Hope we can talk about costume design here.
One character is going to be the female accomplice to my antagonist and a foil to the protagonist. Regarding costume design I was thinking combat boots or barefoot, jeans, a black bra, and an animal mask. Somewhat like pic related. The film takes place in the woods and the animal mask is essential. Should I throw in an open jacket or open cardigan? Or scrap the design completely?
Since it's a horror film I would like to incorporate sexuality in the character through costume design but terror through her actions. This would hopefully provide a nice contrast and character identity. I appreciate any feedback or ideas
Daniel Nguyen
Trying to get a film club started at my campus for aspiring writers, filmmakers, and niggas who just like movies.
We'll pick a movie of the week to discuss, watch shit together, collaborate and give feedback on each other's creationsb and just shoot the shit about movies and tv in general.
There's a whole pain in the ass process but I'm willing to go through it. It would be a nice way to meet people.
Ryan Gutierrez
what the fuck is this

A link to Discord. Discord is an awesome application, similar to Skype. But better imo.
Robert Turner
What's unlikely inspirations have you guys experienced lately?
An episode of Nathan for You, S3E1 (the one about the local electronics store vs. Best Buy), gave me an idea of a potential conflict for one of the ideas I'm developing. Another one, my big budget dream project, was inspired by an obscure rap album
Justin Nelson
>I would like to incorporate sexuality in the character through costume design but terror through her actions. Why exactly? And I would throw in a jacket or something, your design sounds painfully generic.
Connor Gray
Well, that's cool, I guess.
Jason Stewart
Dude sounds good go for it , you'll get tons of artsy bitches
Tyler Murphy
I'm not even in it for the bitches. I want people's feedback on my work, to give feedback on other people's, and to collaborate on shit.
Camden Hernandez
I feel kinda thankful I took drama class for my last year in highschool. Now I have tons of drama friends that love to act and will do any role. The only problem is they always want to be the lead
Jaxson Collins
...Oh yeah that too
Haha but yeah I think it will bring in a lot of different types of people to give rounded feedback
Camden Young
>Why exactly? >This would hopefully provide a nice contrast and character identity. a.k.a. I have no idea how to actually write a non-speaking character so costume design and actions are the only things I can think to work with
>And I would throw in a jacket or something Thanks for the feedback, I'll definitely try out different jackets in test shooting
Jayden Morris
i hate that shit
Jeremiah Cox
I-I just want,.... famous people to acknowledge something that I've done. They don't have to fucking worship me or give me money. Does that make sense? Am I a faggot now?
Anthony Brooks
yeah because first of all you care what people think you faggot
Nicholas Martinez
self-esteem issues.
Isaac Cox
>being inspired good joke
Alexander Jones
Plus they always want me to write parts for them in anything. Doesn't matter on the story they want a special part for them
Brandon Thomas
tell them to fuck off you're the writer/creator
Austin Hill
I always just tell them I'm saving them for a better script. They are my friends after all
Hunter Reyes
Do you guys ever film in public locations? I'm trying to find a way to do it so I have more options for locations. Are bowling alleys easy ton film In ?
Kevin Scott
At least you have friends with acting experience. All my friends are just fucking drones. If I ever need them to act, I'd have to make a movie about neets. Who the hell is going to watch a movie about neets????
Landon Roberts
Haha that's exactly why I made friends with them in the first place. My squad that I've had since middle school are all fat Nerds who play hearthstone and league of Legends
Luke Lopez
Shoot anywhere you want. >guerrilla film making son!
Matthew Nguyen
Well I do have ONE friend, who was an extra in a bunch of stuff. She has some acting experience. Maybe I'll call her up if I have something she might be suited for. Until then, I shall crack my knuckles and whip out from rough drafts.
Take care lads.
Joseph Hill
>tfw in the process of severing friendship with old highschool friends because they do nothing and have no ambitions except work, smoke weed and play video games i'm so lonely
Lincoln Peterson
guerilla i went through that
Gabriel Young
Heres a trick I've used. I go to a fast food place with a drive through right after the local highschool gets out. So the line is long and I have plenty of time to shoot my scene in the car with the drive through/fast food joint as a location. Plus I use it to get food for the cast. Always pretty funny when it's two characters and they order 10 burgers.
Isaac Reed
samefag here
one of them wanted to be a screenwriter but could never finish anything he made.
Brandon Sanchez
I ditched all my highschool friends once I hit grade 11. They were incredibly toxic.
>I just want people with a good-heart. Why is that so fucking hard???
It's not like they HAVE to have insane ambitions or crazy hobbies to win me over.
Anthony King
Sounds to me like you haven't thought this out at all. What are we going to assume about her identity by her being shirtless? You just wanna see some titties.
