Hipsters.

Do you even pipe, bro? topkek, linux is superior, because you cannot do degenerate shit like gaming - just hard work, like writing code and hacking the government.

I you can live with the fact that you can't play most of the games and some windows only software (MS office, 3dsmax, etc.) than linux is a pretty good OS

Works for me :^)

PEBKAC

Heh, their logo's a penguin.

>It's the most retarded thing I think I've ever used in my life.
Why?

What sound does a penguin make? Does it go quack-quack?

Never could get into Debian. It's either too old or too shaky. *buntu is like the Goldilocks of linux distros.

UnixĂ—BSD only roxx Linux is Just OK...

REEEEEEEEEEE

im on rpi3 right now you just have to use youre brain a little bit, flat earth bro also

>Never could get into Debian. It's either too old or too shaky. *buntu is like the Goldilocks of linux distros.
There aren't development branches for each distro. If a newly released packet on testing/unstable is shaky, then it's shaky on all the other distros it got released on as well.

>There aren't development branches for each distro.
For the software packages, not the OS, obviously.

I lke it because there's so much support for it. They never try out crazy stuff, that makes it predictale. I've tried arch, gentoo, mint and ubuntu too. In fact, gentoo is still running on my laptop.

FreeBSD always... Linux is not pure... But la. Torvald is Nice Guy..

I was using mint because y'all niggas said use mint so ok but then this fucking GRUB thing fucked up my entire computer. Also it crashed every time I tried to use an Nvidia driver. Fuck.

Yeah, but each distro also packages for themselves and usually doesn't pass if it crashes after build. Each distro will usually tweak for their own stuff, be it kernel, wm, shell, etc. *buntu is pretty good about being a midway. Not always rock solid like Debian, but not crash prone as Arch. Best of both at a fair compromise.
Yeah, I know there's issues with how ubuntu's done things. Nothing is perfect except for LFS.

What is your issue exactly? You've got the chance to get some live support outside of irc right now

GRUB don't fuck shit but your mom if you let it. What the fuck did you do? I bet you have an Optimus laptop. It's okay, user, we're here for you, until it's funny.

>grub thing
Can you be more vague?
>nvidia drivers
post /var/log/Xorg.0.log

dont call it retarded just because you're retarded

I was resetting windows for an unrelated reason that probably has to do with too much anime porn and grub kept fucking sniping the reboot and then I got a trillion blue screens when I told it to just go to windows and the ui for it is gone now

I never even told it to install this grub thing what the fuck

Are you dual-booting or did you try to go straight windows again?

I don't even know what that means

Linux definatly isnt for you

are you serious or baiting?
>and grub kept fucking sniping the reboot
how can grub "snipe" a reboot? What do you mean with this?
>got a trillion blue screens when I told it to just go to windows
grub cant bluescreen afaik
>I never even told it to install this grub thing what the fuck
yes you did, its the default bootloader and its obviously required to boot linux and chainload windows consequently

i have so many questions...

Shittier community than league of legends

just go apple, pleb, you make win users look bad

Dude we are trying to help you

Reformat C:
Reinstall windows
Don't ever come back here
Ever

Only to those who are too retarded to even make the slightest of effort.

2-3 people are here trying to help you and you're being cunt.

Fuck off, the linux community wont help faggots like you.

Perhaps the mac community of faggots would be better suited to you

Maybe one of you is

Faggots

Me and one or two other very nice people tried wanted to help you fixing your problems and you didnt even try

Try what, exactly?
You gave me nothing to try.

Fuck you dude penguins rock

because you didnt specify your poblems

I did wtf

Read

Telling me you think I'm baiting doesn't mean I didn't tell you what's wrong.

Linux is dead. Was fun to use 20 years ago

Seriously, you probably fucked your boot sector with so much garbage. Just recover what you can and start over. Get the windows disc/usb, boot into repair and once you're at the command line reformat your drive.
format C:
After that reboot to windows install and reinstall.

All you said was "hurr durr this doesnt work it broke my system" and "I dont know what grub is and that its installed even though every installer screams it in your face since 2009"

Ok cool

...

wrong see that looks very alive and pleasant to me

Fucking 4chom full of epic neckbeards "just try mint it's easy windows is fucking stupid" and then get mad at you when it fucks your shit up fuck you

>cont
I'd even go so far as to dban the whole harddrive.
If you're this bad, you probably have a rootkit haunting around. Kill it with fire, the whole thing.

