WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN: MARVEL MOVIES

Non-MCU edition.

Spider-Man (2002)

>Chris Columbus, Roland Emmerich, Tony Scott, Jan de Bont, Ang Lee, David Fincher, M. Night Shyamalan and Tim Burton were approached to direct the movie before Sam Raimi was hired.

>David Koepp wrote the first draft of the script, which was later revised by Scott Rosenberg and Alvin Sargent. Koepp's draft was notoriously campier and more melodramatic in line with the comic book movies of the 1990's.

>In Koepp's draft, Peter Parker and Harry Osborn are not friends, and Mary-Jane Watson has a crush on Harry. Peter and Harry eventually move in together so Aunt May can sublet Peter's room to help pay the bills, with the agreement Peter will help Harry with his studies, and Harry is consumed by jealousy when Peter and MJ begin growing closer.

>In this version, Norman Osborn despises Harry and believes OsCorp will be ruined under his administration. He forces Harry to fire OsCorp's head scientist, Dr. Otto Octavius, whose designs OsCorp has stolen, causing an infuriated Octavius to lash out and cause an explosion that both fuses his mechanical arms to his spine and exposes Norman to a serum that turns him into the Green Goblin.

>Norman's goal then becomes to kill Harry to preserve OsCorp's future, and he later begins targeting Peter for stealing MJ from Harry, and MJ from choosing another man over Harry, which Norman views as an affront to the Osborn family. Octavius sees the Green Goblin using his designs and vows revenge against him, becoming Doctor Octopus.

>Koepp's draft culminates with the Green Goblin luring Peter, Harry and MJ into OsCorp Tower in order to kill them. Peter manages to intervene as Spider-Man and save Harry. Doctor Octopus then attacks, forcing the Green Goblin to flee after kidnapping Mary-Jane. He attempts to throw her from the Brooklyn Bridge, but Spider-Man rescues her and knocks the Green Goblin off his glider, causing him to be arrested and swear revenge on Spider-Man. Doctor Octopus also swears revenge on Spider-Man for sparing the Green Goblin's life and Harry does likewise upon seeing Spider-Man him kissing MJ.

>Rosenberg's and Sargent's revisions removed Doctor Octopus and refined the storyline, centering it on Peter's relationship with his surrogate fathers, Uncle Ben and Norman. Only two scenes from their drafts were removed from the movie: Peter rescuing hostages in a subway station, which is referenced in the movie, and Peter protecting Henry Fargas, the wheelchair-bound OsCorp executive, during the Green Goblin's first attack.

>Freddie Prinze Jr. was Sony's top choice to play Peter, but Raimi believed he wasn't right for the role. Scott Speedman, Jay Rodan and James Franco auditioned before Tobey Maguire was cast. Franco was later cast as Harry.

>Kate Hudson was Sony's top choice to play MJ, but declined. Alicia Witt, Mena Suvari, Elisha Cuthbert and Eliza Dushku auditioned before Kirsten Dunst was cast.

>Nicolas Cage, John Malkovich and Robert De Niro were approached for Norman Osborn before Willem Dafoe was cast.

>Hugh Jackman was approached to make a cameo appearance as Wolverine, but scheduling conflicts prevented it from happening.

Spider-Man 2 (2004)

>Al Gough & Miles Millar and Michael Chabon wrote two alternative scripts, which were later combined by Raimi, Koepp and Sargent. Both drafts centered on Peter struggling with his responsabilities as he battles Doctor Octopus. Gough & Millar's draft also included Black Cat as an expert thief who attempts to entice Peter into abandoning his responsabilities and set up the Lizard for a potential sequel.

>In Chabon's draft, Otto Octavius is a handsome young scientist and the creator of the spider that bit Peter, to whom he provides with a microchip that can suppress his abilities. Octavius begins dating MJ, but spirals into insanity adter becoming addicted to the endorphins released into his system whenever he uses his mechanical arms. They're fused to his spine after a fight with Spider-Man, slowly killing him, and he becomes obsessed with using Spider-Man's spinal fluid to cure himself.

