Depending on the student general behavior I may take it easy on them in one way or another. I always value if the person is actually interested in what he/she learns, but that's rare.
I would give teachers more creative freedom with their lessons and make the hiring process much more stricter. Evalution should be different as well.

It really depends. If you find the field you are in interested (and or have beginnings of a good research), I'd say go for it.
It's not ABSOLUTELY required, but it will give you a LOT of freedom to choose to do what you want in your field.
