What's your creative process? What's something you'd try to insert in all your work? And, how do you feel about adaptations? Sorry for fucking up the last thread.
I think of an idea in my head, let it stew a little.
Then I think about the characters, maybe write their names down.
After that I outline, write a treatment, then write a first draft.
On my first draft there's usually a bunch of things I've added off the top of my head that weren't in the outline or treatment, so then I'll add them to the outline and treatment.
Make my draft as good as it can be.
Show it to peers.
And that's my last step so far. I have no idea how to do a shooting script or how to work a camera yet. For now I just want to have coherent stories with decent scripts.
Bentley Gonzalez
I meant more like, how do you polish your ideas?
Liam Reed
Polish them as in, turn them from ideas, to fleshed out stories?
Lots of daydreaming pretty much. I'll also watch movies with similar plots and adapt things.
Juan Allen
>Lots of daydreaming pretty much. I'll also watch movies with similar plots and adapt things. That's what I do, but it still doesn't help. I'm still not sure how to execute.
Charles Smith
Try starting with a logline, then making a rough outline, and then a treatment. It's best to map out your story before you start it.
Carson Taylor
I've done all of that and I'm still at a loss, maybe it's the characters.
Nicholas Morgan
Tell me a little about your idea, if you don't mind.
Feel free to be vague if you're worried about it being stolen.
Jace Bailey
holy fuck i just farted it smells so fucking bad
Owen Phillips
Birdbrains guy here, just back from a night of drinking. I started the synopsis of my feature film and I'm gonna start the logline tomorrow. Hopefully I'll have the whole thing written before christmas and then I can start filming early 2017.
Here's my short film from last year and I'll take any questions so long as Im awake.
It takes place in a future where the police kill people instead of putting them in prisons, no matter how small the crime. Most of the police officers are white supremacist that use the new system as a front to kill black and brown people. At the same time, there's this girl who's a gang member that gets taken by the US government. They experiment on her and she ends up having telekinetic powers.
Jack Powell
What's your feature about? And what camera do you use?
Juan Allen
>tfw 25yo >tfw last couple of years have been a blur of making a couple of shitty shorts that hopefully will never see a light of the day, procrastination, fapping to traps, watching films and reading, shitposting, ballooning up to 300lbs and then slimming back down to 182lbs, watching my doge die from cancer, goofing around with friends and stuff like that >tfw the only thing i have accomplished so far is getting one of my comedy sketches shown at a film festival and a couple of other public events (people liked it very much) >tfw people my age have already graduated film school and are working in the industry >tfw they have like 1500 friends on facebook, all working in the industry in some capacity - i know one guy who runs an arthouse theater, that's it >tfw orson welles made citizen kane at 25
Starting to panic here a bit guys. I know this is all my doing, btw. I was young so I thought "fuck film school, my favorite directors didn't go either". I also should have written and shot way more stuff at this point. At least I have savings with no debt, thank God.
Fuck it. I'm going to find as much money as I can and shoot my first feature next year. I'm aiming for 50-100k range. Wish me luck.
Eli Harris
I think the cops killing indiscriminatly is enough without making it an obvious political parallel to what's happening in the US
Leo Phillips
I was with you until telekinetic powers Why does every sci-fi writer that isn't writing about space travel (and even a lot that do) obsessed with shoving in magical powers in the future? Asimov died too early
Angel Gray
Your favorite directers didn't go because they already had industry connections.
What they never explain when I was in HS was that you went to university to meet business contacts, not to learn anything. If I had known that going in I would have been much better off.
Josiah Lee
A guy who dies and always resurrects in a cottage in rural Ireland. A satanic cult discover him and won't leave him alone.
I used a Sony EX-1 for my short film, I may rent something different for my film.
Luis Murphy
>Fuck it. I'm going to find as much money as I can and shoot my first feature next year. I'm aiming for 50-100k range. Wish me luck.
[Shia Lebouf Do It.jpg]
Luis Hernandez
I was scared you're me in 2 year's time But then I relax because I've been on a professional film set, know people that can hopefully help me and I don't make comedies or fap to traps
Connor Rodriguez
I'm not really sure what you're trying to say, I should just make it regular police brutality?