In general, getting song rights is a pain It's no different if the composer is alive or dead The rights to a song can be held often by as many as 3 separate entities that you need to get permission from
Him being dead just means he isn't one of them
Matthew White
How would I track down the people who have the rights to "Rhodesians Never Die" then?
Brandon Lewis
Fuck if I know Buy the cd and email the people who are copyrighted on it. If you can't find them, just email the recording company
Starting with the record label is always a good bet
Jose Gomez
A boy falls in love with a girl.
Unable to confess, he is gifted by a deus ex machina with the girl's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on him as well.
But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn't exist in this universe at all. She is the girl's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.
Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of LOVE.
I'm not able to make anything at the moment because of certain factors (lack of money and ideas). Would revisiting movies I disliked and re-editing them be good practice? Has anyone else here done that?
Isaiah Watson
I'm giving up on my Sundance Ignite project. Too little of a plan, too big of a headache.
Instead I'm gonna focus on volunteering at a bigger film festival this year and learn from others.
Since fall's coming up, I'm also gonna do a horror short. It's a genre I think would be fun to play with, and something I've wanted to do for years. I'm gonna try actually planning it this time.
Jordan White
Jason Eisner (Hobo With A Shotgun) and Emmanuel Lubezki (DP on Birdman and The Revenant) have both liked things I've posted on Instagram.
Even little shit like that boosts my ego a bit.
Alexander Wood
Good for you, rushing is never worth the effort.
Link us?
Owen Turner
People do that. Do it.
Austin Butler
most colleges have it so clubs can't screen films or anything without special permissions because of copyright issues, you might not be allowed to do that
Isaiah Myers
Alright, maybe I'll start with Vertigo, though I'm not really sure what I could do with it. Any software you'd recommend? I only have Windows Movie Maker.
Luis Price
premiere
Landon Scott
I mean one was something stupid that I tagged Hobo With A Shotgun with, the other was some really cool pic of Japan I thought was pretty aesthetic. You can't even prove they liked it on desktop (though you can on mobile).
Are you sure about this? Because my school had several events where they've played movies.
Daniel Ramirez
Yeah, my school does too. They get the rights from the companies. We screen movies usually the weekend before they come out on DVD, my friend was one of the a/v techs so he had to pick up the watermarked DVD from the companies sometimes. As far as I know this is how it is for pretty much any college but I could be wrong
Colton Nguyen
What I basically planned on would be like "TDKR is the movie of the week" and we meet to discuss it, watching the movie together at someone's place would be optional
Ethan Howard
Ah, yeah you can probably swing that if you are a little hush hush about it
Dylan Nelson
I just want to shoot the shit about movies. Why does it have to be so hard? :(
Wyatt Jenkins
Can we talk about character design? Where do you guys references/inspiration for hairstyles? Outfits?
Logan Evans
because schools can't support "piracy" and whatnot, starting a club is no fun. you also have to have a treasurer and shit and meet a bunch of other requirements, I hated running the club I was in charge of. It's awful
Just listening to a mixture of songs from Slowdive, Sharon Van Etten and Scala & Kolacny Brothers as I write my script about a news station and happiness/depression.
Ian Price
Me? When I'm writing characters I think about who they are first and foremost. What they wear, or their hairstyle is only secondary to their character, and something that I don't preoccupy myself with to a great extent. In my scripts I usually don't put too much thought into their description other than the important bits, like age, size, and anything that stands out about them (that can be a tattoo, a scar, things of that nature). Things like hairstyles are basically like superfluous elements that should have no bearing on the story you're trying to tell. Outfits will always be in the same fashion of the time the piece is set in (as in you won't have a guy with a full leather suit in a 50's set noir film, though you could do that if you wish obviously).
For fantasy or science-fiction work it all comes down to imagination. Take things that aren't usually associated with the genre and appropriate them. Say your film is about a group of reverent monks of the future who go from plane to planet inseminating their seed, rather than their dogma, and have them adorned in transparent plastic robes that reveal their members in their utmost glory.
Cooper Hall
>Say your film is about a group of reverent monks of the future who go from plane to planet inseminating their seed, rather than their dogma, and have them adorned in transparent plastic robes that reveal their members in their utmost glory. What would you do for a biker gang?
Isaac Thompson
> Say your film is about a group of reverent monks of the future who go from plane to planet inseminating their seed, rather than their dogma, and have them adorned in transparent plastic robes that reveal their members in their utmost glory.
hahaha u wot m8
Wyatt Bailey
have to check for permits. i did this but there was this instance where the security asked me to stop since i have to get the permission of the local building where i was shooting.
