Are you ok? When this album clicks it usually means you're not ok.

...

nah man, I'm fucking depressed

Virtual hug OP

This just clicked for me

>tfw this clicked on first listen
time to kill myself

Anyone else have a problem with how upbeat some of the melodies are on this album? Apart from a few songs I don't really find this a depressing listen

it's very melodic so I'm sure it clicked on the first listen for many people, it did for me. that said having a deep hatred for yourself certainly helps

>Nobody broke your heart
>You broke your own cause you can't
>finish what you start

It clicked on the first listen for me too. Stick around, man. Elliott's got some great healing music.

don't give up, user. will you be another fool, or will you be the exception to the rule?

have you started listening to any of his live shows?

when I went to Belgium last spring I took an hour train ride through the country to a small town listening to this and it was one of those perfect moments

youtube.com/watch?v=Sh_6_4Ciziw

I can't tell if the people in this thread are being ironic anymore

I'm so high i thought you were saying that you went to see him last spring

welcome

u rite

>Got bitten fingernails and a head full >of the past
>And everybody's gone at last
>A sweet, sweet smile that's fading >fast
>Because everybody's gone at last
>And you don't get upset about it
>No, not anymore
>There's nothing wrong
>That wasn't wrong before
>Had a second alone with a chance >let pass
>And everybody's gone at last
>Well, I hope you're not waiting
>Waiting around for me
>Because I'm not going anywhere
>Obviously
>Got a broken heart and your name >on my cast
>And everybody's gone at last
>Everybody's gone at last

>post-ironic
So, genuine?

dude his lyricism is great, he's underrated as a lyricist/guitarist/musician. tons of shit that he made and never released will go unheard and it makes me sad. some of his demos sounds like his best songs

youtube.com/watch?v=GgNR9fKShY8

>not just simply liking the album for how it sounds.
You guys are overly emotional.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-irony

That's what's so depressing about it.

>a return from irony to earnestness
So I was right. You could have just said yes.

my bad friend, so what's your favorite Elliott Smith album?

Yeah. A return to sincerity.

Roman Candle

OP here
listening to this again
i can't hold all these feels

Oh boy. Just wait until you get to pic related. It's actually hard to listen to because of how fucked up the lyrics are. Absolutely beautiful record though.

I don't feel anything when I listen to his music. Do I have Asperger's or something?

I remember this song fucking my shit up after my first breakup

If someone just had taken his time to make him know how important he was for us and that he wasn't alone

My first Earl album. Listened to it multiple times before it finally clicked with me.
>Drink up with me now and forget all about
>The pressure of days, do what I say
>And I'll make you okay and drive them away
>The images stuck in your head

that's my favorite too! I went crate-digging with my uncle when I first got into records and I picked out some records he bought me. when I showed him Roman Candle he said "tell me you're not into that emo shit" and it blew my mind cause I don't find Roman Candle to be the epitome of sad music or anything. it deserves more than to be brushed off as "emo music"

nice shitpost, haha xDD

if you're gonna go deep with Elliott Smith, listen to Heatmiser. it was his band before he went solo

youtube.com/watch?v=9-zflTqOxMw
youtube.com/watch?v=kgNMZbOiCe4
youtube.com/watch?v=db32BoQ7NA4

thanks anons, will check it out

It helps if you're a drug addict or severely fucked in the head (both in my case).

Or if they hadn't killed him

Save "From A Basement on the Hill" for last. Listen to XO, Figure 8, self-titled, and Roman Candle before.

XO and Figure 8 are overproduced.

Any sort of weakness or humanity helps.

I feel like he was just going for a different sound user

youtube.com/watch?v=Upa8BpZmbD8

Nah, that doesn't work. Watch this video. Listen to what Jack Black has to say, it's a perfect response to what you just posted.

youtube.com/watch?v=NmHDSuTYmIk

XO kind of is but it's still a great record. Figure 8 has some of his best songs but also some of his weakest. Also a great record though.

>Blackout
What a fucking song man. The best of what grunge had offered to us

Also Half Right is another one that I love. It give you those FEELS.

>Also Half Right is another one that I love. It give you those FEELS.
The solo version off his Elliott's "New Moon" compilation record is a lot more sad.

this gives most feels

youtube.com/watch?v=h-IYSl4I-4I

what a fucking waste of space i hate lil b

It's still kinda cool to see a hip hop artist admire someone like Smith

The combination of an upbeat melody and depressing lyrics is literally one of my favorite musical things

youtube.com/watch?v=t4e9FLyiYVg
youtube.com/watch?v=GF0ekwkhG4A

Are these the saddest Elliott Smith songs?

Take it back, XO is a perfect album

How the fuck did an Elliot smith album have to "click" for you

>Fall for a girl
>I was too late

I think Better Be Quiet Now is his saddest. You can FEEL the defeat in his voice and in the lyrics.

youtube.com/watch?v=ISfJX8toAiY

When you're on your last legs struggling with depression, you'll learn to love those songs because it's almost like they're mocking happy people by giving the illusion that they're happy.

live at studion is so fucking good, i have it up on mega for anyone interested

mega.nz/#!UFFHGDDJ!s6WP4qxe75lJVrugthTbV07KnY8gzh0VRJyhcsZVpuA

you're only on the first step op, i went through his entire discography in the winter and it was incredible.

I love you

you're welcome user, the versions of division day and some song from that show are so much better than the studio recorded ones. don't get too sad now

That's a great picture of him. Shame there aren't too many of those around. It's nice to see one where he looks genuinely happy.

i'm currently rereading torment saint, it's a really good biography. lots of interviews with childhood friends and people who knew him when he was starting out in portland. it gets unbearably sad towards the end but that's to be expected, really interesting read though, check it out (but don't be put off by the intro chapter, it's a little pretentious but as soon as it gets into the details of his actual life it's fascinating)

I'm already about as depressed as can be, but Elliott always makes me feel a little bit more content with my situation. Loving this share so far

Twilight always hit me really hard
youtube.com/watch?v=sJthA4l8S5U

>be me after first big breakup
>put on this album for the first time in a while
>mfw that line

I wanted her to tell me that she would never wake me

St. Ides Heaven, Christian Brothers, Needle in the Hay, and Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands all fuck me up hard
