I would like to know your opinion on whether or not democratic socialism could work in America.

If it's not too much to ask, let's try to keep it civil

Could it work? Sure. Will it work? Not likely. Why won't it work? The need for self limitation is not the message Muricans want to hear. Jimmy Carter tried sending a message expressing the importance of self limitation and knowing the limits of our nation. Our choices in this nation affect not only us but the world at large. I am all for practicing some degree of democratic socialism but the fundamental flaw of human greed and sociopathic national identity will get in the way. I just cannot wait until some brave nation steps in to check the US into place. It honestly has been a long time coming. I would support sanctions if they were placed against my own country.

-U.S. citizen

No.

Socialism can not work because the government cannot properly determine market price. Besides that the only way it's efficient is to bulk up on government. The more gov you have the easier corruption can gain power. Blah blah blah taxation is theft

it will never work because I don't know if you've noticed this but people fucking hate each other m8

>the fundamental flaw of human greed and >sociopathic national identity

Those are human survival mechanisms, not pathologies. Jesus, you're an ass.

It's cancer. Entitlement culture makes people weak. A country that builds its foundation on weakness will never truly be strong.

I think the idea that you're gonna put people in power who are going to decide in totality what's for you, by you and best for you is a bad idea.

History has shown us that it's always a bad idea.

They betray our role as rational actors and moral agents. Justify it however you wish, but arguing in favor of systems to that these behaviors make you morally ill.

I think it absolutely could work, I think a lot of people would enjoy it and reap the benefits if it was already implemented.

However, is it possible to even implement the system in America? Currently, no. Many people believe in small government for a variety of reasons. Democratic socialism is, by definition, a very, very big government policy. This would not go down well.

Canada's working pretty good with it

You're judging my morals? Hilarious. You collectivists think you can get people to behave against their natural tendencies. Then you end up trying to force them. That's why normal people hate leftists.

Who?

if you can convince the conservative crowd that the government won't waste their tax dollars on social programs the same way they're wasting the tax dollars allocated for veteran's affairs, then it might just work

We have laws, do we not? Creating rules to control our baser natures is to appeal to our higher ones. We create systems of control to combat the tendencies you speak of, and a better job could be done.

Hey, you're all about control. Fuck you.

If you cannot make the right decision, the perhaps it should be made for you.

There will always be at least 3 classes of people;
Those who make the rules.
Those who enforce the rules.
Those who are subject to the rules.
Once people figure out which group they are in and that so long as they aren't in the bottom group they can do whatever they want. Corruption sets in. We have corruption here in the US (for god's sake we almost elected Hillary) but it's nothing compared to the socialist states.

If you are not willing to do it yourself, it still has to be done.

speak for yourself. shit's fucked, eh

less then 5 percent of the people here could define socialism, Let alone a sub genre of it like this.

People with two wildly differing conceptions what socialism means will just screech autisticly at one another.

As nice of a thought as it is, two facts of reality stand in the way of its success: incentivzation of society's best and brightest and finite resources.
Capitalism best addresses these issues. Not to sound cold, but all the problems socialism solve could be fixed with increased ambition of individuals inflicted by a lack of resources.

>/pol
Fuck off faget

are you really implying humans aren't self serving by nature? What's it like to live inside your own asshole?

I have computah

The few posters here who are intelligent and educated enough to discuss this in a reasonable manner don't really come here for serious discussions.

For example: Go fuck yourself, you nigger faggot!

who gets to decide which is the right decision for me? for you? what if what i want is diametrically opposite to what /they/ want?
what if i'm aware of the right decision for me, yet /they/ insist otherwise? what then?

if you can assuage the american people of these fears, instead of condescendingly telling them that their opinions are invalid, ergo, accept socialism, then maybe the us will be able to stop treating socialism as public enemy number one

It probably could work if everybody was on board with it but there would be too many people tied to their rhetoric pole for it to work properly.

You're addressing a fundamental flaw in the ideology.

What cost could you put on yours and your neighbor's autonomy? Is your liberty worth a safety net when you could build your own?

