There is some justification for squatter rights.

Say you find an untouched plot of land that looks good for whatever purposes you need it for. You look for an owner, can't find one and begin paying property taxes to the city, and begin building up the land to suit your purposes. The next ten years no-one says shit, no-one claims the land, etc.

Suddenly, on the eleventh year, some guy come around with the legitimate/legal title to the land you've been using. Everything you've done is forfeit and he kicks you off the land.

That's the idea behind squatter rights. It's better that someone who is contributing to the city and the land be able to take possession of the land than have it sitting unused.

Certainly it's too lenient and easily abused in some places, but where the laws are fair and make sense, squatters rights are a logical concept. It's rooted in common law concepts that property is owned by those who work the land.

It's also interesting to note that less than 40% of people actually one their own home. I doubt there are many people who actually have access to their title deed, and in the case for everybody with a mortgage they are only 2 or 3 missed payments away from the bank owning their house.

So the concept of land ownership is pretty distorted these days, even if you do have the title deed and are debt free the UK only allows for 99 year lease holds in the best case. So even then you never actually own any property
