Well I was born into a Muslim family, and I was into mythology as a kid, greek, aztec, persian, all kinds of magical stories and whatnot, but I always just thought of them as stories. As I grew up, I took my parents rituals and stories in the same way, i just didnt say it out loud because i knew thaht would piss off my mother. I dont know if i ever really believed.

I've got bukhari, seerah and Ibn Kathir, plus stuff like reliance of the traveler & various works on usul kicking around.

The point is that when you apply critical thought to that, you can see the political influences on things like classifications of hadith. You can see the way that a lot of what people consider to be fixed "Islam" is the work of scholars. You can also see how scholars have essentially monopolized power (on behalf of ruling elites) by setting the rules (I mean ijma...c'mon).

The point is that when you understand this you can tear it down and rebuild. Some people might not want to - some of us do.
