new to recording/production here

I'm looking to buy an audio interface to record music one-by-one multitrack from my synth into some yet-to-be-determined DAW to be digitally mixed and made into songs.

my budget is small...

I'm thinking either Focusrite Scarlett Solo 2nd Gen or Steinberg UR-22.
the UR22 looks good because it has MIDI meaning I won't have to buy another seperate thing to sequence my synthesizer. However it only has two XLR inputs and I'm only really familiar with 1/4 inch type sounds. My synth has an XLR output, but I usually use the 1/4 inch so that I can run it through effects pedals.

So is it a good idea to convert 1/4 in to XLR using some kind of converter? how much will that cost?

The UR22 does have TRS inputs, they're the big hole in the middle of the XLR input.

>So is it a good idea to convert 1/4 in to XLR using some kind of converter?

Never do that in a live setup, but it's decent enough unless there's shit wiring on your room

>how much will that cost?

10 bucks

clyp.it/22h3eqrw
how bad is this?

great seems like the obviously better option then.

have you any experience with either?
I don't really want to spend more than $150 at this point and two mic inputs + midi I/O seems like a great deal. but obviously quality comes first, no latency or clipping or issues...

Made a fucked up hip-hop snippet today. Is this just shit, or a bit interesting? Mixed it in dual-mono.

clyp.it/04kunznk

this doesn't do much for me, what do you want to achieve? the middle section is more interesting than the beginning, which is too repetitive. also, why is it in mono? might become more powerful if you widen it.

HOT FIRE LIT ASS FUCKING BEAT

no bass no drums just main sound

Im the next kanye west
I am the next ! KANYE WEST !

Thoughts about this?

clyp.it/rloyeajm

too washed out to get a good picture of all the tiny things
if you could lower the level, sounds pretty dope
need more bass but sound pretty good so far

clyp.it/edo3sip4
I suck at making electronic music, i should just stick to analog

i made a synth pop lol

clyp.it/pdnuyqlh

cool drums

Hmm what are you listening to it on cause theres no problems with bass on my end?

buy more bass, i meant more bass line, or more bass layers

Oooo im with you now, na im probs gonna leave it like it is, sparse but groovy.

someone posted an ableton crack the other day but i'm stupid and couldn't get it to work. do i have to uninstall ableton and put it in before it's set up? i was leaning towards ableton because i found a ton of online tutorials and it seems like a good daw but i can't save anything because my pirated version isn't activated

Get lite, only 8 tracks but youll be free of annoyances.

Hey /prod/. So I'm in the process of transferring cassette recordings from my 4 track to my DAW, and I'm trying to mitigate noise. I know you will always have some noise with an analog medium like cassette tapes, but I've already got a problem with a shitty noise floor with my audio interface, so the recording in my DAW has a bunch of jank digital noise on top of the noise from the tape.

I do have izotope rx 4, so the denoiser can get rid of all that shitty hum and noise. But this obviously effects the eq of the recording, and it sounds muffled and boxy with no definition.

Can I just look at the spectrum analyzer of the denoiser and boost the frequencies being cut to compensate? Boosting the eq around 2k as an experiment already makes it sound more normal. Anybody have any similar experiences with digitizing cassettes and or just dealing with noise removal in general?

And this is the reason analog is a thing of the past.

Install

Replace the program in the folder with the cracked version provided

Run key gen

Haven't had any problems yet. I fucking love the new simpler and I regret not upgrading sooner. Seems to be smooth

That's not the reason. He just has a shitty interface and got into cassettes because he thought that's what "tape" is

Just try the boosts or upgrade your shit. That's all you can do

JS Bach inspired reggaeton.

clyp.it/3gjgg4aq
It repeats after 2:30. Would appreciate feedback.

But why do people still use tape when there are computers (apart from trying to be cool and hip by reccing in tape)?

OMNISPHERE EDITION

So, you ever do any cool shit in Omnisphere?

when you play a non-diatonic chord are you considered out of key?