>Chabon's draft also features Harry descending into paranoia, believing that Spider-Man is conspiring against him, and placing a $10 million bounty on Spider-Man through the Daily Bugle, turning New York City against him. This, coupled with Octavius' accident and MJ's relationship with him, are what drives Peter to use the microchip to remove his powers, although he later has to slice it out with a butcher knife to become Spider-Man once again and stop Doctor Octopus.

>In the end, Octavius realizes he's become a monster after MJ appeals to his humanity, and commits suicide in a collapsing building, while MJ learns about Peter and they develop a relationship.

>Tobey Maguire injured his back while filming SEABISCUIT and demanded that shooting be delayed to accomodate his recovery, leading to tense negotiations with Sony in which he was nearly fired and replaced by Jake Gyllenhall. Maguire and Sony ultimately reached an agreement.

>Vincent D'Onofrio, Chris Cooper and Robert de Niro were approached for Octavius before Alfred Molina was cast.

Spider-Man 3 (2007)

>Raimi and his brother, Ivan Raimi, wrote the first draft of the script, which was later revised by Sargent.

>In early drafts, Sandman and Vulture are the villains. Sandman is a reluctant criminal who accidentally killed Uncle Ben and uses his newfound powers to steal the money needed for his daughter's treatment, while Vulture is Sandman's former cellmate whom he breaks out of prison to help him defeat Spider-Man. Harry's descent into villainy is explored, but he only becomes the new Green Goblin as a stinger for a potential sequel.

>Sony demanded that Raimi add Venom and Gwen Stacy to the narrative and explore Harry as the New Goblin, forcing Raimi to remove the Vulture and change the movie's storyline from "Peter finds out good people can be criminals" to "Peter grapples with his dark side". The script became so complex that Sargent considered splitting it into two movies, but couldn't find a satisfying breaking point in the story.

>In early drafts, the symbiote would arrive on Earth in a space shuttle piloted by John Jameson, which would malfunction and nearly crash-land on Manhattan before Spider-Man intervenes and manages to divert it into the Hudson River, for which he is awarded the key to the city. The sequence was deemed too extensive and expensive and entirely scrapped.

>In early drafts, Eddie Brock's sociopathic tendencies are evidenced, with Peter learning of his criminal record. Brock would also obsessively stalk Gwen and attempt to force his way into her house, claiming she told him she loved him, before being escorted out by Captain George Stacy.

>In early drafts, Sandman would ambush Spider-Man once again at the construction site, before being interrupted by his wife and daughter. Sandman learns that his daughter's conditional is terminal and there is no longer a cure, and is allowed by Spider-Man and Captain Stacy to escape and spend his daughter's final moments by her side.

>In early drafts, Harry's butler Bernard is revealed to a hallucination projected by Harry's subconscious to justify him betraying his father's memory by helping Peter. The scene was shot, but removed after test-audiences were confused by it.

>In early drafts, the symbiote would be revealed to be feeding off of its hosts life forces, with Peter pulling Brock out of the symbiote only to learn Brock has already been reduced to a charred skeleton. The symbiote would then attempt to possess Peter once again, but Peter manages to destroy it.

>In early drafts, Gwen would've been kidnapped by Venom and Sandman, but scheduling conflicts forced Raimi to replace her with MJ although he didn't want MJ to be the damsel in distress once again.

>Ben Kingsley was approached for the Vulture before the character was cut.

>Elisha Cuthbert and Scarlett Johansson were approached for Gwen Stacy before Bryce Dallas Howard was cast.

The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

>Sony greenlit SPIDER-MAN 4 for June 2011, with Raimi, Maguire, Dunst, Rosemary Harris and J.K. Simmons set to return, and John Malkovich and Anne Hathaway as the Vulture and Felicia Hardy. James Vanderbilt wrote the script, which was later revised by Steve Kloves, Gary Ross and David Lindsay-Abaire, but Raimi was not satisfied with the story and dropped out, leading to the project being scrapped.

>The script featured Peter and MJ as a married couple with a young son, Ben. Peter develops a relationship with Felicia, the adoptive daughter of Adrian Toomes, the new editor-in-chief of the Daily Bugle, who attempts to seize control of New York City's criminal underworld as the Vulture. When Toomes accidentally dies in a fight with Spider-Man, Felicia becomes the Vulturess to enact revenge, but chooses to spare Peter's life upon learning who he is and leaves, while MJ and Ben also depart for Los Angeles, driving Peter to give up being Spider-Man.