I am saying to some degree they are, but that is the lowliest and primitive point of our nature. Your language appears to imply that you feel such ill behavior should be celebrated or praised. It may have played it's part at one point, but we have come far enough as a species to know better. If not, then those that do need to...limit the free range of those who cannot excercise self limitation.

They did a study recently about how to connect with members of an opposing political stance.

The right wing were more likely to be swayed when they were told the cost benefit analysis of a left wing system.

The left wing were more likely to be swayed to right wing ideas when an appeal to social issues like the environment were addressed.

It will or we all will die sooner than we should.

Friend. Understand now that you are no better than a bipedal beast, standing on the shoulders on ancestors who figured the secrets of basic tools and language. We haven't evolved past self preservation and we never will. Trying to fight this will put you and anyone you have influence with in a world of hurt.

Absolute freedom is not something to be put on a pedestal. There are times when it is reponsibles to consider the needs and wants of the self, but not to the degree your tone implies.

What about a hyrid system where should you choose to you would have private support but should you not be able to the government would have supplemental support.

I mean the bureaucracy would probably get a smidge bigger but the freedom to choose wouldnt be completely lost.

Right but the taxes would get raised because some people would milk the system

Not if the right steps are taken to limit or quarantine those who would do the harm. As I said before, if you are incapable of making the right choice, then it may be permissable that the decision be made for you.

I stand by any school of thought which best protects my ability to create my own path and my neighbor to do the same.
Let the artist starve for their art and the tycoon bathe in their riches. We have choice. The world be dammned if we sign our soil or soul to any government.

Who dictates correct choice?
I'm not arguing laws which enforce a given individual's personal liberty, but are you willing to give your autonomy to the masses, trusting they know what you want and need more than you? Would you do this to your friends and family?

as a venezuelan, i can tell you, Socialism can't work ANYWHERE

But the taxes would be pennies on the dollar and could be offset by better demand on where it should be spent on.

This reminds me of the time I wasted an entire class period in American Government debating with my teacher that JFK's "Ask not what your contry can do for you, ask what you can do for your country" was socialist. She wasn't having it, but couldn't actually refute it. Before we knew it, the bell rang signaling the period was over and she hadn't gotten to talk about anything she had intended for that day because I was being a contrarian little shit. She asked me to stay after class for a minute and told me that if I agreed to keep my mouth shut she'd pass me with an 85 even if I didn't do any assignments, but if I ever interrupted her class again she'd fail me.
Good times.

no. have you not seen the people?

I see what you're saying but the system would have to be pretty heavy handed with the government support, like annualnor semi annual check ups by minders and then it would basically be a nation of bureaucracy

Should have demanded an A.
Stupid red faggot

I think a choice to do so should cost personal freedom but the choice to not do so would cost support and tax breaks.

Pick your poison so to speak.

socialism =/= democratic-socialism

Not a chance....
The problem is that eventually you run out of other people's money.
You can't have 47% put money into a pot and 100% take money out.
Plus innovation would plummet

Christ, you're fucking stupid.
I can't hold your hand anymore. Vote with your heart, queer. See you in the streets.

Entitlement is a matter of perspective. The same people that scream about the sense of entitlement exhibited by minorities themselves exhibit as sense of entitlement.

Simply put they feel entitled to what someone else is getting or what they deem someone else is getting through entitlement. They don't want anyone thinking they're entitled to what they themselves are entitled to.

It's the same attitude that portrays everyone is exceptional because of the country in which they live, or they're a hero because they simply choose to do a job, or they're a winner simply for participating, or they're a super patriot for wearing flag or parroting a talking head.

The USA has lost its sense of earning its way in the world and allowed itself to be bullshitted into believing it's the best without proving it. Both political parties have been guilty of propping up this ideal and there's no specific ideology that would really be best. A hybrid of multiple ideologies needs to get things back on track. You want to make America greater than it is, then work at rather than screaming at each other like a bunch of autistics in a room full of alarm clocks and dump the bullshit. Throw some skin in the game, run for office at any level, do some work instead of sitting around on your fat ass blaming everyone but yourself.

Canada is attached to us, so therefore they don't have to spend large on a military or defense.

