Is he overrated or a genius?
Will we ever see an artist like Frank in our lifetime?
Imo I think he was a bit of an asshole but confident in his art and opinions.
I admire his conservative and slightly progressive leaning ideology.
I also like that he fought for freedom of speech and fought against censorship from the government.

Frank was the definition of a professional. He was so prolific and he ran his operation so tightly his band rehearsed all day until they nailed every god damn note. Also to be as subversive as he was back then is a pretty big deal. He was absolutely no joke and probably one of the best musicians humanity has ever had. I mean that seriously. Before he died he was just getting into computers and stuff so it would have been cool to see all the shit he would have done. Too bad he couldn't have found his butt cancer soon enough.

Also Frank Zappa influenced a degree of post modern art and music in Central Europe during the cold war. The first president of Czechslovkia was a huge a fan of Frank Zappa and wanted to make Frank as an ambassador to the new country after the wall fell.

People stopped setting Petrarch to music five centuries ago. Lyrics are much more iambic these days. About the only poetic lyricist anymore is Robert Hunter.

I love all his stuff man, everything from hot rats to letter. His lyrics are some of the few that'll I'll sing aloud at random times, even though I haven't heard the tune in ages. Montana actually pops in my head a lot. It's still absurd and he was more about speaking through his notes than vocally imo. He even ends up talking rather than singing in so many of his songs.

Also the reason I started this post is my middle name is Zappa my parents named me after him, I was born exactly a year he died, well he passed Dec 4th 1993 but I was born Dec 5 1994.
Showed up to say exactly this. I dunno about the latest lineup, I saw about a dozen shows with the Bozzio-Vai-Nappy and Ray White lineups. The band is fantastic and Dweezil has both his dad's technique and his sound *down*.