>Sony originally planned to complete Raimi's series with SPIDER-MAN 4 and SPIDER-MAN 5 before rebooting the franchise, but decided to move forward with a reboot written by Vanderbilt and later revised by Kloves, Sargent and Paul Feig, and Marc Webb was selected to direct.

>In early drafts, Peter learns that his father, Richard Parker, coded the venom of the genetically engineered spiders he's created to Peter's DNA to prevent it from being weaponized by OsCorp, for which him and his wife, Mary Parker, were assassinated. Although "The Untold Story" was one of the marketing campaign's major selling points, Sony was wary after fan backlash when the concept was leaked online and deleted all scenes referencing the idea for the time being.

>In early drafts, Peter's high school classmates are more prominent. In addition to Gwen Stacy and Flash Thompson, there'd be Sally Avril, a popular student whom Peter is initially attracted to; Missy Kallenback, an introverted nerdy girl who has a crush on Peter; and Ariel Keene, Flash's manipulative girlfriend who attempts to seduce Peter once he becomes more popular after humilliating Flash in a basketball match. All three make brief appearances in the movie.

>In early drafts, there's a subplot about Connors' relationship with his estranged ex-wife and son.

>In early drafts, Uncle Ben would be shot dead after chasing after the robber into a dark alley, mistakenly assuming he's Peter, causing the robber to panic and kill him.

>Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Daniel Radcliffe, Robert Pattinson, Logan Lerman, Anton Yelchin, Alden Ehrenreich, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Zac Efron, Jim Sturgess, Xavier Samuel, Liam Aiken, Drake Bell, Michael Angarano, Dane DeHaan and and Josh Hutcherson, among others, auditioned for the role of Peter before Andrew Garfield was cast.

>Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Mia Wasikowska, Imogen Poots, Teresa Palmer, Brooklyn Decker, Amber Heard, Dianna Agron, Emily Browning, Lily Collins, Emma Roberts, Anna Kendrick, Ophelia Lovibond, Sara Paxton, Georgina Haig, Dominique McElligott, Scout Taylor-Compton auditoned for the role of Gwen before Emma Stone was cast.

>Michael Fassbender was approached to play Connors before Rhys Ifans was cast.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)

>Originally, Peter would find out Norman Osborn murdered his parents and engineered his accident to use his blood as a cure in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, and in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3 Harry Osborn would become the Green Goblin, leading to a vicious confrontation in which Gwen dies. However, Sony changed their plans in order to launch a cinematic universe built around the Sinister Six and condensed the Green Goblin storyline into one movie. Robert Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Jeff Pinkner wrote the script based on Vanderbilt's original idea.

>In early drafts, Mary-Jane Watson is present as Peter's neighbor, a skilled mechanic and waitress who lives with her abusive father and greatly admires Spider-Man. She helps Peter fix Aunt May's car, and Peter repays the favor by vising her father as Spider-Man and intimidating him into leaving MJ alone, and they establish a friendship.

>In early drafts, Peter meets J. Jonah Jameson and Robbie Robertson when he visits the Daily Bugle to discuss a staff job, during which he debates with Jameson on the validity of Spider-Man's methods. Spider-Man and Electro later fight throughout the Daily Bugle offices during their first encounter as Jameson decries them both.

>In early drafts, Max Dillon lives with his domineering, invalid mother. Upon returning home after his accident, he finds her celebrating the hush money she received from OsCorp to not report his disappearance, and demands she hugs him, but when she does, he accidentally electrocutes her, which causes him to snap and become Electro.

>In early drafts, Peter gives Harry his blood, which Harry believes can cure his condition, but it instead leaves Harry disfigured and drives him insane. He finds the weapon prototypes that Norman had stored in his secret laboratory and joins forces with Electro, who had escaped from Ravencroft Penitentiary in search of revenge, to destroy Spider-Man and OsCorp.

