FUCK you for reminding me about this movie, I couldn't suspend my disbelief enough to get any enjoyment out of it. Teachers at prestigious jazz schools don't act like that, """"double-time swing"""" doesn't mean turning into a fucking spastic and playing as fast as possible, your hands don't profusely bleed from chopping out, none of the three main drummers could play worth shit and the fact that they were all competing for the top ensemble makes me seriously doubt the credibility of their entire fucking school. People kept telling me "but it's such a good drama!!" but I couldn't get past the sheer amount of bullshit it threw at my face to enjoy any of the interactions between the characters, and it didn't help that the main character was an utter piece of shit that I couldn't relate to in the slightest

Don't fucking even, the drummers in the movie weren't just playing "pretty fucking fast," the teacher would give them a tempo and then no matter where it was at they'd just hit things as fast as possible.

third guy almost sounds it....hard to hear.....usually the hihat would be clicking on the cut / doubled notes - sounds like its on the beat in the clip - so that under cuts the feel. also no real swung doubles on the ride, a few snare-to-ride......so third guy might be technically correct - just not playing a vesion that has the typical jazz feel id expect from double and swung.

This is far from the worst "drumming" in the movie, I couldn't get over it and it ruined my whole experience. The "not my tempo" scene is especially atrocious, a drummer at one of the ""top jazz schools in the country"" can't play anywhere close to a director's given tempo. Each """"practicing"""" scene was horrid, and is about the time that I couldn't try to care anymore either.


Your question is valid, though. For a movie based entirely around music and DRUMMING, why couldn't they cast actors who could fucking drum, or at least train the actors they got so they wouldn't be completely embarrassing on screen? The level of sheer misunderstanding on how music school and jazz drumming works was so bad that as a drummer, I couldn't suspend my disbelief enough to enjoy the movie. There's a difference between letting some bullshit slide and completely shutting your brain off so the movie can make sense, if refusing to do the latter is autistic I guess I'm autistic

it's a shame too, I thought the camerawork in the movie was brilliant, and Simmons gave a great performance, but pretty much everything else I couldn't stand and I don't know shit about drumming.

It's a basically a sports movie. It's well made and entertaining but don't trick yourself into thinking it has anything to do with actual artistry or musicianship.

It was cool, like the acting was cool and the over the top drama, but I think people like OP didn't get it and hey thought it was supposed to be inspriring or a documentary/docudrama. It's caricature and over the top.

I guess, depends on the school. I go to a state school so they weed out the dummies by increasing difficulty. Cost avg across the board is a 60. Showed my exam to a friend who takes accounting at NYU and he thought we took two completely different classes.