Kayden Anderson
>have to check for permits. i did this but there was this instance where the security asked me to stop since i have to get the permission of the local building where i was shooting. I rather just never make a movie then.
Henry Reyes
what you do is get a guy on lookout to make sure mallcops aren't in the vicinity
Noah Sanders
Indeed I have. Started and ran a ton of the /fmg/ and /swg/ threads, and still actively try to participate whenever possible.
I don't understand it either. Lubezki in particular baffles me.
Robert Ross
tbf that only happened to me in about 1 out of 5. you can pretty much shoot quietly most of the time. i got caught since i was lugging some equipment back then and we were taking space
Ryder Morales
Then how do I make friends
Julian Walker
What would y'all want to see video essays about in film? I feel like asking the FMG group would make more sense than asking baneposters
Caleb Sanders
Geez dude, just make one about Kubrick or Tarantino and stop fucking asking already. Made like 30 posts about this shit in the past few /fsg/s.
Like, not knocking you for doing it, I approve, but damn seems like you're all talk and no action at this point.
Lucas Rivera
Cinematography techniques, editing techniques, different acting styles.
communicating with actors would be a great fucking help to some of us
James Kelly
Submitting my first script to a contest. 105 bucks down the drain. Wish me luck lads,
Josiah Kelly
good luck, user.
Connor Murphy
>different acting styles. THIS!!! And more stuff about scriptwriting, symbolism, and homages.
Jacob James
You got to change that thinking man, because you'll never be satisfied.
It does make sense though, I'm more specific, I only want the praise of people who I respect. I'm very arrogant like that.
All the time. Gun and Run.
Private Property is harder, I've had a friend who would just walk into bars and stuff with a camera, not get permission and shoot a few shots and then run out. But I'm too much of a pussy for that. Plus getting kicked out of a place really drains the crew's resolve.
CONGRATULATIONS!! >my feature has a sub-plot about that exact same thing This is one of the best decisions you'll make. There are tonnes of wonderful people out there in the world who will invigorate you, so while you feel lonely now don't despair. You have you shown that you care about your future direction in life and are strong enough not to let other people's lifestyles weigh you down.
Where are you? Like what country. First step is to find out who the "publisher" is of the song.
In Australia you go to Apra.com.au and perform a search on the title.
Lubzeki... niiiiiice. Best I ever got was Barbariana from Kung Fury liked one of my things on Instagram. Oh and a legendary documentary filmmaker with the same name as a very famous American teen film director personally analyzed my masters film... and explained it better than I ever could
Cameron Jenkins
Has anyone ever advertised their own shit with a banner ad on Sup Forums? It sounds autistic as fuck, but I want to know.
Angel Edwards
that sounds pretty genius desu
Logan Brown
Depending on who your audience is this could work quite well. However I think not seeing anime or sex pillow ads might cause a backlash: you know how channers are about change.
Jeremiah Martin
go to a biker bar/watch walker texas ranger
Aiden Ortiz
>communicating with actors would be a great fucking help to some of us Not him. But fuck it, if that's what you guys need. I'll give it a whirl.
Actors love my directing.
I'll give you a basic break down of how to run a rehearsal. Techniques I find help an actor "find" the character.
Why that line doesn't feel/sound right, and what you can say to an actor to get them to do it right.
Just a question: would you guys want me to just give a general abstracted explanation of things you can do, or would you prefer a video where say, I take a scene from a famous film -- the script and break it down line by line as I would with an actor?
Evan Miller
latter would be easier to use as a reference
Dominic James
where the fuck do I find a biker bar? That wouldn't even be helpful, actually, I'm writing about teen bikers.
Thomas Adams
well fuck man sounds really gay i don't know what to tell ya
Jason Johnson
...
Evan Sanchez
Allright. Gonna do some shotlisting and scriptwriting over the next few hours for a different project, and then I'll write up and maybe film a little instructional video to slam on Youtube for you guys.
I'll start thinking of a scene to pick.
Any suggestions welcome, keep in mind for the purposes of a instructional exercise the more ambiguous and stand-alone the scene is, the better. Also short.
But better yet: tell me what issues or problems you often find when directing actors and I'll see if I can offer some techniques or solutions.
Jaxson Lee
Considering the fact I can barely come up with ideas, I should probably give up, right?
Nolan Perry
>tfw you crack a difficult scene/plot point in your script
Is there a better feeling?
Connor Robinson
>Submitting my first script to a contest. 105 bucks down the drain. >Wish me luck lads,
good luck m8
Thomas Johnson
you don't mean that
Grayson Rodriguez
Yes. Go out, live, come back to writing when you have an experience you want to write about.
Not him. But shut-up and hope for the best user. We're all rooting for you
