Most people are not guided by a methodical construction and deconstruction of a set of personal social principles through which they attempt to exert influence on the community around them. They are not guided by intellectual curiosity. How many people do you know or see on facebook or social media who use statistics or empirical evidence to support their points? Probably quite a few. How many of those people do you think have bothered to pick up a book teaching them the basics of statistical analysis, common pitfalls in interpreting empirical evidence and the tendency toward drawing misleading conclusions, and how to avoid making such mistakes? Probably not too many of those people. It's because most people, Democrats or Republicans, do not care about the truth, or making sure they understand reality. People today don't understand the value of self-education. They don't understand that knowing HOW to interpret information is actually more important than WHAT the information is.
There is insofar as I can see an often-unconscious mis-appropriation of peoples' ego in defending their arguments. If one were to take, for example, a biologist who, after running a set of experiments on a cage of white mice, found that he had misinterpreted his statistics to draw a conclusion that could not be true, the scientist would more often than not immediately correct the error and move on with his business. We do not see such a case happen in the sphere of political debate and argumentation. People defend losing arguments and fail to self-correct. The misguided idea is that one's own credibility and, perhaps wisdom, rest on the assumption that he should always be right. Being right is not viewed as an objective status based on the facts, but instead, being "right" is viewed as a victory on the battlefield, a WWE championship belt to be wrested away from the competition.
When this becomes par for the course, among the populace, Trump becomes the president we deserve.
