for, because i don't have to interact with people
For, because I'm an antisocial autist and hate interacting with people, even in the minimal way that's involved with paying for groceries.
depends. if there are no cute cashiers then im for it. if there is cutie to talk to then im against them.
Yeah but it replaces actual jobs
For and against.
When I've only got a few items, it's generally quicker than a normal checkout. If I've got a cart full of stuff, then going to a normal checkout is quicker.
That said, I feel that self checkouts should provide some kind of discount. I mean, you're doing some of the stores work for them....
Against because they are like black people and dont work.
i always use it. its good for me cuz i have social anxiety.
In general yes, but it only makes sense with self-scan. That's the real time saver. If the stores would stop dicking around and combine scan and payment from the mobile app, we'd finally have some jetsons shit going on.
Against.
1. The average person is slow and incompetent when checking themselves out.
2. The person or the machine will mess up, so then an employee has to come over and sort it out anyway.
In an ideal world, items that you picked up would just be automatically detected, and then you'd be charged when you walked out of the store. No checkout lanes at all.
No, they replace a service. I don't think anyone ever in the entire world had dreams of becoming a cashier. If I can do it with a machine, it's ok. The people who used to work as that can take the chance and do something better for their lives.
this is so funny hahahah

I like them they are easy to fool and steal from.
This guy is talking about amazons new grocery store
Actually in Switzerland you can take a scanning device that stores what you scan. You scan directly the article when you put them in your shopping cart. You just pay and give the scanner devide back ad the end.
They are fine.
Most places are short staffed as it is.. cutting hours into impossible conditions to meet demand. Auto-cash registers allow for better hours, less horrible work, and more pay for existing jobs.
>mfw I worked as a cashier in high school
That job let me buy a car and pay some of my college expenses.
If all of the jobs that unskilled teens can do get replaced, I'm not sure what they are supposed to do.
For it, they can help speed things along but I have noticed some folks are not smart enough to communicate with the robot race and so people cashiers will never be phased out
Against because they are statistically pretty inefficient.
they'll still need them for making shitty fast food
I love using them for small amounts of things, they are impractical for large amounts of goods because most shoppers are fucking retarded, wal-mart employee here
My first job was making carbide end mills. That's a high-precision manufacturing job. Requires about a year of training to be good.
I was making $14 an hour when I left, and the minimum was $9. I was 18, because you have to be, but still. Totally unskilled, but the company was willing to give me a shot because I put myself out there and proved I had the goods.
So glad I didn't get started with a shit job working for a soulless company who's making millions off the backs of poor people who could be contributing to their society.
Swissfag here (), can confirm. All large Swiss grocery chains have introduced the system and it works rather flawlessly. There are some minor issues such as having an employee confirm your age upon checkout if you want to buy alcohol or tobacco, or the occasional unreadable barcode. But other than that, it's fucking epic. Average waiting time during rush hour with self-scan/self-checkout: 2-3 mins vs. 7-10 at a normal cashier.
Logically they are better than normal cashiers because most stores I go into always have slow as fuck check out. But I'd much rather have real people hold those jobs because we're promoting the replacement of low level jobs with kiosks and that will get bad real soon. Imagine not having a single person be a cashier at anything where a kiosk could be put in, movie theaters, museums, clothes stores, etc. It just takes away a lot of entry level jobs. They should simply train the right people for the job who can actually do work at a good pace.
Sometimes they don't work. And I have to do more work by scanning my own stuff and bagging it instead of someone else. So I'd prefer a human doing it.
But that's the future buddy.
Eventually robots will do everything and we wont need jobs or money, the fruits of the machine's labor will be shared around the people.
on th eone hand they are good cos progress but on the other hand they ar ebad because less employment
all in all I feel ambivalant and confused so I just stick to shoplifting instead
In the long run this will be a good thing. Automation may seem really attractive to the capitalists now, and it may seem really frightening to workers now, but when automation takes over is when communism will finally be possible, and inevitable.
For, because sometime I steal half of the stuff. Where I live there are also self checkouts but rarely they search the costumers if they really scan all there shit.
Why would a shoplifter care about what's good or bad for society? If you're gonna be a criminal at least think like one.
Requesting more goblin fucktoys
there really isn't a way to watch 10 customers at once, but I personally don't even bother hassling a thief, its not like were allowed to beat some sense into them or anything
They have the potential to be good, but because the store will almost certainly NOT pass the savings on to you, it's just another way to offset the cost of operations to the customer.
Exactly. Got a buddy who works a register, and he always says if someone tries to rob him, unless they have a gun, he's gonna attack them with a mop. I've tried telling him that he's a retard and he should just pocket some of the cash for himself (no cameras), but ever since he got laid, his balls are like grapefruits.
Well when you consider the cost to purchase the machine and then the high cost of maintenance, it's only a little bit cheaper than employing a cashier
You must not understand supply and demand.
That can also be automated.
do u realize it takes a job to build that shit? prolly takes alot of time and is a job for someone else.
