Hey guys, I would love a minute of your time. My friend has been making beats for a while now and has moved on towards rapping under the name Pilot Trace and he's doing surprisingly well considering the short amount of time he's been at it. But, we do have a problem, and it's the same problem every aspiring artist faces in the beginning and that is his notoriety at the moment. He doesn't have the biggest following, and because of this most of his music goes unheard. He creates the beats himself most of the time and he loves to hear constructive criticism in order to better his music and style. I would greatly appreciate it if you guys could give a listen to his newest song, Third Iris on soundcloud. Link here: soundcloud.com

Mixing feedback badly needed. Can I get any fresh ears to tell me what the track needs in terms of mixing? Anything too loud, too low?

I'm not here just to post a link and get views, there should be standards for people to review other people's work. So working my way up I'll be making quick paragraph reviews about the work posted. It worked well the last time so hopefully this will be the same.
Forming a new band soon.

>lo-fi alt. rock, that bass though
The horn section at the start is a bit too robotic, like you just downloaded a soundfont online and didn't edit the sustain and attack options making it sound like a 90's MIDI track. The reverb does sound nice though, subtle enough to convey depth.
I guess this goes into Soundcloud territory so I won't be long: While you do have confidence your lyrics makes me want to listen to Passanger on Shit with the volume at 100% (but that's the point if you open your track with being a 'I'm so cringey' production). They aren't even funny, it's middle school humor.
The beat is very stale and minimal. Nothing new added to the trap genre at all (but I can guess the focus is more on the lyrics about the rapper's dick). The bells and alien type FX are the only things interesting in the track and it isn't even there for long.
3/10, It's a song with some small effort being put on it, so that's why it doesn't rank lower.
The master seems to be slightly skewed to the right pan, I don't know if this was intentional or a mistake but it doesn't really add anything to the song.
I do like the drums in this part as well as the bass, it definitely reminds me of a soft version of post rock (which isn't bad). The vocals are inaudible, I cannot hear what the guy is singing due to the loud instruments. Do you use any separate recordings/mics for your vocals? It seems to me you only have one microphone for the entire band which can lead to some instruments muffling others. Due to that I can't really comment on the lyrics.
I do like the little pauses with the guitar strums, the add a bit of character and interesting rhythms to the track. I also like the climax of the song which really rounds off the song with a good bit of energy.
7/10 Potential musically, but you really need to utilize your more interesting sounds and to really work hard on your mixing/mastering skills.
Is any of this directed towards coroparty?
We literally recorded it with my phone, we didn't have any actual recording equipment at the time. Thanks for listening!
Reviewing Barn House Blues:
Pretty awful sounding violin solo that sounds like it was recorded on a Nokia 208 in a bathroom. The guitar is all over the place trying to create a melody with itself as the violin eases in and out as if trying to murder the guitarist.
The nasaly muffled vocals remind me of the soundtrack to games such as The Neverhood or Skullmonkeys (except with all the charm and humor murdered by the violin). You can hear him coughing up blood in the background trying desperately to sing under the immense pain of the knife slowly twisting under his ribs.
When the vocalist dies these distorted cymbals come crashing in with a band of murderous percussion trying to play to the beat. At around 2:30 something resembling a beat finally is played, a welcome normality in the chaos that is this track. The guitar is played decently over the loud, rumbling drums as the track slowly winds down and ends with the distant war cry of that fucking violin.
Much like this review the song doesn't go in any meaningful direction. It is either genius or madness but judging by the very smug teen hiding in a green bin I would rather think of it as pure, distilled insanity.
5/10, one word: STRUCTURE
I thought he wrote various posts about different people. Not only im untalented, even stupid!
No, just the track listed. Why do you ask?
You're welcome, try investing in either new microphones or record your instruments separately and then stitch them together with an audio editor.
Uh yeah, the way we wrote the song was counting in and just playing. No structure intended or expected.
It still sounds really bad without some sort of structure or focus. It's very jarring, for the vast majority of people, to be hearing a squeaky violin creeping up beside a calm guitar and some insane percussion.
One more and then I'm having a shower but for now I'm reviewing beyond the evergreens(fancy title):
Eargasm from the moment I hit play: I got shivers from the opening note of this song (which hasn't happen to me in a long while). This song (musically) sounds fucking awesome!
The ambient progression as the bass slowly builds up and distorts is very nice as snares bring the song into its first hook.
The one complaint I have is that not only is the singing style not suited for this type of song but it seems to be a bit out of sync. It ruins the enjoyment and energy I had for the song at the start as I am reminded that either one person, or a small team, made this in their spare time. Lyrically, the words sung are professionally written which makes me wonder why such a jaded vocalist was chosen.
7.5/10 With the cool electric guitar riff at the end and the percussion you definitely have a killer ass instrumental on your hands but the vocals do weigh it down a bit from me fully enjoying the track.
Forgot to say that I liked the track on Soundcloud.
This is great. I love the detuned sound
