man who owned a pawn shop in Florida
He runs his guitar through a bass amp head

You do it.

Don't know what to replace
wolf eyes
Glenn Branca was classical actually

thoughts on the new GToss?

not quite my style from what I've heard so far, but I'll give it a few more chances.
It's too cheery imo.

Anyone know any bands like Dazzling Killmen? Also does anyone know where I can find a rip of their Lounge Ax cassette?

>Big Black - Songs About Fucking
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DON'T DO IT MAN

LISTEN TO ATOMIZER FOR GOD'S SAKE

Why?
You don't like it?

SAF too punk sounding, Atomizer is a better intro to the genre/band/albini imo and is generally more essential.

This, when I listened to SAF first and I thought it was alright, but when I heard Atomizer it's like I was being physically and emotionally abused

I love noise rock. >Teenage Jesus and The Freaks
Jerks*

How could I be so careless? I also misspelled Savages and Blind Savage God unfortunately.

good list. you might want to add the Laughing Hyenas and Cop Shoot Cop

Is this noise rock?

I love it.

I listened to this a few days ago and absolutely loved it, what do you guys think?

>What is noise rock?
pic related

yeah, it's pretty tame. their old stuff is worth checking out though

its proto-mathrock so basically, yeah

fuck yes

that start is shit though.
filht + dude incredible is a better combination

What's the optimal amount of distortion pedals to have?

I only have one, and a flanger.
Set correctly with overdrive, and it can make some weird ass feedback.
Just do what you want within your means.

bump

Boris is my favorite band but there's gotta be something there worse than Wolf Eyes, since I haven't listened to the whole chart.

how can you be "proto" math rock 8 years after the genre's creation and 2 years after the most famous album from the genre?

perhaps I got my geneology wrong

perhaps.
In case you were wondering (I meant 7 years), this album is from '86
youtube.com/watch?v=CHQtfUBOPcg

which album?

Either Pink or Akuma no Uta

>Sonic Youth
no way I can take this chart seriously

>le sonic youth is bad meme
boredoms isn't even noise rock

not as abrasive as gay disco, it's more zoloish than noisy
i liked it skull pop onwards but not something i'll listen to much

early boredoms were

bump

goat noise rock album coming through

any of you fuckers listening to the new yowie?

This has me interested in signal detection theory.
Hm.

anyone got some recs for some really angry/depressive shit?

Kengo Iuchi
Brainbombs
No Trend
Rusted Shut

Is Endless, Nameless by Nirvana noise rock? If so then I wanna inti noise rock and if not then I wanna find more music that are similar to whatever genre that song would fall into

Distorted Pony

It's perfect, wouldn't call it noise rock though.

thanks guys, I love Brainbombs and I'll check out these other guys

If it's on Bleach, Insesticide or In Utero then it was at the very least influenced by noise rock.

What pedals were they using on this album? It's my favorite guitar tone and I just can't figure out how they got it.

youtube.com/watch?v=AA1e255zVow&t=474s

bump

can you point to a specific section you'd like to figure out the tone for? just skipping through I'm hearing a lot of different tones so it's hard to say how you might be able to replicate it

Particularly the first song, that one sounds amazing to me.

What gear do you have already?

none

It sounds like you just need an amp with overdrive / a gain nob.
Or a pedal which does the same.

This guy seems to be right, I don't hear anything that you'd really need a specific pedal for. Maybe try a fairly high gain fuzz?

