what's this movie like?

Not exactly the same, but you can check out Dust Devil by the same director.

Steel Dawn

Circtuitry Man

really cool its a cyberpunk cult classic i ordered a bluray version because most torrents are garbage for it

thanks guys, have you seen neon city?

Oh, I'm a big fan of all of Richard Stanley's stuff (all two of his movies) so I think I might be able to help.

David Cronenberg
>Scanners
>Videodrome
Dario Argento
>Suspiria
>The Bird With the Crystal Plumage
>Deep Red
Derek Jarman
>Jubilee
Terry Gilliam
>Brazil
Brian De Palma
>The Fury
>Body Double
>Blow Out
>Phantom of the Paradise (EXTREMELY HIGH RECOMMENDATION!)
Ken Russel
>Altered States
Shinya Tsukamoto
>Tetsuo the Iron Man
Christian Duguay
>Screamers

Funny, I just learned then by looking up Duguay that he directed the TV sequels to Scanners. I never knew that but I always Scanners with Screamers. It must have rubbed off on him.

And I realize my recommendations got a bit out of hand, but I at least think I came close to exhausting all the inspirations and peers of Hardware that I know of.

it's like an old Ministry music video

Since Carl McCoy is in it shouldn't that be like a Nephilim video or, Nefilim even?

THIS IS WHAT YOU WANT
THIS IS WHAT YOU GET

THIS IS WHAT YOU WANT
THIS IS WHAT YOU GET

it's based on a strip from 2000AD.

It was blatant plagiarism.
2000AD was just a shambles at the time and they forgot to sue.

>Hardware thread

Fuck yes. Such a bizarre gem with some great style. I've introduced a lot of friends to it and it looks fantastic on blu ray.

I never watched all of Dust Devil actually, I should get around to that. I wish Richard Stanley made more flicks instead of going crazy from all the Dr. Moreau bullshit.

I was gonna say: doesn't this movie technically exist in the same universe as Dredd?

>going crazy from all the Dr. Moreau bullshit
SO it was Richard Stanley that got crazy and had to be laid off from filming and went into the woods? That's a waste of a good director if you ask me.

Technically no, artistically yes.

It's a damn shame.

He's made some documentaries and such (included as extras on the Hardware blu ray and some of the Dust Devil releases) but in Hollywood if shit goes wrong you get the blame and are blacklisted if you're seen stirring up trouble, so it's hard to get back into that circle. Plus his previous films didn't do a massive amount of business so the studios don't want to take the risk.

Wish he'd do some more indie films or something though, I'm not sure why he never did more features. Hardware might not have been the most original movie around, but it had an unconventional style and was a bit risky, which is what we need now in theatrical films.

Hardware wouldn't even be a risk to make to any sane studio. Richard Stanley could work with Robert Rodriguez tier budgets if not lower and produce something people would want to see.

Stanley claims in his commentary track that he had access to approximately $100 000 to make Hardware. What sounds saner to you? 1000 Hardware-tier productions, or a Ghostbusters reboot starring Melissa McCarthy?

Hey, I agree with you, I've been preaching this for years. I wish more movies would flop faster so Hollywood can end this era of insanely inflated big budget tentpoles and go back to churning out a variety of projects with less financial risk instead.

Was Hardware really 100k? I thought it was more like 2-3 million from what I remember. Even that was very impressive.

Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau

It is a story about Hardware's director I think.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Death Machine yet. Close in tone to Hardware and directed by Stephen Norrington who did Blade. Killer robot, Brad Dourif and the whole shebang

This sounds like a good one to check out, cheers.

In the commentary Stanley seems surprised when he hears what the budget is estimated to be now. The bigger numbers probably include rights to the music and marketing. He says that in terms of money that he had direct access to during production it couldn't have been much more than $100 000 if I remember yet.

The story behind his Island of Dr Moreau is tragic. He was first going to cast Bruce Willis and Marlond Brando, but Willis dropped out due to a divorce and Brando's daughter committed suicide, devastating him. Willis was replaced with Val Kilmer, who was late and uncooperative due to his own divorce while Brando was AWOL. All this followed by awful weather left the production with no chance of starting smoothly.

Of course all that the people behind the money saw was that production didn't start smoothly, so Stanley was out on his ass and the movie was doomed.

You won't be sorry dubs bro

oh here we go OH HERE WE GO

might as well try too

remember to watch the final cut of Dust Devil it's the best version

Oh boy, uh do we have doubles up here

I'm even more impressed by Hardware now then that I know it cost so low. Thanks for the trivia.

All our dubs confirms, Hardware is the shit.

not sure if it's been officially announced yet but he's working on a new movie with Elijah Wood's company Spectrevision

...

Wood also producing a new movie for Panos Cosmatoes aka the guy who did Beyond The Black Rainbow

If this is true then I'm keen as hell.

If this is accurate then you've just made my year. Good science-fiction is so hard to come by and I've always considered it a great shame that Cosmatos and Stanley weren't producing new work. There are really no words for how happy I am to hear this.

I just checked and Spectrevision are also the ones behind the Belladonna of Sadness re-release. These guys are almost too good to be true.

Oooh boy, this is going to be good.

Cheers for the source.

>Colour Out of Space
That's an idea so crazy I can see it working perfectly.
