Mark McGuire?
youtube.com/watch?v=wmW7Lbdkh9E&ab_channel=MarcosR.

Not my area of expertise but hopefully you like those.

Did anyone else listen to Ben Frost's new thing with Steve Albini? I thought it was okay. Bit of a letdown.

Hammock is another one i like that i should have mentioned, great stuff

Mark McGuire sounds cool, this is pretty dreamy indeed

thanks!

William Basinski - A Shadow In Time
Biosphere - Substrata
Povarovo - Tchernovik
Aphex Twin - Selected... Vol II
Cluster - Cluster & Eno
Tim Hecker - Harmony in Ultraviolet
The Caretaker - An Empy Bliss...
Rhys Chatam - A Crimson Grail

And of course: Brian Eno - Ambient1/Music For Airports and Ambient4/On Land

The Field.

Start with... Hmm. "Looping State Of Mind" is good: youtube.com/watch?v=x9KLCMqjlyw&ab_channel=whateveralesme

"Raise The Dead" is a little more ambient leaning youtube.com/watch?v=6ONu9uumvyA&ab_channel=101Underworld

"Reflecting Lights" and "A Paw In My Face" are my favorites though.

autechre - incunabula
move d - kunststoff
john beltran - ten days of blue

Minimal and repetitive, but masterful about it. Same label as Gas and the Field. youtube.com/playlist?list=PLNpuni88mD7AyCwYej_UOCHMa_CaFsO_1
Any Taylor Duepree fans here?
youtu.be/1gnLjckCQc4

that's because you don't know it

youtube.com/watch?v=D7aYjRl_6Zw&
youtube.com/watch?v=LT0kUvxtpe4
youtube.com/watch?v=kSNLA4thH_0

deupree is fantastic. i think he's a cut above his comtemparies in a lot of ways. i've only listened to faith, stil and snow however. any idea where i should go next? also have you listened to many other artists on the 12k label?

entry level as fuck, jesus

pls post good ambient that i can listen walking to work as the sun's coming up preferably around 30 minutes in length
the only record i know that works really well is tomorrow's harvest

you misunderstand. the 'concept of new age' must die. and i know all of these man. yoshimura is the standout, but his sensibilities lean away from the 'relaxing new age' and more toward the the emotive, the evocative found in average settings

...

this one if you're feeling particularly emotional youtube.com/watch?v=9JHMSQIf9cc

Been really digging Loscil lately, anyone got anything similar?

God its been too long
Seconding hammock, good shit

I love taylor deupree's music
hopefully I'll work up the courage to send him some music to master someday. His studio looks insane. I often wonder how he affords that setup, working with such a niche genre.

pic related
there's so much fucking money in this picture, how does he do it?

Alva Noto - Xerrox Vol1, 2 & 3
Ryuichi Sakamoto & Fennesz - Cendre
Fennesz - Endless Summer
Fennesz & Jim O'Rourke - It's hard for me to say I'm sorry
William Basinski - Disintegration Loops

aaah i had forgotten about this, this album is fucking great for just melting in your bed completely high

i had totally forgotten about this

this thread is full of old friends

Best Basinski
youtube.com/watch?v=pX_jySkFIK4

at this rate never

we need more ambient generals

Brock Van Wey's White Clouds Drift On And On is the soundtrack to every sunrise

youtu.be/eXrfWN1ggcc

mmm?

youtube.com/watch?v=jrTQXpqRsDA

mix it at 0:40 of hiroshi yoshimuras disc

and then keep looping the next 10 secs cause then the music starts and it really doesnt fucking match

this one is so underexposed
love this album

Anyone got anything similar to Grouper? Its close enough to ambient for me desu

okay, I haven't really into ambient that much, and I would really love to, does anyone have a flow chart to help me out?
also I have absolutely fallen in love with Time Machines, that third track is something completely out of this world

Ambient generals are comfy

stars of the lid was my gateway
tracks like articulated silences are so beautiful

sygur ros/radiohead is entrypoint, then you fall more and more progressively into a droning bliss

sotl are still my #1 fav

NEW ODD NOSDAM OUT TOMORROW

LIF

youtube.com/watch?v=zsZUcTYsXFM

Luxury Problems is better.

if youre into anco at all, campfire songs

Do you have a link?

this guy is correct Campfire Songs is fucking awesome, like if Grouper was really happy and hung out in the woods a lot

Also hi guys. I keep finding myself coming back to Belong's October Language, does anyone know of any similar stuff with a lot of noise over a looped tune? The closest I know of are Going Places and Tim Hecker's incurably optimistic!

Not the same guy, but just so happens I'm listening to Articulate Silences right now.

stars of the lid is what people will say but imo you should start with A Winged Victory For The Sullen's self titled, it's half of stars of the lid but with a pianist, which imo makes it more accessible (it's also my favorite ambient album)

Is there a pastebin for this /general/?

idk if this is what youre looking for, but the hecker track has always reminded me of this youtu.be/Dd6tmwa01tQ

Regardless, still an awesome release

E M E R A L D S

why'd they have to break up man

Tomorrows Harvest is so incredible, I wish more people appreciated it

This is not what I was expecting but it's awesome thanks so much for the rec

If you enjoyed that, id recommend this aswell youtu.be/d0jZGkZlLnc

Very short but beautiful. Made in the 80s by a japan artist utilizing samples from french films. Personal 10/10

It's OK. I was so excited to hear they worked on this together.

youtube.com/watch?v=fSGaHSlnp4A

Yes

Hey friends. I have a question for you: what was your first experience with ambient music? When did it happen to you? Can you remember the song?

For me it was realizing the harold budd song "Dead Horse Alive With Flies" was really doing something to me, emotionally, when it came on a pandora station in 8th grade.