You're using the wrong OS, nigger

I think I've figured that out by now but thanks

/Thread

please just leave if you cant even read a fucking intruduction written by the good people of your distro of choice. you probably lower the average iq of this thread. just leave pls

Which distro did you try out OP?
Also the linux environment is better to program in than say Windows and it's free to install.

It's not fucking hard if you have any kind of sense about you. Do a little, and I mean bare-bones research, as to what to expect. Fuck, even youtube for retards gives step by step for retards. Google is always a thing. You have to be pants on head, after shitting retarded to fuck up a linux install these days.

1. its not just free to install, its truly free (as in freedom)
2. that guy is so dumb that he would probably manage to kill himself with a bloody spoon by accident

Linux environment is SO good, microsoft will give you a shit version of it to use IN windows.

Mint is easier than fucking your mum. Seriously it does almost all the work for you. The only easier one is Ubuntu. There is tons of good documentation out there to fix your problem. You're clearly only interested in trolling. Eat shit and tell your mum she owes me for the blow.

"good nice people" y'all think you're so epic for using an archaic and shitty OS and then providing worse tech support than some fat fart from India named Rakesh and then blame me for being retarded when you can't even offer a single bit of advice other than to leave

But you're fat, you're sweaty, you're sad, you're in your mum's basement, you have carpal tunnel, and you typed up a calculator in Python and told all your friends you hacked the government because you're an epic Sup Forums programmer who understands everything

>Ubuntu easier than Mint
How the fuck is that when Mint is based on Ubuntu to make it easier for retards?

why am i even replying to this?

windows gets drink by linux

Don't get mad at us for your own incompetence. You know how many times I reinstalled ubuntu cause I fucked something up? A whole lot less than I did Windows because it fucked itself. Both equaling a shit ton of times. I ran a 10 yr old 40 GB HDD into oblivion. Thank god it was a Hitachi or else I wouldn't have had shit to play with.

Because you have to be a retarded not to understand how to work unity. Mint doesn't run unity by default.

Put me in the screencap

I hated Unity because it was, IMO a tablet/touch/DE, which it would have been great at. I held out until just last year. XFCE and LXDE were my bag, baby. Now, that i've finally used it and grown to like it, their going to toss it aside. Fucking cunts. I'm not worried, it'll be maintained I'm sure. Beats the hell outta GNOME3 . If all else fails there's the good ol' standby XFCE.
Now, how is Mint different? Cinnamon, Mate or that restricted-extras are already in the iso? Seems pretty casual to me.

^Fag

Fuck off neckbeard

...

Unity isn't going anywhere but a backburner flavor. Just like kde, xfce, lxde and mate. Too many people worked too damn hard to let it go to waste. It's arguably one of the comfiest DE's out there. Mind you, this is coming from someone who hated Unity for more than half it's current lifetime.

whats wrong with linux it has its place

>not using unix

People still dual boot? Why? Virtualization has been mature enough to make dual booting obsolete for some time now. KVM + QEMU is fucking godly, and FreeBSD and OpenBSD are both actively working on their own which should be even better in time.

>OS on the majority of the world's computers
>dominant OS for enterprise servers, supercomputers, and now cloud infrastructure
>dead

What do you recommend then? PajeetOS 10?

I have Windows 10 (and have always used Windows my whole life) but want to switch to a different OS (for numerous reasons i can elaborate on if younwould like). The thing is, i am a complete pleb when it comes to tech. Where do i even begin to learn what i need to?

>Who the fuck even likes this shit?
Well it is definitely not made for retarded niggers.

Linux does have notoriously bad documentation. Even Arch and Gentoo are a joke compared to the BSDs.

>I lke it because there's so much support for it. They never try out crazy stuff, that makes it predictale.
predictable and stable. Debian is rock solid.

Xfce was the DE I first used long term, and I still like it. Do yourself a favor though, and give some window managers a try. At the very least you'll walk away realizing that Xfce is bloated as fuck.

Fluxbox is fucking awesome once you get passed how shitty and stripped down the default install is. That's the point though. It gives you a bare minimum desktop that's easy to configure into literally anything you want it to be. Other WMs and DEs also offer customization as well, but where Fluxbox shines is in the ease of doing it. Almost every aspect of it can be altered by editing simple text files.

still better than windows documentation.

Unity is a case study in epic failure. Ubuntu was like yea we're going to make our own DE. And someone was like, yea but how are we going to make it stand out against all those wonderful DEs out there? After months of serious deliberation they decided to make the shittiest DE possible, and they worked their asses off to do it. Unfortunately they forgot that Gnome3 already exists, and they could never have hoped to make theirs that shitty, so basically Canninical's devs fail at even failure.

