To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick's existential catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. I kind of agree but your also a dick about it. Something can be really smart and subtle, but also appreciated by those who are less aware of these things. It's like how you enjoy a cartoon cuz it makes you laugh as a kid, and then watch it when your older and wiser and appreciate the subtle nature and embeded messages in it. It opens the door to them and allows them to experience discovering it twice so to speak.

You absolutely do not need to know theoretical physics to understand Rick and Morty. While some of the ideas are based in physics, most of them are heavily distorted for the purpose of the show. For example, there is an important concept in quantum mechanics: an "uncertainty principle" that exists between non-commuting observables; but this has nothing to do with the indecision or uncertainty of a conscious observer!
Most of the philosophy is quite relatable too. The show seems to primarily explore the struggles with nihilism and absurdism that many people encounter, with an emphasis on affirming life through adventure and family.
