How does inheritance work in Westeros?

For example the Hornwood succession.

Lady Hornwood has no Hornwood blood but they mention marriage requests to become Lord of Hornwood and that's indeed what Ramsay becomes when he forces her to marry and then kills her.

They also mention how she's past childbearing age so that gives the implication that if she married and had a child that somehow that child would get the Hornwood name and inherit eventually even though that child would have no Hornwood blood.

They also make it seem as if Berena Hornwood who has Hornwood blood, and her children aren't automatically the heirs and shouldn't automatically get the lands.

So what the fuck?

Otherwise Robin Arryn could marry someone and if he dies she somehow gets the Vale instead of Harry.