Magical? It's more like Akira/The Winter Soldier.
James Kelly
>A guy who dies and always resurrects in a cottage in rural Ireland. A satanic cult discover him and won't leave him alone. That has to be a comedy, it's a comedy, right? It actually sounds really intriguing. >rent How much did renting the Sony EX-1 cost?
Adam Kelly
I'm going to shoot something small in Hungary and I need to hire a cinematographer so I just googled "hungary DP reel".
Don't know what I expected.
Sebastian Watson
Extraordinary powers take the grit and realism away. This is just my personal pet peeve though. If it's good, it's good. But personally I feel like I won't like it but I loved Elfen Lied and Akira so maybe I'm just being cynical
Asher Russell
If you're looking for a crew try asking reddit. I'm not joking.
John Moore
It's definitely a comedy, the satanic cult will have a keg party and everything.
I loaned the EX 1 from my college. I should have made this film back then but I'll make due and rent out a cottage and film then.
Asher Thompson
Do you live in Ireland then? I'm at uni in Belfast (not for film)
Joshua Moore
Have you seen Beyond The Black Rainbow? Female protag reminded me of it from your outline, apart from the political commentary of course.
Jace Bennett
I don't think I'm going for grit and realism. I'm somewhere between 80's action movie and political thriller. The main story, which I neglected to mention, follows the telekinetic girl and one of the police officers (who was also a gang member), they become outlaws together. I'm just not really sure what the story goal should be, ideally it's exposing racism, but racism has been exposed several times in real life with little to no change.
Should I watch Elfen Lied?
Tyler Harris
Yeah, in Wicklow mane.
Whatcha studying?
Gavin Bell
You know, if you toned this down it could be a really good black comedy. Not necessarily an improvement, but certainly more of a challenge with an increased likelihood of being taken seriously.
Part of the problem with comedies is when they aren't made professionally it does just look like you were messing with your mates.
The idea sounds fun, btw. I like it as a premise.
Robert Harris
Where do you get your money from?
Thomas Roberts
> Wicklow
You coming up lad?
Luis Adams
Thanks man, I'll do my best to keep it in the realm of semi-serious. I want to have a scene that depicts what happens when he dies inside the cabin, it'll be the one scene I'll go all out on if I can. One other rule is that he deteriorates within 24 hours of leaving the cottage so he is pretty much bound to it in one form or another.
Gabriel Hall
Any advice for someone writing their first script?
Jaxon Moore
>Have you seen Beyond The Black Rainbow? I kept avoiding it because I thought it looked kind of ugly, my female protagonist is my biggest issue with the movie, I have no idea how to portray her. I'm black, but I haven't really been around the type of black people that would be in gangs (or maybe I have and just didn't know). I'm basing my male protagonist off of Shotaro Kaneda and Yusuke Urameshi.
Jeremiah Harris
philosophy... yeah Nah, I enjoy it
Robert Robinson
Yeah, me too. Oh well, I reap what I sow.
Thank you.
Benjamin Johnson
Im a security guard and I work indie film jobs for peanuts. In college I had access to free equipment and crew, I only regret not making a feature back then.
Zachary Martin
>Lighthouse
I had my short film screened there last year! I might be around, I'll let you know in a later general.
Carter Hall
Fair enough, it could be kinda cool. In my head I' sorta picturing Midnight Special with a John Carpenter theme if that makes sense?
>Should I watch Elfen Lied? I really enjoyed it. It's about some ultra violent teenage girls who are biological weapons that rip each other limb from limb. Also they get naked a lot in a non sexual way The opening credits are GOAT too youtube.com/watch?v=sQTfzA3POSo
If that sounds like your sort of thing, I'd recommend it
Grayson Morales
I don't know much about the subject but as long as you enjoy it, that's pretty cool!
Evan Anderson
Where in Wicklow are you doing it? Based in Dublin myself.
