I used to think math rock was synonymous with twinkly emo guitar tap riffs. Then I learned otherwise. Unfortunately it's really hard to find good math rock bands when a lot of people seem to respond to any inquiry about the genre with a list of twinkly emo bands.

It's all good. Old revival classics like Snowing and Algernon constantly get pushed as math rock groups, and shit like Tiny Moving Parts is probably more commonly referred to as math rock than emo. I mean, the majority of the stuff in the math rock tag of my media player is actually emo because of the metadata other people applied to it. Personally I blame the TTNG brand of guitar wankery, who are certainly more of a math rock band than the other groups mentioned but not at all what I look for when trying to expand my knowledge of the genre, you know?