Catunday?
cute cat
I almost got fired for unintentionally chasing a cig thief out of our supermarket, felt like a dog after a squirrel, i'm 6'6 and the dude was probably 5ft and i kept on his ass the entire time, I really didn't mean nor care too either, but fuck it's annoying to be restricted by bullshit policies, i'd rather we just beat thiefs and hooligans like they do in other countries
Is it that expensive to maintain? What the fuck could go wrong with it?
>train the right people to work at good pace
That's the thing: For many of these services, manual labor just isn't fast enough. Let's take movie tickets for example. If you're an oldfag, remember how it was to reserve movie tickets?
>Call Movie theater or ticket hotline
>Wait 2-5mins to get through (good luck on a Saturday night)
>explain which movie you want to see and - if available - explain which seats you want to reserve
>get told the seats you want are unavailable and re-negotiate for seats
>get to the theater 30-45 mins before the movie starts to pick up tickets
>wait in line to get tickets
>wait in line to get into cinema
>enjoy movie
Compared to today:
>pick cinema, movie and seats and pay with credit card from the comfort of your toilet
>show up at cinema and wave barcode at the guy at the entrance
>enjoy movie
>You must not understand supply and demand
Because there will always be work for people to do. Society went from Agriculture to manufacturing to a service economy and now we are switching to a more socialist/service economy. Look at how many people make money without a real job. Kickstarter, Patron, Etsy. People will always find something.
reciepts jam, cheeky plastic innards break, plenty of programming issues that get constant slow updates nightly, people spilling shit literally into the machine
Nah fuck that. Then if I work in a store with no cameras, and I don't like your face, I'll just kick your ass and stuff some merchandise in your pockets before I call the cops.
jesus christ you self righteous piece of shit. You do know that there are an extremely limited number of your precious trade jobs out there right? Fucking christ, do you think every teen old enough to work dreams of being a cashier or busser or other unskilled employee? No you stupid fucking nigger.
I hope you drink battery acid before you go to bed tonight and fucking die.
Scales. Printers. Bill readers. At my store half.the time there is one closed for maintenance.
Unexpected item in the bagging area, please remove this item to continue
once we had one break the itsy bitsy piece of plastic that lets the printer know the paper is in position and it was down for a week
Actually that's not true. Trade jobs are in the highest demand right now. Because no one wants to get off their ass and work. Especially in the South where it's hot. Mechanics HVAC technicians sheet metal/iron workers.
For, I don't like the cashier saying "how's your day" or try to talk to me like BITCH YOU JUST SCAN STUFF WHO CARES HOW MY DAY WENT SHUT THE FUCK AND SCAN MY FOOD SO I CAN SO HOME AND CRY MYSELF TO SLEEP
> puts it in cart and doesn't pay
Depends on the wage structure of your country. Manual labor is expensive in some countries. In Switzerland a cashier makes 40-50k a year. You can man a 10-15 self-checkout station with 2 employees. At that rate you're saving upwards of 500k a year in labor costs. Initial purchase of a self-checkout ATM clocks in at 10-15k. Add 3-5k in service fees per year on top of that. You can use the ATM probably 5 years without any major upgrade costs. Feel free to do the math
We had this in UK for years.
Self checkouts are an easy way to pay when you are just dashing in and out.
Personally I prefer the human cashier because they're usually faster at it than I am
stop making my day better you beautiful person.
Kek, keep making excuses for not trying at all. The turnover rate at that shop was so high, I saw over 30 people get hired in less than a year.
Not every teen dreams of it, and I never implied that. They just have no ability to identify their strengths, and so they work a shithole job while they figure it out or pay a university to do it for them.
I applied for a job I was under-qualified for, I got a lucky interview, and showed them I could do the job.
You went for a job a literal monkey could do. You went safe. Good for you. Now keep seething over the fact that I didn't. :)
Fair enough. Didn't think about all the input devices besides the scanner.
Walmart is starting to roll that out.
>They just have no ability to identify their strengths
Can you just end your fucking life now? The world is better off without self entitled pieces of shit like you. Good god, you're fucking insufferable.
Kek, I love friendly bubbly cashiers. It's one of the few times someone is just nice to you for no reason. What pisses me off is the people who act like you're bothering them.
>If all of the jobs that unskilled teens can do get replaced, I'm not sure what they are supposed to do.
unskilled people dont "deserve" a job. If you literally have no skills, how would you earn a company profit? everyone with a job has some sort of skill
Amazon has a grocery store that already does that in Seattle
Another non-argument. Like I said, keep seething, faggot. I'll keep working better jobs than you.
you fuck the system over by putting different similar pricetags over the stuff you bought.
I agree. We are cutting out jobs for these things. So they have to up the cost yet no discounts when you don't use humans.
I'm against them. I believe in robots and automation but what will future workers do? Not everyone can work an office job. No shit not even joking. We will be like wall-e movie all of use 500lbs. Fast food will remove humans from taking orders, have robots cooking, so one person to work on them and make sure all is ok is what I see in 10 years from now.
Farmers will have their equipment do everything for them.
Women will not allow sexbots as it will make them useless then.