Ill make an updated essential noise rock chart, give me albums you think are essential to the genre

I Believe in You by Mob

This thread needs more Conformists. These guys have been toiling away in STL unrecognized for years, but their last 2 (or 3) albums have been produced (recorded, whatever) by Steve Albini. Great stuff.

youtube.com/watch?v=TcqV9X-Gcvw

sounds.theconformists.com/album/divorce

Try and give me some more, ill just fill up the chart, listen to all the ones i havent and order them from least abrasive to most abrasive. Ill try and put together a really helpful, understandable, and well put together chart

Big Black - Atomizer
Sonic Youth - Confusion is Sex
The Jesus Lizard - Goat
Swans - Filth
Lightning Bolt - Fantasy Empire
Shellac - 1000 hrts

These^ are all classics

Flipper - Album: Generic Flipper
Distorted Pony - Punishment Room
Brain Bombs - Urge to Kill

^Show the hardcore punk aspect to the sound

If you're planning on putting on more than one album from the same people, Big Black - "Songs About Fucking" is essential, because of its sheer popularity as THE noise rock album.

That's the old stuff though, it's shown on these charts already.
Hideous Sun Demon - Industry Connections
Gorilla toss
and
Are some examples of newer noise-rock things going on.

I plan on putting more than one only if theyre discography is pretty prolific, much like big blacks.
>Distorted Pony - Punishment Room
My man! such an incredible album.
should i put White Light/White Heat? none of the other charts have it, but isnt it THE first noise rock album?

I'm not sure if it really fits, but maybe in a separate section for the historical relevance?

If i were to put a seperate section for historical relevance/ influences on the Genre, what other albums should i put down? Les Rallizes denudes? Déficit des années antérieures? early no wave artists?
im not exactly the best when it comes to noise rock sorry

I was thinking you could just single out the one album, for the novelty of saying "this is the first noise rock album".

Ahh i get you, also i see how it doesnt fit.
>shes busy sucking on my ding dong

bump

Anyone know some shit similar to Brainbombs?

Why Vision Creation Newsun and not Soul Discharge? And 1000 Hurts isn't nearly that noisy.

Face Of Collapse is brilliant, brilliant stuff.

>boredoms isn't even noise rock
What.
Boredoms - Soul Discharge
Coughs - Bent Babies

Fushitsusha - 1989 live
Boredoms - Pop Tatari

wouldnt fright makes right be a better choice
>fushitsusha - 1989 live
my nigga

>wouldnt fright makes right be a better choice
Fright Makes Right is too inconsistent with how noisy it is. I enjoy it more when an album is consistently something, be it noisy, loud, quiet, melodic, etc. than a lot of high moments of something.

Ruins is the closest to noise rock that I listen too

true, i guess it would be a better choice for noise rock. good taste tho bruv!

I just want to say that I love Brainiac
RIP Tim Taylor

Any one know of any similar album to this?

soul discharge sucks

it's a fun in a gimmicky sense though

Keiji Haino - Black Blues [electric]
Keiji Haino, Oren Ambarchi, and Jim O'Rourke - Imikuzushi
Fushitsusha - Secret Black Box
The Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat
Flipper - Album - Generic Flipper
Chrome - Alien Soundtracks
Airway - Live at LACE
Half Japanese - 1/2 Gentlemen / Not Beasts
Fushitsusha - 1991 Live

>soul discharge sucks
"No." One of the greatest noise rock, and rock albums, of all time. You will maybe find one or two albums with as much vocal freedom as Soul Discharge.

How's 1991 live compare to 1989?

Both are great. 1989 is better, but that's more of a testament to how incredible 1989 is.

thats alot of keiji haino

As there should be

If les rallisez denudes counts then its most definitely essential

dude you fucking know it!, les rallizes denudes is the best fucking band in the world

Amplifier Worship

...

Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 - Strangers from the Universe
Big Black - Atomizer
High Rise - II
Unwound - Fake Train
Cop Shoot Cop - Consumer Revolt
Butthole Surfers - Psychic Powerless
Unsane - Unsane
Grazhdanskaya Oborona - Russkoe Pole Eksperimentov

I would say it is maybe try listening to Lightning Bolt there some what similar to that song

...

>Boredoms - Pop Tatari
Everybody needs to listen to this.

>but isnt it THE first noise rock album?
No? Nihilist Spasm Band and Destroy All Monsters came first