What about you?

i love him

the song "Negative Snow" is immense and enveloping

GAS - Zauberberg
Ryuichi Sakamoto and Fennesz - Cendre
Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto - Vrioon
Ryoji Ikeda - Dataplex
Autechre - Confield
Tim Hecker - Love Streams

What are the best ambient records made by the anons here (talking about the self promo threads)

Listening to "The tired sounds of stars of the lid" and thinking "what is this? it's nothing"
And then realize, after more listens, that that nithing was beautiful

bzaurie i think posted here once and it is so good soundcloud.com/bzaurie

negative snow is amazing

first time smoking weed at a radiohead show and they start doing some 20min really slow drony-tier jam and i cant stand anymore so i sit in the floor with my head between my knees and its really windy so i go to heaven for the next 20 min while my head is being directed through all these dreams by their sound

from then on i became a fan of listening to music moments before sleeping/waking up in that moment when you are half awake half asleep and you become synesthetic, good ambient is god tier cause it doesn't freak you into waking up but isn't boring enough to sleep you so you ride that astral space for as long as you can

mah man

I know all these albums fuckerrrrrrrrrrr

Check out Main if you're into SOTL.

youtube.com/watch?v=8jEAA4AgNC4

(SOTL sample this)

discogs.com/artist/11126-Main

youtu.be/FEaABPAw_t8

what Time Machines is this?

coil (1998), most specifically the track 3. "5-Methoxy-N, N-Dimethyl (5-Me0-Dmt)"

BenoƮt Pioulard does the drone/ambient folk thing pretty good imo also check out Mirroring - Foreign Body if you haven't already it's a collab grouper did with Tiny Vipers

I used to love post-rock in high school and I saw This Will Destroy You in their drone phase

I hated it and was very disappointed

Gradually though projects like Hammock, July Skies, and Sigur Ros' Valtari got me into ambient

Been really digging the new Ellen Arkbro

Well on tour apparently they've had new equipment so I'm hoping soon

Any ambient album that sounds like SFTB?
i really dig the feeling and aesthetic of the more ambient songs on that album. Especially mellothumb and the beautiful days.

>Ryuichi Sakamoto and Fennesz - Cendre
This one is really comfy, too bad the other releases aren't as good.

listening to this at the moment. love space vibes dark ambient, any recommendations like it?

a shadow in time is easily one of basinski's worst records
people only like it because melon finally reviewed him
for christ's sake the sax loop is god awful and the drone piece is merely passable then it gets ruined with the ending being a loop he's used twice already before to greater effect

if you want a good basinski record, melancholia

Something David Firth put in his animations.
I think it was An Ending (Ascent) he used in a Salad Fingers animation. It was that or either 1/1.

I just remember he used a lot of Brian Eno, BoC, and AFX and that got me into experimental and ambient music when I was in middle school.

Boards of Canada sidetracked me into Stars of the Lid and went from there

I'm listening to it right now. Sounds good so far.
It seems closer to By The Throat than to Aurora, which is not a bad thing (although I love both records equally).
I wish he stopped making soundtrack for fucking dance shows and worked on his personal stuff more.

What do you think of Watermusic II?
I could listen to that all day. Beautiful sounds.

It's the closest I can get to another Jurgen Muller album.

I know if it's not proper ambient, but By The Throat started it for me.
It's one of those records I wish I could get knock on the head and lose memory so I can discover it again.

im going to post it until everyone agrees with me

youtube.com/watch?v=KGE7q0oDlEI

it's been a while since i've listened to watermusic ii, gonna pop that on now
good album

basically all he had to say about disintegration loops was that they're generic
das it
oh and "MUH NINE ELEBBEN"

so you're just stupid then

that's all he had to say
the first half of the video he gives some context and history of loop based music, which is great and all, but then immediately after he says "he's done it again," he gets so unbelievably triggered by an artist making art that all he says boils down to "I think the loops are generic and have some cheesy effects" and "but 9/11 guys 9/11 guys hey 9/11 fuck you"

Thinking of getting into ambient.
Are Brian Eno and Steve Roach good places to start?

Yellow Swans in their gentler releases. I'm pretty sure one of the guys in YS dated Liz too
Allegory of Allergies is one of my favorite drone albums
youtube.com/watch?v=2uLstSFRSPA
Fripp & Eno - No Pussyfooting when I was around 15 or 16, since I just discovered Roxy Music and KC.

yes but keep in mind that they're not representative of the genre.
brina eno invented ambient but his sound dated a lot, and steve roach it's a little too 80s and new age-y.
op's pic is a modern masterpiece.

Ok cheers for the advice lad

Not necessarily space themed but I think it'll do the trick

Shadow is the best thing he made in a long time because:

> 1st track has something else than your regular sustain piano or strings. Plus it's two distinct separate loops going in and out of sync. Something new for him.
> 2nd track is something else than your regular sustain piano or strings.

The only bad thing about the album is recycled Melancholia loop.

> Plus it's two distinct separate loops going in and out of sync

big whoop

Does anyone have a download of October Language in 320?

eno's early work is anything but dated, if you discount ambient 4, maybe and stuff mid 80s onward. you've works like discreet music and ambient 1 that are timeless classics.
one might say that their conception of ambient, then, is outdated. perhaps this meshes more for the fully-realized ambient 1, but i'd still say those early works have meshed to fit the current emotive qualities of the ambient style

use soulseek

basinski is a visionary when it comes to loops, no doubt about that. some may criticize the sheer output of relatively-similar releases, yet his catalogue has honed his abilities to a T-- covering a wide breadth of spaces. i'd even say his disintegration loops release helped shape the state of current ambient / drone music
