Atlantis is everything from the flooding of the Black Sea to possible invaders from the Atlantic. The description of the island matches some of what Santorini would have looked like and the harbor is a description of Canopus near Alexandria. Plato had traveled that region and used descriptions he had seen or heard of to describe Atlantis.
If there was a real, ancient Atlantic, sea-faring power that attacked Old World elements, then it would likely originate from Mesoamerican elements such as the Olmec or the Terra Preta-making Amazon river civilization. If it could sustain an attack there would have been a fleet of ocean-canoe with spirit-warriors, which would be very different from Africans, Indo-Europeans, Asians, etc that Mediterraneans were used to interacting with.

It never existed. You would need trade routes that connects several different civilizations, so that any new invention can travel and improve through the different places and information, trading goods and knowledge can be changed between different cultures. This is the reason why the fertile crescent, Greece and Egypt was the most advanced places in the ancient world. This could not have happened in the middle of the sea. People didn't even had good enough ships to go there at the time.
But lets put it simple. If Atlantis really ecisted, then why didn't Europ had corn before the colonizations of the New World? If Atlantis was really connected to the ancient Greece, then you'd think that they traded stuff with each other.
Also, continents doesn't just disappear. It would take millions of years.
