stupid question time, but is there a way to have a 16-step drum sequencer in Ableton?
Benjamin Allen
Don't even bother with it unless it's necessary and you already have an idea in your mind that you can tweak it to match. This applies to any kind of EQing anywhere; I used to aimlessly slap an EQ on practically anything just for the sake of it without having any concrete need or strategy for it and my tracks would always sound like shit at the end of the day.
The phrase "less is more" is something you should always keep in mind. Don't overdo it on the production minimalism, but also know when to stop adding/modifying things.
Bentley Cook
Does patrician trap exist? Or is it just the bottom of the barrel, copycat, hype genre. I wanna make trap music, but good. The closest thing I've heard to the sound I want is from Travis Scott. That 90210 shit.
Chase Morgan
its hard to set frequency ranges for instruments and get a really good and full mix sound clyp.it/1y1tjlv4

Break out the EQ when you're mixing and different sounds can't be clearly distinguished, or when one part always seems to be too loud or not loud enough no matter how low or high it is in the mix.
>The phrase "less is more" is something you should always keep in mind. People fixate on this far too much.
I have never torrented before. Can someone explain to me how to torrent Fl Studio? Waiting for either the shit responses or good advice.
Justin Richardson
Lmao how old can u be
Austin Gray
we can count that he learned to read and write so thats kinda old already
Jordan Reyes
i see theres some experienced producers here. can anyone give tips on equalizing multiple instruments in a mix, defining a frequency range for each one etc, and comment on what i'm doing. im finding it hard to get a clean yet full and even sound around the whole spectrum.
Idk bigups on learning how to torrent but why feel the need to post about it lmao
Austin Scott
are you using reference tracks or nah
Parker Harris
yes
Nolan Foster
well i'm not in front of a pair of monitors to critically judge anything you just posted but i remember your songs lol. I don't recall any specific problems aside from something about your solo that you ended up fixing but i'll share a semi obvious tip/reminder that i found helpful- if you're not already, don't be afraid to make crazy 10 or 15 db cuts on your guitars in that fizzy 4k range. That should go without saying but I just recently recalled that one because i'm working more with guitars lately. it helps.
i'll give you a listen tomorrow afternoon if i remember
Charles Ortiz
Two little sketches I was working on this evening that will end up in my under 2 minute junk drawer of stuff I have no interest in finishing. Only sharing because I like these threads but never contribute. Don't bully.
can someone recommend some videos or books on how to be financially okay in the music industry? mainly as a mix engineer but i understand that you pretty much have to be a jack of all trades for a long time as well.
how are people selling tracks/beats/songs nowadays? what are contract songs and exclusive rights songs?
whats the easiest way to build clientele?
ghost producing?
do i just go offer to mix to the dude selling his mixtape out of his trunk at the 7/11 and hope his homeboys start paying me to mix for them? are rappers really as shitty to work with as ive heard?
who here has been in the biz that can help me out
Jason Thompson
I accidentally dragged and dropped and movie's entire audio file into Ableton's sampler. Now Ableton isn't responding fuuuuuuuck
>finish new mix >hit 'save live set as' >ableton crashes >would you like to recover your work? >yes of course >reopens project with all the new faders positions saved but none of the eq and reverb settings
Ian Scott
>not pressing ctrl s every 10 seconds when will they lern
Elijah Watson
'save' is fine 'save as' was a bridge too far
Aiden Butler
you will "save as" later but that doesnt prevent you from saving
Ryder Barnes
didn't want to save over the previous mix
Owen Jackson
>hm i think i will make a different mix and save it separatedly >saves as a new file >keeps saving again
Asher Cooper
that's all well and good in hindsight but sometimes it just starts off as messing around with parameters and then 5 mins later it's worthy of being a separate mix and then it's too late
Lincoln Scott
Is it normal to burn out of your own tracks as your work on them? I've been getting more into this lately and just spent a ton of time on one track and am lukewarm on the end result but I feel like it's better than I think.
i've been working on this trap beat and i came out with this bassline... with the little knowledge of music theory that i have the notes doesnt makes sense (they're not part of the chord) but it doesnt like its clashing...
The bass is fine but that bell sounds like it has a osc thats hella off
Jackson Lopez
what do you mean off? Off tune? or doesnt fit the general "vibe"? thx anyway user
Angel Davis
actually the bass sounds like its slightly off
Noah Edwards
I dont think it sounds right in the context of the track. Maybe tune that one osc or change samples
Aiden Jackson
thx, yeah i kinda feel the same about that synth, now im definitely changing it
and with the bass i think like you, maybe is just one note that is fucking up the feel thx for your time user im gonna keep messing around with it until its right (if you could re-listen to the loop and tell me where do you think its that off tune note i would really appreciate it)
Jaxon Phillips
Not going to spoon feed you broski. Gotta train your ears

