It's a manga that's been running for 20+ years now, and it's pretty incredible. One of the things that's most interesting about it, is that the author has basically reinvented himself in his style several times throughout the series, while still keeping it true to its roots. During the first 10 volumes (referred to collectively as the "Golden Age" arc), it's basically gritty 80s style manga of purely dark medieval warfare, becoming borderlined historical fiction. but in volumes 11-12+ literally hell opens up and pours itself onto earth evil dead style but in a completely serious manner. Over the next ~5 volumes you have every bit of bad in his world corrupted and risen to full blown demonic rape-fests; corrupt priests burning everyone at the stake, packs of roving goblins kidnapping women, raping and impregnating them to make more monsters, an evil god-emporer who tries to take over the world etc. It then turns into a traditional swords/sorcery fantasy where Guts assembles a team of rag-tag heroes to destroy the five God Hands of hell, one of whom was his best friend and rival during the Golden Age.

God I hate the anime so fucking much, I mean how do they Fuck it up so much. I really want to be able to watch it, but I know that even if they hade the best team on it, it would never compare to the beauty of the art in the manga. I always have such a hard time staying focus and consistent with reading it.

I still enjoy it, because it follows the story pretty well, I just lament the fact it had no budget

I've read it a few times, pretty interesting to see how different Guts is. I think Miura got him right for the serious.

The new anime or the old one?
I thought the old one did a really good job at capturing the atmosphere of Berserk.
The new anime suffers heavily from the animation, it's a disgrace.
Apart from that, though, it's not that bad.
Berserk 2016 was kind of a mess with pacing.
Berserk 2017 was actually pretty good if you ask me. Schierke's voice actor was on point.

I liked the old one, it makes me feel nostalgic.
I watched the movies and then went back and watched the old anime and holy Fuck do they get the atmosphere better then the movies.
But yeah I could not stand 2016 and I've actually not seen 2017 yet...I've been pushing it off.

Fully agreed on the old one, it was pretty amazing.
I didn't like the movies that much for the same reason, it was just off.
I felt that 2017 was much better than 2016.
I acknowledged that the animation was awful, but got past it in the first season and I felt like I enjoyed 2017 a lot more because of that.
Also 2017 had a more consistent plot progression.
