look, i don't really think you can claim to identify with that story unless you are like 50+ years old, maybe even older
sure, you can maybe understand the characters experiences presented in the film, the drugs, the madness, the chaos, etc. sure, maybe you can claim to emotionally sympathize with the themes (the lack of meaning to life, the lack of sensibility in society, the lack of justice, right and wrong mean nothing, morality is entirely debatable, etc.)
but to really get what he's saying, i think you have to be pretty old. you need to have been in the world when there actually hope, the kind of hope he was talking about in that beautiful monologue after the week-long binge
