The law only exists as a result of our constitution, which was made while Ireland was extremely religious - in 2014 it was decided that a referendum would be held to remove the law but it has taken a backseat to other issues (e.g. gay marriage) as no one has been prosecuted for blasphemy
I figured that was why, but it's still insane that a first world country has blasphemy laws in 2017.

Its a stupid law that was only put in place in 2009 because blasphemy is in our constitution but wasn't a law till 2009. Still most judges don't even take cases about this and most people want of repealed which would lead to a referendum.
