The christians believe that from when Christ was crucified until tribulation is the day of grace. Once revelation begins we will be in the time of tribulation. Revelation is nuanced and dense, but in a nutshell, yes the earth and its people will be over run by degeneracy and evil (including a global govt) and eventually the earth will be destroyed but not before the return of Christ, who will call the "faithful" home either before or after (a point of contention theologically) tribulation.
The idea is that the humanity is destined for apocalypse and destruction (sorry no replicators and galactic exploration), but the earthly destruction is a necessary step in the path to the eventual heavenly existence. Santan will destroy the earth and mortal man, only to be cast out from the perfect heavenly existence which is to occur after the destruction of the earth. The lost souls will be cast into hell at the white throne judgement, and the saved will join Christ in heaven.
This is what some of them believe at least, when you try to put revelation in a nutshell it sounds insane. it's a bizarre read and very very metaphorical, but it's actually a though provoking myth about the fate of man, even if you only read it as myth.
