The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. In my opinion, season 1 of Rick and Morty was the greatest season ever because Rick and Morty's dumb writers weren't sucking the dicks of the idiots at Reddit and Tumblr, who force Rick and Morty jokes to the point of exhaustion. Pickle Rick was, is, and always will be a terrible forced meme that was dead the moment that episode aired.
I get the subtle jokes, and most of them are pretty funny, but I hate what the writers have done to the show. The show used to be about a mad scientist and a stupid kid. Now it's just an edgy faglord with Original Character (do not steal) level overpower, and an equally as dumb kid that now has wayyy more complexity than he ever should have.

Too much complexity of a character makes it extremely hard to write them consistently. Watch the pilot episode again and look at how Rick and Morty interact. Even though they are reasonably simple characters, they share a wonderful duality that makes their interactions hilarious. That's what drew me into watching the show, originally. Back then, people watched that show because it had a funny concept, the characters were lovable, and the whole thing was executed brilliantly. I guess nowadays, people just watch it to wank their egos just because they get all the jokes. Sad.

The merely understand the surface humor. Anyone can see a character such as Mr. Poopybutthole (Season 2, episode 4) or the Plutonions (from replacement dimension C-137) and get a mere chuckly. In order to truly understand the show you must have a deep understanding of various academic topics. Most people like to make "memes" about the philosophical aspect of the show but pay no regard to the other aspects such as atheism, marxism and global warming.

For example this great humorous scene: you might think at first glance this is just a simple anti-joke where the punchline is the missing punchline, but this is actually a joke about a famous tale told in the 1920s. It has to do with slavery and how black people had only one purpose to fulfill to their masters, and the show referencing this, makes it from a funny scene (to the non-intellectual viewers) to a brilliant masterpiece of humor (to viewers like me)