>Stupid red
I was arguing against the socialist implication of JFK's speech, actually. In a democracy the government should exist to serve the will of the people, not the other way around. I still took the quizzes tests because they were always easy, but I'd write both the answer I knew the textbook wanted (in the blank provided) and my actual answer to the question (in the margin). I know I passed, and I want to say my test scores got me an A but this was in 1994 so I don't have my report card anymore to confirm it.

Socialism does work in america.

Fuck off conservative cuck. Hitler brought a country from poverty to a huge powerhouse nation. And had the strongest army in the world that it needed all the toughest countries in yhe world to take him down. Hitler is better than any U.S. president in history.

No it wouldnt work. Now fuck off

nice bait

yeah lets have a system that relies on taxes work when we have how many niggers and spics?

"You're all equally worthless!"

>in toubled times
>toubled

>supporting sanctions against your own country
That defeatist, self-loathing attitude is never going to get non-believers on board with your ideas, faggot. Sounds like the type of white person who would tell all his white friends "I totally belive in reparations" then if that got passed, when the bill comes you'd be complaining that you mean't RICH white people.

The US already has socialized health care. It's the thing we spend the most money on. We could expand it to everyone withou the minorest of buttfucks to the economy. We could also spend far less on our military--unless the financial payoffs other countries give us for our military support make it to the people and not the MI-complex and private industries.

But we should also get rid of social security and harshly disincentize welfare and unemployment. People should have to work for their taxpayer money. And we should also simplify the tax code while we're at it--not some bullshit flat tax, but something far less convuluted. And upper bracket tax rates should be spiked hard if those billions aren't being dumped back into the economy in a way that benefits the country.

All of these things are doable, but the people in power who would get dicked over because of these things pay off politicians so that they don't do them. We're going to have to start chopping heads if we want REAL progress, but even our poorest assholes have smart phones and free govt money and religion and their favorite TV shows and other bullshit distractions where that won't happen...yet.

Democratic socialism, defined as "Govt. owns all business and decides how money should be spent" Can not work in the long term in any country. This has been proven many times.

However, "social democracy" Which is defined as having a regulated but strong free market with socialist domestic policy could absolutely work in the US, and any developed country for that matter. (look at Britain, Canada, etc)

The real point is choice. Americans hate giving up their freedom, they hate taxes, and many have a deep distrust for social programs. (believing that people leech from the system, which happens, but the systems are still a good investment)

Could it work in the US? Yes. Will it be voted into law in the US? Absolutely not, unless a major change of public opinion occurs.

Well, you could have incentives to engage with the government and work with it.

Tax breaks if you put more money into the social system.

Less government interference if you prove that you dont need the support as much.

Democracy works, but only until the lower class, which is always the largest group, learns that they can vote more benefits for themselves than they contribute to the nation.
Socialism is the end of democracy, and a system of government that will always fail in short order.

Samesies

The greatest trick the robber barons of our time ever pulled was convincing poor and middle class dickheads that social welfare programs for all would encroach on "muh freedumbz" and would be solely used by undesirables. All of us non-pieces of shit pay our fucking taxes. That gets spent on killing brown people with sky robots, taking care of some old piece of shit I'm not related to and don't even know, giving money to unwed teenaged shit for brains mothers, and other such faggotry I did not vote for, WOULD not vote for, and yet can't change. Where's the outrage about any of those things?

Yet the concept of "we all get to treat our illnesses without breaking the bank" is somehow this big demon that's coming down the pike. I'd rather we cut lots of other shit so we can have this very basic opportunity afforded to us by the money we invest into the system. If you want all of that other shit, fucking donate.

This.

A middle ground doesnt have to mean that everyone has to suffer.

It just means that the country has to recognize when it needs to have a self sustaining economic AND social policy that reinforces itself at no significant cost to anyone.

America needs to stop saying it's great and actually act like its house is in order.

woops, meant for

The unfortunate thing is most of our power now comes from the US *acting* like it's great. It has the weapons systems to back that up, but in actuality it's not great as far as how its citizens live their lives. But to say otherwise would damage trade agreements, power plays, etc. and our politicians have to play out the plot of the emperor's new clothes on a regular basis. This is why Trump is the perfect figurehead for how our country actually is--big, blustery tough talker who's gotten to a position of power from the work put in by previous generations who is now all about branding and brandishing.