>In early drafts, Felicia Hardy had a larger role alluding to her potential transformation into Black Cat, while Aleksei Sytsevich had a minor role and the Rhino was only a bookend villain. Further revisions reduced Felicia's role in favor of the Sinister Six storyline, and also saw Sytsevich's role expanded and the Rhino being included in the team.

>In early drafts, OsCorp is stolen from Harry by Ratha, who is later killed by the Green Goblin. The symbiote created by Peter's father Richard Parker is also in OsCorp's storage.

>In early drafts, it is revealed that Norman's head is preserved in suspended animation following his apparent death while his enforcer Gustav Fiers uses Harry's venom-enhanced DNA to clone a healthy younger body for Norman.

>In early drafts, Richard reveals himself to have survived the plane crash that allegedly killed him and observed Peter from afar to protect him from OsCorp. He comforts Peter after Gwen's death and encourages him to keep fighting as Spider-Man, reminding him that "with great powers come great responsabilities".

>Shailene Woodley was cast as MJ, but all of her scenes were cut, reportedly to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen's relationship.

>Webb wanted J.K. Simmons to return as Jameson, but Sony rejected the idea as they wanted a complete reboot from Raimi's movies. John Slattery and Sam Elliot were approached for the role before the character was cut.

>Alden Ehrenreich, Brady Corbet, Eddie Redmayne, Sam Claflin, Douglas Booth and Boyd Holbrook auditioned for Harry before Dane DeHaan was cast at Garfield's behest. Harry was originally envisioned as a "jock" in contrast to Peter being a geek.

>Damian Lewis was approached to play Electro before Jamie Foxx was cast.

alright user this is getting a little tl;dr

X-Men (2000)

>Kathryn Bigelow, Richard Donner, Robert Rodriguez, Tim Burton, Brett Ratner, John McTiernan, Irvin Kershner, Stephen Hopkins, Danny Boyle and Joel Schumacher were approached to direct the movie before Bryan Singer was hired.

>Early drafts included Beast as a member of the X-Men and Pyro and Blob as members of the Brotherhood of Mutants, as well as the Danger Room, but all of these elements had to be scrapped due to budget conflicts.

>Fox planned for the characters to wear their classic costumes, but Singer advocated for the black leather suits, which he believed evidenced them as a paramilitary unit rather than a team of superheroes.

>Production was fraught with issues including script rewrites, unexpected delays and budget issues. Fox postponed the release from Christmas 1999 to July 2000 and the rescheduled shooting caused several actors and crew members to drop out due to other commitments.

>Fox was skeptical of the movie's potential and enforced several last-minute cuts to shorten the running time. Despite this, Singer believed something should be set up to explore in potential future installments and instructed Famke Janssen to react to being exposed to Magneto's machine to set up her transformation into the Phoenix.

>Fox planned for the characters to wear their classic costumes, but Singer advocated for the black leather suits, which he believed evidenced them as a paramilitary unit rather than a team of superheroes

X2: X-Men United (2003)

>>David Hayter and Zak Penn wrote two different scripts, both centered on the Legacy Virus, which were later combined and revised by Singer, Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris. Singer decided to not use the Legacy Virus in favor of an adaptation of "God Loves, Man Kills".

>In early drafts, Sabretooth and Toad would return as William Stryker's enforcers alongside Archangel, who would have razor-sharp Adamantium wings. Stryker would also unleash a prototype Sentinel during the final battle, but all these concepts were scrapped due to budget restraints.

>In early drafts, Stryker's enforcer is Anne Reynolds, a human loyal to his cause. When the other enforcers were removed, she was made into Lady Deathstrike to inject more action in the third act of the movie.

>In early drafts, Dark Cerebro would cause mutants across the globe to lose control of their powers, but this was scrapped due to budget issues. There were planned cameos for Beast, becoming blue and furry while his colleagues watched in horror; and Gambit, accidentally caused a deck of cards to explode at a bar in New Orleans. Steve Bacic and Jamie Bamford were lined up to play them before the scenes were cut.

>Following her Oscar win, Halle Berry demanded a larger role, and the script was revised to make her the pilot of the X-Jet and later further revised to include a romantic subplot with Nightcrawler.

>Anthony Hopkins was approached to play William Stryker before Brian Cox was cast.

