No, the reason why everybody backs off from Israel is because they have nukes. That's also why Hillary and Israel support overthrowing Assad.
Nolan Richardson
Because then the people in it will fight to their death, like a trapped animal. It's better to leave them a path to retreat and hit them with airstrikes/artillery there when they try it.
Justin Jackson
Goddamn those Hillary emails are insightful. I think /sg/ should evaluate more of the information within.
Heres an excerpt I just found:
Finally, this sensitive contact advises that if the Israelis can use the Syrian situation to reestablish a degree of trust with the TNIO [Turkish National Intelligence] and the Turkish Army, Western governments should expect some covert help for secular Syrian rebels to be channeled to them from Israel via the Kurdish Regional Government in Iraq and Turkey. This source cautions that such a course of action will only develop if the TNIO and the military and political leaders of Turkey agree to this course of action. At the same time, a particularly sensitive individual added that Israeli Military Intelligence officers, in discussions with their military commanders and the Office of the Prime Minister, have raised the possibility of trying to open covert links to various rebel Syrian forces. This effort would be designed to collect intelligence and influence the policies of whatever successor government emerges in Damascus. At present they are advising that these contacts should be carried out in a very low key, clandestine level, with no direct military assistance or contact, which would work against the interests of both the Israeli government and the Free Syrian forces.
So Israeli weapon funneling to FSA to topple Assad was meant to go: Israel -> Iraqi/TURKISH Kurdistan (with the agreement of the TURKS themselves?!!) -> FSA

So the East Ghouta pocket is going to be close in a matter of days.
You guys think the SAA will transfer some soldiers from there to other fronts or are they going to keep the pressure and try to take more Damascus land from the """moderates"""?
Also, reports of huge SAA convoys heading towards Darayya and the Russian Kusnetzov carrier heading to Syrian coasts.

[Wikileaks Tel Aviv cable] Dagan said that Israel's interest is more in the impact the jihadis from, for example, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, will have once they return to their countries of origin. Although he predicts Egypt and Jordan will "do all right," Dagan said he is less confident that governments in Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Syria, and Sudan are sufficiently well-equipped to face down the domestic challenge these returning militants will pose. The combination of their military training and the absence of strong governments willing and able to confront these men could have a devastating impact on Israel by causing chaos in their home countries, he added.

[email forwarded to Hillary, originally from Alec Ross of Google Ideas] When Jared [Cohen] and I went to Syria, it was because we knew that Syrian society was growing increasingly young (population will double in 17 years) and digital and that this was going to create disruptions in society that we could potential harness for our purposes. In what is the 1st of what I predict will be many interesting cases in the future, this past week a campaign went viral on Facebook in Syria (even though Facebook is outlawed in Syria it is widely accessed through proxies) showing teachers in Syria abusing their pupils. Thousands of Syrians made public their support on Facebook (the fact that people made their identities known is notable) for the campaign to remove these teachers, and the Ministry of Education intervened and fired the teachers. This is the first known case of a successful social media campaign in Syria. More will come.
>this was going to create disruptions in society that we could potential harness for our purposes Keep in mind this was months before the first demonstrations in Homs/Daraa!!!

>Arabic Unverified reports: Muhammad Jawad Mughniyah was assassinated in Syria
Well, are they or aren't they? Israel asserts that Syria has transferred some of these old, liquid fueled ballistic missiles to Hizbullah to drag around in the hills, fiddling with the dangerous fuel and oxidizers. What would be the point?
Hizbullah is already in possession of a large and effective collection of short and long range rocketry. Israel is an interested party in this matter. Are we to take their word for it? What does US intelligence say of this? This Hiatt editorial quoted Jeffrey Feltman a lot. Feltman's bias is clear. Why is he still at the State Department as Assistant Secretary for the Near East? Don't we need a new ambassador in Iceland?

"Sid" forwarding to Hillary comments by American expert on Syria David Lesch after his talk with the Syrian ambassador to the UK - CONFIDENTIAL. Very interesting perspective. From december 2011.
Returned from my trip to London yesterday. I met with the Syrian ambassador to UK, Sarni Khiyami, but I was not able to meet with Asma's father. Sami is a very interesting person. He is secular Sunni, very straightforward and forthright (for a Syrian official), and not a member of the. Beth party. He was pretty frank with me, and I got the impression he believes he and his government could be on their way out, so UNCLASSIFIED U.S. Department of State Case No. F-2014-20439 Doc No. C05789930 Date: 01/07/2016 no harm in telling it like it is. He was critical of Bashar al-Asad, although he still supports him as the best alternative, and he was incredibly critical of, even dismissive, of the security services, who he essentially said were too stupid to do anything right. I asked him if he could tell President Obama or Secretary Clinton one thing, what would it be? His response was interesting. He said that he would vigorously ask the US to stop supporting groups such as the Syrian National Council bic they have very little legitimacy or popularity in Syria. He strongly recommended showing outward support for the serious and respected Syrian opposition elements in Syria itself, people such as Michel Kilo, Riyad Seif, Louay Hussein, etc. In his view, these are people of substance who have been both jailed and part of the government apparatus, so they are generally respected in both circles (govt and populace). They are the only ones who can lead the country through a transition period toward a more democratic system. Of course, he recognized, as I told him, the difficulty in getting Syrian govt support for this.
># Syria | # Hzb_allah terrorist admits killing Mohammed Jawad Mughniyah during the battles with the rebels.
Caleb Clark
and continued..
Bashar tried half-heartedly in the summer to do this through a national dialogue, but it did not go anywhere (and as Sami told me, the govt did not handle it very well). It might be that the govt might be more amenable to such an approach now b/c of growing difficulties. Sami said that it would not eliminate all of the opposition, since there are many wedded to the fall of the regime no matter what, but that it would draw enough support to isolate the radicals, who would whither away eventually, and create a critical mass to force the regime to follow through (especially with regional and international pressure holding its feet to the fire) and transition toward sharing power. Although it may be a bit self-serving, I happen to agree with him. The SNC and other opposition groups have very little if any traction inside Syria. Need to get guys like Kilo and Seif and the Local Coordination Committees in Syria on the same page with some sort of govt sanction, in combination with an end to violence. I think it is the only way this doesn't end up in a bloody civil war. Not easy to say the least, first and foremost b/c you have to get Bashar and his cronies to go along with it--tough sell. In addition, Syrian opposition elements in the country may not go with it. It may be past the point of no return. He also added one more request: get the Qataris to stop causing so much trouble in Syria in a way that is leading toward militarization of the crisis. He said he would make a formal request to Bashar for me to see him within the next month or so. Yale University Press has asked me to write a very quick 1 0 0 -1 page book on Syria and the Arab spring and Bashar al-Asad, with the final draft due in April, so it is under this pretext that I would be going. Not holding my breath on this, although Bashar seems more willing to talk to people now.
