At this point, the US demanded surrender again, and again were denied. Finally, they threatened the use of nuclear weapons, and gave the Empire 3 days to surrender. You know how that ended.

Whether or not they should have allowed concessions or conditional surrender is irrelevant to the question of whether the US made the right call in using atomic weapons, because the reality of the situation at the time was that unconditional surrender was the only outcome the Allied forces were willing to accept. The Allies were certainly not going to allow Japan to remain armed or the emperor to remain in charge, and the Japanese were certainly not going to conceded to those demands voluntarily.

And there were only two realistic ways for the Allied forces to ensure an unconditional surrender - a show of force or military occupation.
