Was it revenge when thieves had their backs stripped in the old days? No. The father dispensed justice for his daughters suffering, not revenge. Revenge would probably result in the rapists death.

Sword wounds were much easier to treat than gun wounds. Most sword wounds impact the flesh while gun wounds often pierce an organ. The former will heal while the latter tends to mean death.
Also when fighting with swords both parties move with the intention of not getting hit while in an American style gun duel they would both stand still allowing a quick aim to deliver a fatal blow with some certainty.
Sure there were duels where some guy with a well forged rapier would kill their opponent in a single blow but ultimately the fatality rates for European style duels was extremely low when compared to American style duels.

When you are fighting on the stairs because some idiot charged at you while flailing his sword around then a simple pierce is going to save the day.
Seriously man did you even think about it? Randomly hacking at someone is a terrible tactic because they are likely to be equipped with armour that doesn't get damaged easily by a blade.
When using a mace then wildly flailing can be an effective strategy but the sword is a finesse weapon even when wielded by people that only vaguely understand how to use them.