Trying to make something super 80s but not old sounding. Dunno if there's a way to do my mix better? Ignore the vocal take, had to record sitting in a chair while my roommates were sleeping.
I have (actually had) a band, somewhat crust/metallic hxc, and we're considering self-recording our EP as a farewell. We don't really want the 'shitty punx' sound to it, but somethin like this kind of sound: youtube.com/watch?v=-stKJyl-IH8 youtube.com/watch?v=WeAvPgdPVc0
We're gonna use 5 mic recording for the drums and mic-to-amp recording for the guitars and bass. Pretty basic, I know, I guess we'll be recording with Pro-Tools.
Any set up or tips for recording/production? I know this is a broad question but i just want to know if we're on the right track about this
Nathaniel Butler
Anyone doing algorithmic/generative composition? Currently learning Max for Live. It's quite fun, but so far its just shitty autechre beats
Nolan Robinson
so im tryin somethin new meanin im gonna do the whole track in front of people from start to finish, i got intro and basic beat into drop build done atm but its not finished
you wanna drop feed on the dubstep wannabe shit thatd be neat
I'm trying to put together an EP (for my personal pleasure) and I was wondering how you keep everything coherent sound-wise. What are some general basic rules?
Pic unrelated.

Matthew Stewart
no dont do that shit nobody fucking cares when u go original you suck originally and your robot ass original cucktard wannabe anus can drag yourself back to r9k
Bump for answers, comments or tips Much appreciated
Isaac Smith
Yeah, that would solve the problem.
The thing is that I started using ableton last year and I made the songs at different moods and level of mastery over a long period of time.
So, for example, is using different kinds of reverb to be avoided? How do you do to keep the tracks uniform? (it can't be good if one is quiet, the other super loud, etc.)
Andrew Cruz
Anyone else like remixing shit into mono? It really helps with leaening how frequencies and volumes of different sounds can blend together.
Started this one about an hour ago. I normally make either beats and stuff for friends or guitar based music so wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone a bit
John Brooks
I started using MAX/MSP
is it just me or this is way complicated
Nolan Taylor
y'all gonna critique my shit or what? I need a second opinion
Adrian Stewart
Not that user, but I'd imagine what are you trying to do could be managed better on a sampler using 1 midi track with a different sound/effect-chain on each note.
William Lopez
i feel as if this is missing something, or needs more adjusting somehow, but i'm not sure what i'd do to it.
Im trying to learn myself, it is quite complicated. I started trying to build a synth, which was way over my head. My recommendation is to start with the Max parts, and do some midi stuff like sequencing. But maybe that is what you're already doing.
Michael Butler
I hate hi hats
they make everything sound cheap

slate digital. wanna know something? slate digital a shit! everything it does is boost some frequencies and add volume to delude you. the description to every gear in the rack is a salad of buzzwords like "muh vintage present warm tone"
at the same time i learned to mix with it and got used to crankin these saturations to get my mix sound alive and meaty with it

slate digital memey analog plugins. wanna know something? slate digital a shit! everything it does is boost some frequencies and add volume to delude you. the description to every gear in the rack is a salad of buzzwords like "muh vintage present warm tone"
at the same time i learned to mix with it and got used to crankin these saturations to get my mix sound alive and meaty with it and cant make a good mix with regular clean digital eqs and compressors

clyp.it/2vbm1grj liquid dnb wip kinda inspired by futuristic secret underwater laboratory levels in video games like metroid fusion
I'm not sure where I'm gonna go with it but I like it so far I think the arpeggiated synth that comes in towards the end is a bit too generic rave-y for the song
Hey my dudes, I started playing around with to studio like a month ago and here's something I threw together. It was my first time playing around with samples and I think ive improved alot since this track, but id still love feedback and thoughts. I made it to be a rap instrumental, but i dont really know if it would work as one. Thanks (:
