Get this... Trump is the only one with the tape, he leaks. They then (unjustified) go after him (before they knew that he lied) about the tape (a non-issue) from 25 years ago. This, therefor allows Trump to say. "if we're gonna go back on old tapes, what about the tape of Hillary Clinton bragging & laughing about getting off a child rapist".
This results in Trump being able to justify and bring up, forcing CNN to investigate and openly admit to the existence of the Hillary Clinton child rape tape.

Honestly OP, I am really curious how he talks his way out of this one. If he really did release the tape, it was a bold move to blatantly lie about it on the Today Show. Unless he admits to it, this is actual tangible evidence of him blatantly lying. Everyone can listen to tape, and everyone can tell it's clearly him.
He was able to evade the other attacks because it was hearsay and muh feelings bullshit, but he flat out said:

If he strings it along he can use interest in his tax returns as leverage "ok Hillary, I'll provide my tax returns if you provide those speech transcripts". He reframes the discussion and puts the opposition on the defensive. He's constantly said he will be releasing the tax returns (assuming he's not lying) its a matter of when not if.
