This is great: the recounted history is, well, disturbing as expected (and then some) and technically I've rarely seen a documentary this good. You can see bits of Herzog (obviously), hints of Russell's immersive etnography, Vertov's mockery of the screen as a separation between film and public - maybe even Parajanov's talent for artistic tableaus.
Yeah true. I was just put off by it being described as "looking at the victims's suffering", which always risks being a forcedly sentimental tour de force, but after seeing the first one I'm definitely watching it.
Pretty sure that's everyone's reaction. Coming from the unconscious, I'd wager
Jack Collins
Well, that's pretty prejudiced. Not a good thing if you are interested in exploring films and documents, is it now. Every film deserves a fair chance imho
Jace Perry

>I put these things into my films until they take me out in a straight jacket kek
Sebastian Carter
Yeah of course, you're right - have just had a few annoying experiences with that kind of forced feelings bullshit (namely, a "look at these poor people" photoset in the Venice Biennale with sappy Hiruma-tier music playing obsessively in the background) that the thought of it just irks me to no end.
There are a lot of documentaries doing pathos right of course (Tarnation, Titicut Follies, Dark Days) but they're rarer.
Dominic Walker
The clip from Look of Silence is some hard stuff.
What are your favorite docs? I am guilty of not watching them more.
Loved Night & Fog, Thin Blue Line and lessons of darkness myself.
Hudson Reed
Oh and Sans Soleil, if that is a document.
Colton Gonzalez
>[Happiness], it is just awful. -Werner Herzog.
Jacob Roberts
Haven't seen as many as I'd like honestly, so my list will be faulty, but a few I think are essential:
Tarnation, Ben Russell's stuff (you can find it on Vimeo, start with "Let Us Persevere In What We Resolved Before We Forget"), Man With A Movie Camera, Benning's Natural History, Behemoth (the 2015 one by Zhao Liang), Dark Days, Bells From the Deep.
Yet to see Sans Soleil actually, been meaning to do so for a while now.
Daniel Ramirez
Did you get the Benning film from KG or was it streamed somewhere? Behemoth looks interesting, thanks.
Have you seen any of Geyrhalter? I've seen Pripyat and Homo Sapiens and quite liked both of them
Jonathan Wood
A friend of mine bought the German DVD, I've yet to manage to get on KG. One can only hope.
If you're interested, I can give you a link to film by Sylvain George - qu'ils reposent en revolt (des figures de guerre).
Didn't know Geyrhalter's name but I've seen bits of Our Daily Bread. Which of his film would you say is better to watch?
Dylan Jones
Oh, I haven't seen ODB. I should probably grab it right now from RT. I've only seen the two I mentioned and they're both quite different so it's hard to really say what's the better watch - too much of an apples to oranges comparison.
Sure give a link to it the film.
Do you use mubi?
Jackson Brown
I'm not scared by Herzog, but I am disgusted by his shilling and general mendacity.
Hope it works, original one kept setting off spam alerts
Guess I'll watch Homo Sapiens maybe, provided I can find it. I should use mubi, but I don't for now. Too lazy to start. Found a few good lists on there though
Jaxson Butler
Thanks. Yeah mubi has very nice lists and I like the stream service part as it is one of the few ways I can grab arthouse films. Notebook has some nice links from time to time.
I could try uploading HS to mega for you. It'll just take a while as my upload is shit.
Robert Brooks
It'd be much appreciated if you could, I looked around and couldn't find much. Can repay with Meditations on Revolution if you're interested, as far as I know it's hard to find.
You feel like 5.99 monthly it's worth it for mubi? I'm considering subscribing myself
Caleb Carter
It's only worth it if you watch them. One of the few ways, like I said, for me to grab arthouse films and usually the non-arthouse stuff is interesting at least.
Lets hope my phone doesn't fuck up the connection.
Josiah Moore
Thanks mate, again, much appreciated. I'll keep bumping the thread, but in case the mail is
Can't actually post a screenshot but I'm upping something too because I don't like being an ungrateful shit.
James Young
If you make a mubi account hit up a link. It's fine even without the subscription just as a log and finding lists (I find).
I hope this works, if it doesn't I try again.
Levi Clark
*braaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap*
Mason White
I've actually went ahead and got started on the 30 days trial after this conversation, plenty of great movies on there - but for some godforsaken reason I had my account linked to facebook and I've got to figure out how to remove the connection
Dylan Martinez
Literally the most overrated documentary that has ever existed
William Mitchell
Anyway, here's Meditation on Revolutions for whomever may be interested. Pretty cool series of movies, recommended to those who like Benning or Marker.
Thanks pham. And great thread, everyone. I'm impressed b the level of discussion in here.
Blake Richardson
pls post it on ghost
Juan Foster
You're welcome. I'd like to see more threads like this but as always, you reap what you sow and the land of Sup Forums is pregnant with filth and malice and lolsorandom edginess, so discussion is somewhat of a rare fruit.
film about post-human world, very good photography and easily one of the most wonderful sound designs I've heard in ages.
i'd love if someone has Chris Marker's work other than Sans Soleil.
Aiden Wright
hey link that mubi account
Anthony Morgan
Thanks again mate, this is awesome. Don't know if it's exactly what you're looking for, but try searching for Marker's short movies on YouTube, especially his first ones, you ought to find them. Alternatively, you can find Le Fond Du L'Ai Est Rouge (A Grin Without A Cat) on torrentking.
here you go, ain't nothing on it as for now though
Mason Hall
i'll follow you later if you use it, wont do much good following a person that doesn't use it.
yeah I've used that way for a while with rarer stuff, but can't seem to find Level 5 with it
Julian Martinez
This was intense.
Caleb Jenkins

Ethan Bell
Have it sitting in my hard drive, gonna see it soon.
I'll try, it's probably gonna be worthwhile
Gavin Edwards
the sequel is not nearly as compelling or outstanding as this masterpiece.
Jeremiah Butler
Vernon, Florida nothing political, just absurd humans. Very entertaining.
Alexander Cruz
Doesn't make it a bad document does it now. Hard to really live up to Act of Killing, especially if you are a 'sequel' (and not 'just' another film by Opp.)
Justin Rodriguez

Marwencol is similar in that the subject revolves around the surreal ways that people cope with tragedy.