>Linux does have notoriously bad documentation. Even Arch and Gentoo are a joke compared to the BSDs.
u have man pages, online wikis, forums and chats. What else do u need?

Thank you

You learn by doing, but just keep everything backed up or learn on a dual partition/virtual machine that you don't mind fucking up. Linux does not really require much if any learning anymore though. Distros like Mint and Manjaro exist to make it as user friendly as possible.

You don't get the full power of Linux with user friendliness though, and these sorts of Distros do everything to discourage you from digging any deeper. Install and use one long enough to get comfortable and then force yourself to learn to do shit the 'hard' way. Start by learning to use the terminal. In time you'll grow to see that the hard way is actually a lot more simple--simple /= easy.

The more hands on Distros do have learning curves, but they are designed to be more simple. While learning to use (and in some cases--Arch and Gentoo--installing them) them you learn what's going on beneath the hood. When shit breaks you will not only have a better idea about how to fix it, you will have considerably less unnecessary layers of abstraction and complexity to swim through in order to troubleshoot and fix the problem.

There used to be a distro called damn insecure Linux. It was basically broken from installation. The idea was for you to go in and fix it yourself, and thus learn about what it takes to harden a system. Great idea for learning about security. Unfortunately it's a dead project now.

>After months of serious deliberation they decided to make the shittiest DE possible
kek and agreed

It says i dont have permission to access the distrowatch server

>Unfortunately they forgot that Gnome3 already exists
they knew exactly that gnome3 existed because unity is simply a graphical shell FOR gnome3 you fucking mongoloid
t. kde masterrace

Most appreciated user. When you say partition, what exactly does thst mean? Is it the same as partitioning a hard drive? I have heard of such thing but have never actually done ot know why one would do it, but i can learn.

By terminal do you mean rhe command prompt? If so i will start playing around with thst. I agree that knowledge/ learning comes from experience, so i will try these things. Thanks again.

>go to upgrade windows 7 to windows 10
>windows 10 upgrade tool locates my ext2 debian partition
>windows 10 upgrade tool deletes my ext2 partition

I honestly don't understand how freetards don't like Windows.

It did you a favor

...

OpenBSD'documentation. Anything you could possibly think to ask is likely already answered there, often in great detail. If the OpenBSD devs tell you to go read the fucking manual, they are doing you a bigger favor than you can imagine.

FreeBSD's handbook is about on part too, plus the community are considerably nicer to noobs.

Not him, but ill answer anyway:
>Is it the same as partitioning a hard drive
yes, its exactly that. you go into your windows partition management and free up some space by shrinking an existing partition (most likely your C: drive). leave the space unallocated.
>By terminal do you mean rhe command prompt
Also yes, but terminal really is the appropriate name for it. If you want to try it out, search for "linux subsystem windows" or mingw. They're both not as good as the real deal and may seem useless on windows, but its still better than nothing. also, the default windows terminal emulator is horrible

there are two kinds of operating systems:

- the ones where you can only start some apps, and let them do everything for you

- and the ones where you can literally do everything in every fucking way you want, and even start some apps that do something for you

Linux is the latter.

>linux
>operating system
pick one

>Is it the same as partitioning a hard drive?

Yes. Manually partitioning a hard drive can be a seriously confusing task if you don't understand it, and dual booting makes it even worse. It's best to begin by letting your installer handle it for you, and if possible keep each OS on its own dedicated hard drive--most people have multiple hard drives these days anyway.

For dual booting Windows and Linux, you probably should (and likely are) starting with a system where Windows is already installed. This is good. Windows is very picky about where it exists on a hard drive, and Linux installers take that into account when installing themselves alongside it. Trying to add Windows to an existing Linux system can be a colossal headache.

You can use virtual machines too like I said. There are options for Windows users, but they do not compare to KVM on Linux. KVM + QEMU allow you to run Windows or whatever at near native speed, through hardware pass through. This means you can load Windows in a vm and play your games or use photoshop with reasonable performance. This isn't something you'll like be able to setup yet though. In Windows, Virtual Box is likely your best bet as it's basically free, and intended to be user friendly, but it's significantly weaker than KVM/QEMU. Still it might be a nice way to try out different flavors of Linux, just don't assume that the performance you get from a Linux VM is an indication of what you'd get from a native Linux installation.

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

When he says Linux I'm guessing he means GNU plus Linux, it's just that he's not a complete faggot, and feels no need to suck Richard Stallman's dick.