>Steve Buscemi was Singer's original choice to play Nightcrawler, but declined. Neil Patrick Harris and Etham Embry also auditioned before Alan Cumming was cast.

What does Fieg have to do with this?

>David Hayter

I wish all of you capeshitters would die of AIDS. This is AIDS to people who actually like film. You are killing us. Stop killing us.

X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)

>Singer, Dougherty and Harris drafted a script in which Jean returns at the Phoenix and attempts to end conflicts between humans and mutants in her own terms, with the X-Men trying to protect her, the Brotherhood of Mutants attempting to control her, and the United States government hellbent on destroying her.

>Singer's draft featured Emma Frost as Xavier's old flame who can control people's emotions and is recruited by Magneto to brainwash Jean; Gambit as a young thief who joins the Brotherhood, but later defects to the X-Men due to his attraction to Rogue. Singer planned to cast Channing Tatum as Gambit and Sigourney Weaver as Emma Frost,

>When Singer left to direct SUPERMAN RETURNS for Warner Bros Pictures, Fox decided to move on without him and called Simon Kinberg and Zak Penn to write a new draft based on Singer's ideas. They added the mutant cure storyline and made the Phoenix into Jean's malevolent split personality at the behest of producer Tom Rothman.

>Fox rushed the movie into production, leading to scheduling conflicts with several actors including James Marsden, Rebecca Romjin and Anna Paquin, whose characters had to be hastily written off.

>Penn and Kinberg rewrote the script multiple times, leading to numerous scrapped ideas such as a romance between Wolverine and Storm, Alcatraz Island being a mutant prison which Magneto attacks to recruit his army, the final battle between the X-Men and the Brotherhood taking place in front of the White House and the Phoenix leveling the entire city of San Francisco, among others.

>Matthew Vaughn was set to direct the movie and cast Kelsey Grammer and Vinnie Jones as Beast and Juggernaut, but dropped out due to the troubled production. Joss Whedon and Alex Proyas were briefly considered before Brett Ratner was hired to replace him.

>Alan Cumming was approached to return as Nightcrawler, but declined as he was unwilling to undergo the laborous make-up process for such a minor role. He was then removed from the script, which Fox justified by claiming the audience would have trouble following three different blue characters.

>Maggie Grace was originally cast by Vaughn to play Kitty Pryde before Ratner replaced her with Ellen Page. Summer Glau and Eliza Dushku also auditioned for the role.

>Mike Vogel was approached by Vaughn to play Angel before Ratner replaced him with Ben Foster. Nick Stahl also auditoned for the role.

>The movie's troubled production, coupled with Fox's belief that the superhero movie genre wouldn't last much longer, led to them regarding X-MEN: THE LAST STAND as the last movie in the main X-MEN film series, and investing in their spin-off series, X-MEN ORIGINS.

is anyone even reading what this bozo posts?

OPs don't coutn

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)

>Zack Snyder and Len Wiseman were approached to direct the movie before Gavin Hood was hired.

>The movie was originally meant to be rated R.

>In early drafts, Weapon XI is an army of clones of Sabretooth artifically infused with Wolverine's healing factor so they can survive the Adamantium bonding procedure. Wolverine decapitates Sabretooth and slaughter his clones, but one of them escapes and goes on to become the Sabretooth that is later recruited by Magneto and featured in X-MEN.

>Early drafts didn't feature Deadpool, Gambit and Cyclops, who were added to the script to build interest for their own movies.

>Weapon XI would originally be Garrison Kane, a human operative from Team X, but Rothman decided to merge the character with Deadpool due to Deadpool's popularity.

>Gerard Butler was approached to play Sabretooth, but declined. Liev Schreiber was originally approached to play William Stryker, but Jackman insisted that he should be cast as Sabretooth.

>Michael C. Hall was approached for Stryker before Danny Huston was cast.

>Michelle Monaghan was originally cast as Silverfox, but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts and replaced by Lynn Collins.

>Scott Adkins was originally cast as Garrison Kane. When Deadpool and Weapon XI were made into one character, Reynolds provided close-up shots of Weapon XI in last-minute reshoots, while Adkins' fight scenes and faraway shots were kept, and he was credited as Reynolds' stuntman.