Workflow possibly but I think that's stupid as well

Hipster cool factor

There is desirable saturation and "warmth." You can absolutely emulate it and pretty much nobody can tell the difference, but if you can afford it why not just do the real thing lol.

(The above goes for pretty much all analog gear with a few exceptions where analog emulation just isn't there yet and some exactl emulations of popular gear don't sound exactly like their counterparts)

Yes anything outside of the scale is not considered diatonic

thank you. I'm always afraid of going out of key because I think I'll fuck everything up

I think in terms of modulation so I don't have to call it a "mistake" :)

Makes things more interesting

clyp.it/uadcgghr

i made this loop but i cant seem to place any drums to it they all just sound shit, any tips?

clyp.it/rczco4s4

Should I put a melody on this?

how does Clarence Clarity do this?

youtube.com/watch?v=QLb-FJWFeLU

>clyp.it/uadcgghr
the loop isn't even, notice how the clicks are about 2 seconds apart, except the first and middle ones are about 3 seconds? you can account for hat in a drum pattern, but you can also just make it even.

How is my rapping voice? This song was a joke but I've been thinking of getting into it just wondering what you guys thought of my voice and the flow, just listen to the first person thats me

clyp.it/e2dc1ndf

It is workflow. I have hardware keyboards, and I'm more of a player than a producer. Working in my DAW is just uninspiring and I also feel like I have an infinite amount of options which is daunting and prevents me from getting any work done. Limitations spur creativity and force me to start working and stop being a perfectionist. The immediacy and tangibility of the 4 track feels a lot more natural to me.

I know that the "tape" (You) were referring to is pic related and that cassette tapes pail in comparison, but I'm not about to buy a reel to reel anytime soon. There are plenty of emulations out there, but I enjoy the musical effects that you can get with cassettes like making physical tape loops, reversing things, and fucking with the tape speed and thus the pitch of your recordings. All of these things are much more immediate with a 4 track than producing these effects with a DAW. Cassettes aren't hi-fi, and I am by no means an audiophile, but it still has a different sound than digital. To each his own tho

Your voice is not bad but you're kinda boring to listen to. It's too monotone.

I had a 2i2 which is similar to the Solo and had a couple of problems with the drivers. I've been told that the newer generations are really great though. I can't tell you any experiences about the UR22 because I never tried it, but a friend of mine told me it was great enough for tracking vocals and recording guitar.

pretty dope dude

how this:

clyp.it/npl0qhip

8-9 minutes too long desu. I think you have to have a stronger lead melody over this or some more prominent lead vocals.

If you do want the track to be a little longer, I would recommend repeating the same idea with a key change. You get more mileage out of an idea that way

clyp.it/ql4dpcc5

how do i take this idea and make it more interesting/listenable? like i like it but i just feel like its missing something or that its too boring

Have you tried working with vst synths yet just to get used to DAWs? You can do a fuck ton of stuff without spending a cent.

>song is another song slowed down
what is this shit.

I'n getting back into making music and found my old version of Massive doesn't work anymore. Is it worth looking into another synth? I tried out Zebra which was pretty neat.

I'd add a lead melody or lyrics if possible.

Too minimal to be complete?

clyp.it/rkltccgi

it's vaporwave :^)

i have a ur22 and it is pretty good ive only used it to record guitar though i have no hardware synths yet

How important is it to have a good interface?
I got a sm58 but no interface. I'm tempted to buy the cheapest piece of shit I can find but I'm wondering if it'd be smarter to save up for a couple of months and getting something of quality.

Posted a while back and made some changes based off advice from other anons here. wondering if anyone could lend another ear to the track.

clyp.it/xwpudha3

is it true no one gives a fuck about your track until you put some vocals on it?

What brand/model is your interface? Any interface that adds that much noise isn't even worth existing. Are you sure you're giving it a loud enough signal going into it from the get-go and aren't feeding it a quiet signal and then amplifying it after the fact?

