He tries to frame the entire conflict as a war of two cultures, along the lines of, "They hate and attack us because of our form of government and stated values", failing to see that there are other countries in the world with similar values, like Japan, that do not have a conflict with them.
This probably isn't intentional, since he's always been against all religion, but it's a very useful narrative to paint that helps the powers that be.