>Hood had a notoriously contentious relationship with Rothman due to Rothman's executive meddling, and nearly dropped out of production after Rothman ilegally rebuilt and recolored the Weapon X sets behind his back for make them brighter and cleaner.

X-Men: First Class (2011)

>The project was originally envisioned as a spin-off centered on Rogue, Iceman, Kitty Pryde, Colossus, Angel and Jubilee.

Other characters included Yukio, Logan's bodyguard and lover; Zen, Logan's master in the Hand; Elvis, an American mobster and Shingen's rival; Harada, Shingen's illegitimate son who wants to kill Wolverine to earn his father's love; Viper, an assassin and Harada's lover; and corrupt Chief of Justice Noburo.

>Darren Aronofsky was hired to revise the script and direct the movie, but ultimately dropped out due to scheduling conflicts and was replaced by James Mangold.

>Early drafts included Rogue as Wolverine's companion.

>Jessica Biel was approached to play Viper, but declined, and Svetlana Khodchenkova was cast instead.

X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)

>Matthew Vaugh was originally set to direct the sequel, set in 1963 and centered on the X-Men racing against time to prevent the Magneto and the Brotherhood of Mutants from assassinating President John Kennedy for supressing mutants' roles in preventing the Cuban missile crisis.

>Singer returned after Vaughn left to direct KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE and decided to adapt the "Days of Future Past" storyline to bridge the two series, bringing back the original cast for one last movie.

>In early drafts, Wolverine, Xavier and Beast would recruit Juggernaut to help them break Magneto out of the Pentagon. He'd be a dim-witted former student from the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters and be dropped into the Pentagon from a helicopter, tearing a hole through each floor under he reaches the underground section where Magneto is detained. He was later replaced by Quicksilver.

>Early drafts included a post-credits scene where a meteorite crash-lands outside Magneto's hideout in Mexico and Apocalypse emerges from the crater and possesses Magneto, who then becomes Apocalypse.

>An entire subplot about rescuing Rogue from the X-Mansion overrun by Sentinels so she can replace Kitty as Wolverine's tether to the future was cut and later reintegrated to the movie in the "Rogue Cut", which also reinserted a subplot about Mystique returning to the X-Mansion after Paris and later deciding to leave again.

>Josh Helman was originally hired to play the Juggernaut. When the character was replaced with Quicksilver, Helman was instead cast as William Stryker.

>00's Triple H as Sabertooth

Damn, that would had been cool

Deadpool (2016)

>Early drafts included Cable, but this was scrapped due to budget issues and to focus on Deadpool.

>In early drafts, Ajax's enforcers were Garrison Kane, Wyre and Sluggo.

>Negasonic Teenage Warhead in not included in early drafts, and Colossus was sent to arrest Deadpool rather than recruit him to the X-Men.

>Originally, Colossus' apprentice was intended to be Cannonball, but the writers learned about Negasonic Teenage Warhead from a catalog of Marvel characters available to use and felt the need to include her due to her name alone.

>Originally the movie would end with a massive gunfight between Deadpool and Ajax and his men. Due to budget cuts, the scene could not be filmed, and the writers made it into a joke that Deadpool forgets his bag of guns for the final battle.

>Olivia Munn was approached to play Vanessa Carslyle, but declined in favor of playing Psylocke in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE and Morena Baccarin was cast.

X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)

>Early drafts featured Professor X becoming the fouth Horseman after being corrupted by Apocalypse, but the concept was scrapped and Pyslocke was added.

>Amber Stevens and Zendaya Coleman auditioned for Storm before Alexandra Shipp was cast.

>Tom Hardy and Idris Elba were approached to play Apocalypse before Oscar Isaac was cast.

>Although the Weapon X segment was always part of the script, Wolverine's breakout was added in post-production reshoots.

>The ending of "X-Men: Days of Future Past" with Mystique rescuing Wolverine from Weapon X was added in reshoots based on notes from test-screenings. Singer effectively ignored, rationalizing that although Mystique let Wolverine go at that particular occasion in 1973, he was eventually captured in the ten year gap between the two movies.
