I dont know any trans people, but I imagine there are three categories.
One wants society to treat them as if they were the other gender, and "being" the other gender looks like the most obvious solutuion. They may not counsciously think this, but it's the underlying reason. However, this is a gender roles problem, not a gender problem. These people need help to realize that they are not the wrong gender, they just dont want to conform to traditional gender stereotypes.