Oliver Hughes
None of you dopey cunts have a fucking clue what you're doing. You're all writing derivative horse shit, imitating movies you've seen or trying to impress people. That will get you nowhere. Why? Because you're writing a cliche, an imitation of an imitation. The goal of film is to capture life. Do you understand? Write what you know, what you've experienced, what you can imagine or dream of. Honestly, have any of you even read any of Tarkovsky's writings? God damn plebs. Even Spielberg said, "the more personal a film is to you, the better it will be". STOP the fucking god damn crime movies and edgy killer movies you UTTER, UTTER morons. Jesus Christ.
Justin Parker
I didn't see Midnight Special, but a John Carpenter vibe most definitely. Escape From New York, Do The Right Thing, Akira, and West Side Story. And the male protagonist will be like Jack Burton from Big Trouble in Little China, but a killer and former gang member. >If that sounds like your sort of thing, I'd recommend it I don't care much for extreme violence, but it sounds like it might be a bit helpful. And you have good taste in opening music.
Ayden Baker
Well I live in North Wicklow but I'll shoot it wherever I find a cheap place to rent for a couple of weeks. I'll post a recruitment email account when Im ready to film so I might have something for /my guys/ to do for the film.
Hunter Price
Is this pasta?
Please post your work.
I don't even totally disagree with the post, but it reads like it was written by an I'm sixteen and my taste is fucking superior faggot
Sebastian Reed
Whats the application process like? Do you know how often they screen shorts from nobodies?
Worked on this some today. Extremely low-budget horror film.
I've been getting out pages on a couple of other projects, too. But I think it's time to double-down and focus on the one. It's just practice, but if it turns out anywhere half decent and a indie producer shows interest, I'll probably part with it for nothing more than writing credit.
Ian Martin
Oh it was just a small screening organised by a couple of lads. OIC media, I sent them a link of my film and they chose to screen it, a lot of these shorts are literally just community college pads sharing their work. I didn't stick around after the screening but I imagine it was just people looking to snag a free crew for their next project.
Asher Nguyen
>trying to impress people
This is one of my weaknesses. I spent so many years fighting so hard against my natural sensibility and inclination towards comedy, just because "I need to make serious films so people will take me seriously so abortions and suicide it is". Now I've accepted that yeah, I make funny stuff, but I still try to impress people. Especially the thought of my first feature not being like dynamite in the eyes of "them" is killing me.
I'm trying to get rid of those voices really hard.
Thomas Thompson
Fair enough, cheers. How much did you benefit from the experience in total, I don't post anything I written here, and I've yet to begin filming a short myself. Anything important you think I should know before I take the step into casting actors and picking up the camera to shoot?
Jacob Bennett
Honestly? Just know if you like your own idea and it is the kind of film you personally want to see be made, making movies to please others will result in a convoluted mess and a struggle of control over your own project. As far as casting goes, look to Facebook groups for actors and you'll find the people you're looking for.
Zachary Kelly
>I'm going to find as much money as I can and shoot my first feature next year.
Same. Saving up about 1-1.5k a month, so I'll probably only make it into the 12k-ish range, but I'm also 20 and just aiming at making a decent first project.
Jaxon Wood
What job do you have? Most people your age trying to make films are either neets or students.
Robert Murphy
>Making a 50k movie
Why not a no-budget movie? I know a couple of lads who made cheap, feature films for next to nothing
I am technically a student, was taking general studies in math/sciences but I've decided to not sign up for any classes this semester to save up the money (I refuse to take out student loans).
So with that I just picked up a job as a produce clerk at a local supermarket. I move vegetables and fruits all day, and it's honestly not bad. Only expenses are $300 rent and $40 phone, so it's easy to save.
Aaron Johnson
Because I don't want the film to sound and look like shit.
Brandon Green
And you'll manage to save 1-1.5k a month? Sorry, I'm young and retarded. I've only ever worked part time. What sort of a wage are you on?
Charles Rivera
You don't need 50k for that, maybe 5k at the most. A lot of it is skill in the end m8.
Easton Bell
$10.45, 30-40 hours a week and whatever shifts I can get called in for.