Cars should finally be driving themselves and teleporting should become the next big thing they work on.
VR will take us over and we will live most of our free life in it.
Skynet will become real and we will all be killed off.
Oh please, user. These people would run the opposite direction if they couldn't do their job standing still in an air-conditioned room.
"I have to bring the carts in again? But that means I'll be in the sun for 30 minutes... WAAAAH"
I can tell you what unskilled teen girls can do for money.
Those were so much fun as a kid
Sounds pretty awesome user
You won't have a job, but it sounds like you also wont need money since everything is provided by robots.
GG uneducated worker
>women will not allow sexbots
This might actually be true. I can totally see a world in which feminazis get a law passed that says creating a sex robot that could pass as human counts as rape.
At that point, I'll just start raping feminists.
Tell, us Quads-chan.
For. Im faster than most checkout tards and all my produce goes under cheap celery code 4071.
The Stop & Shop in my town had this and every week in the police log you'd see a report where someone scanned $100 of stuff but actually had $300 of food in their bags. I think they dropped the idea.
I used it and liked it.
kek
They have two people watching the checkouts at my store. Like employees who do nothing but watch people use the auto checkout. They could be running a register. Instead, they're literally standing around watching people do that job for them.
>Another non-argument.
Oh god. Stop. please. Look buddy, I'm imploring you, please, PLEASE, take your fucking life already. If you have a family, you might as well take theirs first, since I'm sure you tainted them with your fucking ubiquitously toxic arrogance. That, or you've broken them into perpetual misery anyways and they need to be put down. Either way, please become a family annihilator and then take your own life.
Shit sorry OP, forgot the purpose of this thread; they're okay. Not really for or against. I'll use them if it conveniences me.
you must be retarded
One supermarket chain in my area had them then got rid of them a few months later because people were ripping them off and keying in wrong item codes.
"ubiquitously toxic"
Right, I'm the arrogant one. Maybe Google a word before you misuse it to sound more intelligent than you really are. Keep projecting, and seething, bitch.
Against. Theyre super slow and if you have more than two bags youll need a clerk to come anyways
against because I don't get a discount for doing it myself. Why would I do the work a checker is to do for free, making the man free money, stupid self serve cucks
Damn, those are swiss checkout machines
Youre wrong. I work in sales. No one in their right mind wants to work in sales but like every other American, I need money to live. Taking away a "service" is still taking away an opprotunity for a person new to the work place to make a living.
Are you for real?
I've had to abandon a whole cart of groceries before because there were only qt cashiers and I didn't want to spill my spaghetti.
Self-checkout is a godsend for the freaks like me and this guy
Kek damn.
Kek at the brainlets that literally think this.
Grammar user here, "ubiquitously toxic" was used correctly. Maybe unconventionally, but correctly.
definitely for
restock the shop of course
love it, i dont want to make stupid fucking small talk with someone. i can do it faster my self. leave me alone.
so fucking against
muh fucking
>error, please wait for attendant
every fucking time
has literally never worked correctly for me
not even once
this guy gets it
Kek. No... no, it wasn't.
ubiquitous
adjective
1.
existing or being everywhere, especially at the same time; omnipresent:
Perhaps you're both thinking of the word "universally". "Universally toxic" would make perfect sense, unlike you pseudo-intellectuals.
>fruits of the machine's labor will be shared
Bubuttt the goverment said that when the machines took over all the low end jobs that there'd be free money for all. Shut up pa, I told you its like obamacare its all a sham.
Shit nigger, I remember when they said by the year 2000 people would all have jet cars. Yeah, right.
Store Stockers will soon be obsolete:
Witron system aims to fully automate shelf replenishment
May 26, 2009 | by James Bickers
If there is anything more frustrating to a customer than an empty shelf, perhaps it is tripping over the employee who is cutting open case boxes of products and trying to fill that shelf. Both headaches would become distant memories if the German logistics company Witron is successful with its new SRS, or Shelf Replenishment System.
The company's roots are deep in supply chain and inventory management — it counts supermarket giants like Kroger and Supervalu among its clients, for whom it develops and deploys automated warehouse picking solutions. Now, it is working to automate the "last mile" of the supply chain process: getting products from the back room onto the shelf.
"A lot of grocery stores are open 24 hours, so when do you really get to replenish the shelves?" asked Brian Sherman, business development manager for Witron. "Sometimes there are stock-outs during the day and you need to get people to replenish, and now you're in the way of the shoppers. We say, let machines do the replenishing, and do it from the backside."
I hate them.
I'm not paying the grocery store to do their work.
lets destroy or cars and bikes because it stole blacksmiths job , no one rides horses
is it that hard for you to interact with people?
or boys kappapride
A competent cashier is 10x faster and more efficient than a self checkout lane, and also provides fast bagging services.
If there's a problem with the unit, it's much faster for a person to be at the terminal to fix it than to wait for someone to notice that your self checkout lane is misbehaving.
Self-checkout lanes will not actually lower prices or wait times, because people will deliberately fail to scan items, resulting in increased theft and product shortages at about the same rate as the typical hourly wage of a cashier.