Nah, no one gives a shit after you do either.

but what if they're good?

Somebody might actually give a fuck with some luck.

this is gonna be the base for a song as of now
>tfw i've been producing for 2 days
obvious mixing issues

clyp.it/v12xh533

ill fucking kill you

A good interface is definitely one of the most important things when it comes to recording, so going for the cheapest piece of shit possible is going to bite you in the ass. If you're short on cash you should be able to find a good (albeit discontinued) interface on the used market for cheaper than a new one with similar specs.

Does your computer have a line-in jack (usually light blue colored) on it? You might be able to get away with using that in lieu of buying an interface if your computer's got a decent sound chip on the motherboard. You'd still need something like a mic preamp though, but those are a fair bit cheaper than an interface with one built-in so it may be worthwhile to go that route.

what makes a voice appealing? What is the draw factor in all this? More specifically in hip-hop People want a voice that sticks out and is unique, but tolerable, like Chance the Rapper, or to a lesser extent Danny Brown. How can one manage to sell their voice?

Depends on the music but there's lot of factors.

Being intelligible is definitely important as long as you're not making death metal or dreampop. Being able to sing along to a song is something that gets people drawn to music. Relating to lyrics does as well.

Yeah totally just do you

Plz stop the limitations inspire creativity meme though that shit is so Reddit
>okay enough*

If you know massive really well stick with it. Another wavetable capable synth is serum, which in some ways is also a step up

Depends what you want
Extremely important. I can tell you from experience a gain hungry mic, especially an sm58 needs a better interface. Those cheap shures are famous for how they sound with quality pres, but nobody tells you that. They sound like shit with low end interfaces, and can be finicky

You have to be really fucking good and write really fucking interesting music without vocals, yes it's true.

i always try to add a vocal element to my music. it makes the song more memorable because words are easier for a lot of people to remember,

I fell for the lofi meme
youtu.be/o4dhjfoE_ro

I'm still gonna buy a cheap piece of shit to experiment in the meanwhile (I found a really fucking cheap one) but thanks for the tips. I still haven't found a good one in the used market

My computer is a piece of shit too. Technology is extremely expensive in the third world.

Anyone have any questions like: How did they get that effect on x song?

I'm pretty good at figuring it out and enjoy the practice.

I got one for you. How does Tyler the Creator get such good bass effects in his music. Like more specifically in this song he made just for a music video:
youtu.be/XIqVCJWSoeE?t=1m52s

can you id a synth?

The pad in the second verse of "piggy" by nine inch nails

I've approximated it but I wonder how you would go about that one...

(Happy to help answer these later too, I'm big on sound design)

Lexicon lambda. It's the only interface I've ever had, so it's seen some wear and tear. I think the usb connection itself might be responsible for some of the noise, but I could be wrong.

t. can't play an instrument

lol what made you say that????

I actually play several, all before switching to electronic :p

By the time it gets to the USB connection it's going to have already been converted to a digital signal, so any audio problems that would result from a bad USB connection would be glitches or dropouts, not any sort of noise overtop the signal.

How's your gain staging? Is your 4-track outputting a nice strong signal?

I had the master fader cranked up almost all the way, but I still had to turn up the line inputs on my interface a lot higher than I normally need to with my instruments. I could try recording it again with that extra bump, but I don't think it would make a huge difference. I'll experiment with it

clyp.it/4ke0kvck
heres the clean mix for whoever cares
looking for feedback on mixing/mastering/eq at this point i think

o and the vocal
clyp.it/j2yvaoy4

>I had the master fader cranked up

Jfc that hurt

Leave your master at unity

hey lad, i live in third world too, let me give you some advices

1 - If possible, dont buy shit in your country, people scam you and add several ks to the actual price, if you can ask someone who travels to at least a 2nd world pisshole to buy you stuff, do that, if you don't know anyone look for cellphone contrabandists in facebook and ask them if they can bring it, if they can't either, make some calculations to see if its cheaper to pay import taxes and buy online, if it isn't, then buy from a place that gives you guarantees, don't buy second hand or from local online markets