I actually made more as a fast food worker, where I was offered a supervisor position, but the customers destroy your soul. But as long as you work hard and aren't a total idiot, the raises come and money is easy to get.
Easton Foster
:D
Ayden Cruz
Good luck, guy. If you make it, you'll always be remembered here for Birdbrains.
Chase Nguyen
>Why not a no-budget movie? Because it's hell. And that trailer doesn't make a good case for it.
Right on!
Only go nano/no-budget when you have a large network of friends eager to help. I really lucked out on my current project, even just having people who know their shit, like someone to advise on colour palettes and costume makes a HuuuUUUUge difference.
The truth is the difficult part is the equipment, people will be willing to donate their time and resources to a film, but it's the equipment that's difficult.
Even if you have access to some top-tier equipment that you don't own, I'd still invest like 2k in having a backup shooting rig, just in case you need to do re-shoots, doesn't have to be anything super nice. You just need the security and flexibility to keep shooting should anything happen to your borrowed equipment or your production.
Jayden King
Do I have to live in Los Angeles?
Bentley Harris
Yes, New York is dead.
Dominic Hill
Would help if you could tell us what part of the industry you want to get into first.
Austin Diaz
Writing and directing.
Henry Rivera
An user told me a while back that I should write down a plan or outline of my episode script before writing the actual script since I was done with the first act and stuck on what I'd do in the second act.
I actually did the synopsis of Act Two today and am a lot more confident.
Thanks anons.
Elijah Parker
Which one of those appeals to you more? Also... >TV or film? >Which genre? >Any career prospects where you are now?
Kayden Torres
I started out with wanting to be just a writer, but I definitely appreciate the amount of creative control a director has.
>TV or film? Larger emphasis on film, but definitely want to get into making web series.
>Which genre? Primarily Fantasy/Sci-Fi, but not limited to.
>Any career prospects where you are now? I live in Cincinnati, which for the most part is probably more comparable to being to a filmmaker what the Sahara is to an ice sculptor compared to L.A. But we've had a few larger-scale productions here in recent times like Ides of March, Carol and Marauders, so I'm not entirely sure.
Tyler Perry
Nail down what you want to do more, although then again getting into the industry is realizing you'll have to do all sorts of gigs to get started.
While you're still there you're best bet is to shadow someone in the industry, ideally you want to be a PA or runner but helping a Gaffer or a Grip will at least get you on the set, and give you the opportunity to switch to being a runner.
For directing, you'll have to go to LA eventually, yes. Writing, depends if you can elicit interest
This seems relevant to you: johnaugust.com/2011/no-hollywood-for-him
Dylan Hall
What's up /swfmg/? Here's a question for you.
How do you guys keep yourselves motivated?
I went to film school and have been living in LA and working "in the industry" since I graduated. I landed in post but writing is what I ultimately want to do.
I've written numerous scripts in the past three years I've lived here, both solo and with multiple other co writers. I've networked with producers and had more than one project put into the hands of legitimate Hollywood execs.
I know that breaking into this shit takes time, but even after everything I've been able to do so far I still feel millions of miles away from "making it," whatever the fuck that means.
I'm finding it really hard to stay motivated in my writing, knowing full well that it's all most likely a complete waste of time and that I'll almost certainly never be given the opportunity to do the work I actually want to do. It's making me really apathetic and and lazy with my work. Most days it's like pulling teeth to get ten fucking shitty ass pages out of me.
How do you guys deal with these negative thoughts and push through? How do you go on with your writing knowing that ultimately it will all likely amount to 96 pages of paper that gather dust in your drawer? It's getting really fucking hard for me to keep going with this shit, desu.
Josiah Sullivan
Yes
Joshua Garcia
I don't have an answer because I struggle with the same thing myself. I hate the feeling that im just treading water.
FWIW you've worked towards your goal a lot (even if you arent doing exactly what you want to be doing in the industry) you're still there.
I try to enjoy the process for myself and just enjoy that I have spent my time creating something rather than mindlessly wasting my time on video games and TV.
