My guess is that it did happen but not in the way people tell about it. That is, germans were actively persecuting jews, killed them at the slightest retarded justification do so and did not give a fuck about them in general letting them all die of diseases. In the eastern front, there were many episodes where they rounded up all the jews in a village and killed them all.
The stuff about the death camps is probably half true, as it was mostly denounced by the soviets. However, it would not surprise if germans tried to gas jews. Most likely, however, they did not kill as many people as claimed.
