Are there benefits for a fighter to have a lot of excess fat? I can´t imagine that someone can rely on a layer of fat to soften the punches, especially not at heavyweight. Realisticly, if two fighters have the same experience, technique and style but one is lean and the other is fat, the latter will probably always lose, due to cardio issues for example.

That makes no sense. Fat may be lighter, but its useless weight and doesn´t move your body. That means if a fat fighter wants to have the same movement capabilities as a lean fighter, he needs to have the same amount of muscles.