Joseph Adams
I just remember how much capeshit there is and then I realize that not only do I have a moral responsibility to keep trying and not give up.
I remember that even if I suck, I can't be much worse than the average Hollywood hack. But I think I don't suck, I mean obviously, otherwise why bother... so I just keep my head down, think pragmatically about building a profile.
I've only been out of filmschool for 1.5 years now, and I've been told it takes 5 to get regular employment, and even then you're still only grazing your fingertips towards your dream.
You have to think you're worthy of it. You have to think you deserve it.
>If I wanted to get anywhere, I'd have to spit my way through youtu.be/Uv5KPY5ep00?t=2m26s
Sorry for the Tony Robbins tear airy fairy bullshit, but without knowing your particular circumstance it's the best I can do.
Tyler Allen
>I just remember how much capeshit there is and then I realize that not only do I have a moral responsibility to keep trying and not give up.
kek.
I'm not that guy, but Im glad to see someone else sharing a similar mindset to me, but I write for TV.
I'm so unhappy with the state of television and the amount of shit that seems to run for 10+ seasons, reality shit, "talent" contests - but I didnt want to be the guy who just sat there complaining about it and saying "I could do better than that" without doing anything.
Julian Clark
>but I didnt want to be the guy who just sat there complaining about it and saying "I could do better than that" without doing anything. Exactly this.
Like I said, the bar for "quality" is low. That gives me hope
I mean sure the networking and brownnosing is gonna be hell, but how hard can it actually be to output something even an iota better than "Real Housewives of Faceliftistan" or The Big Bazoonga Theory.
Gabriel Torres
Idiot, go to Northern Europe
> Los Angeles
Henry Nelson
I also remember that everything is cyclical in life. I consider that we are in a "dark age" of television. Quality stuff is being produced its just getting lost amongst the tripe, eventually it will come around, and I hope to be prepared.
networking and brown nosing is a part of any industry and there will always be people in positions they don't deserve, but we have to put up the good fight regardless.
Jordan Watson
what motivates you both to uncover hidden gems in film? Tell me

>blackface

My tastes are incredibly mainstream and I write comedy, so I tend to just watch the stuff associated with people I like and branch off from there.
When i find something i really like, or that I want to take inspiration from I watch it over and over.
Dylan Fisher
Hidden gems?
Gavin Anderson
I got this idea for a horror screenplay after reading a spoopy skinwalker greentext a while ago. Anyone else come across a Sup Forums story and think about whether or not it would make a good film?
I remember another one about some user that got kicked out of his home and pretty much lived as a drifting hobo for like 5 years. It was a really interesting read because of the people he met along the way, the near death encounters he had, and when he finally came back home and his parents regretted what they did. I thought it could make an interesting movie. I'll have to track down that story sometime for another reading.
Jonathan White
>88/29 You lost me and apparently several others. The ratios on /swg/ used to be a LOT better. I've checked the archives. You've ruined this franchise.
Jacob Davis
I'm proud.
Gabriel Collins
The content isn't any better. It's 99% /swg/. """/fmg/""" has been tacked on even though nobody who regularly participates knows anything about how to use cameras. It's an embarrassment.
Jonathan Diaz
bummp
Ryder Allen
Was it the last thread where all of the participants were revealed to be niggers? That was fucking hilarious
Eli Ross
Stay mad, kid.
Ryder Parker
Any tips about filming authentic seeming scenes? I wrote a piece about life in the hood and keep trying to film it but NIGGERS keep stealing my cameras. How do I stop this /fmg/?
Angel Gray
yeah fine just let these threads die I declare Film Production Generals over
Elijah Johnson
Sony A77 into Blackmagic SSD drive here. Have shot on XDCAM in a previous life, giant discs and all. All my film school shorts were mastered on to HDCAM which is insane, but there you go.
Loved the use of Kowa Cine Prominar on Submarine, closest you can get to Super Baltar, which I think were really underused on Rush, ughhh those C300 shots were terrible you could see the digital grain. Way too anachronistic.
AMA.