2 - Don't buy locally assembled computers, i spent a good amount on a good asus laptop, but i later discovered it was assembled here and has a weird interference when i switch on the wifi; for what ive found online, every other person with the same problem has bought asus pcs locally assembled here, so i guess its due to shit/cheap assembly

3 - When looking for interfaces, also check mixers, some of them are usb connected and support sending every channel to the daw, this is great cause for the same price of a meme interface with 2 inputs you get an 8-c-hannel mixer, this might be useful, and i wish i had known about it before. You'd have to research a fuck lot about cheap mixers doe, there's some shifty chinese shit that works horrible out there, stay away from "moon" (unless it is in your "very cheap" range, then go for it, 8c-h-annels is GOOOOOD)

4 - If you are just starting, pace yourself, you don't need to have good quality right away, just get some decent headphones for working, download asio4all, and when you are doing the final mixdown check in every single speaker/headphone available to you, that will do the trick from a starting standpoint, if it sounds well in both your more expensive and cheaper shit, then it probably sounds OK

5 - Work with references track bypassing the master bus, use filters to check every range of freqs is as similar as possible

*Master fader on my 4 track

Not him but lad don't send the master, mix in the box

>not using both
step it up

are you trying to imply that you can't clip or fuck up gain staging with a 4track..?

i do though!

>i do though!
uuh i dig that, are you going for that based organic sound?

would appreciate any sort of feedback, im kind of stuck with this
clyp.it/catcdcqz
not mixed yet, still working on the arrangement

soundcloud.com/FAT_CAT/i-got-yo-numba

second phonk track i've made

who wna collab and make this a bit less repetitive sounding

>organic
hell nah bro i'm all about going FOWARD and DIGITAL

idm masterrace

guitars pianos etc etc EMBRACING our new digital potential. i do not wish to look back 0_____0

Noooooooooo
:(

>idm masterrace
Yeah i agree, i can't into idm for shit, too musically complex im but a humble drummer, but im gonna go for it when i get better

> i do not wish to look back 0_____0
Well but you ARE, digital isn't forward, FORWARD is technology merging with the organic seamlessly, cyberpunk is dead, we now eco-puters, rivers made of hydrating nanobots, forests of o2 to co2 nano-converters

>NO SOUNDCLOUDS, YOU WILL BE BERATED
>NO SOUNDCLOUDS, YOU WILL BE BERATED
>NO SOUNDCLOUDS, YOU WILL BE BERATED

Too short to have much feedback although it's a nice sound for just two days. Keep at it and post a lengthier track next time.

Shit I just exported a track to mp3 and all of a sudden there's this weird noise that sounds like a spooky shriek. I saved it again and it came out fine.

What the hell am I cursed now? How could this happen?

call your local priest asap

It's some horror movie tier shit. I almost freaked out.

clyp.it/rfafogs2
i keep posting in these but no one even takes the time to shit on my shitty songs

Well, that's kind of what I meant but didn't feel like typing it (MERGING)

My ultimate goal is to do that in industrial rock, which I have a rough concept of to form a band, but I'm not good enough a songwriter/(rock) producer to do that yet
>drummer
If you happen to be around Houston and sing let's hook up :^)

i can't sing for shit, nor am i in huston but if you want to set up a dropbox and work together id like that

anyone?

need singing and lyrics, but very solid foundation, keep tinkering but also keep doing what youre doing

Hmmmm, maybe. I've never collaborated online before

How do I drop box

>but also keep doing what youre doing
do you mean like "don't quit your day job"? or like "keep with that style"

you just make an account and give him permission to share with him it is free and many people use it to collaborate

For... FREE??? O:

Thanks for the indirect reminder to backup my ableton folder

Collab guy I will set up tomorrow because it's dream time and I hope you use ableton
