How to get rid of a fetish Sup Forums?
cognitive behavioral therapy is the most effective treatment for paraphilias.
medications, specifically SSRIs, can be effective as well.
both in combination is probably the best way to go.

same poster again,
if it is causing you significant distress and/or social impairment, it would be classified as a paraphilic disorder. however, if it doesn't result in either, it's just a paraphilia and wouldn't warrant treatment.
this, you're stuck forever OP, you got a scat fetish or something?
It's a fetish for weight gain and shit like that
I'd never admit to having it to a therapist, so I probably couldn't get CBT from someone else. While it isn't terrible it does disgust me. Would feel a lot happier if I didn't have it.
I've had bad experiences in the past with SSRIs that I took for depression. Made me feel like absolute shit, they fucked up my attention span. I'm also concerned about other side effects (ironically including weight gain, I'm pretty fucking disgusted at the idea of gaining weight myself)
What do? Also ty for the post
only 20% of people report weight gain on SSRIs. i understand the uncomfortable side-effects, though.
what were you taking, and how long were you taking them for? the side effects of Prozac and Zoloft are a bit more intense, while Escitalopram (Lexapro) is more mild. both do wear off after a couple of weeks, though.
in terms of CBT, therapists have heard a hell of a lot worse than a weight gain fetish, i promise you that. their entire purpose is to act as an objective, non-judgmental force to help you learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. if you ever encounter a therapist that you feel is passing judgment on you (and not just you projecting those feelings onto them), go find another, because that's a terrible therapist.
hope you find a treatment that works. the self-loathing and guilt that can come from paraphilic disorders can really take a toll on a person after a while.
Make it a reality or replace it with a different one
her name ??
I was on Prozac, 40mg a day for 8ish months. Eventually stopped because they stopped working for my depression/anxiety shit and fucked up with my studies. Not sure if I'd be willing to try something again. How do they work for paraphilic disorders? Are they taken in conjunction with therapy or do they just do the work on their own? If it's the latter then I noticed no real difference while on them. Just lost my libido overall
I understand they're trained to be non-judgemental, but it'd just make me feel so shameful just discussing it. Doesn't help that I've got social anxiety and such an extent I can hardly get my words out around people I don't know. What sort of things would they do in CBT? Is there anything I could do on my own alone?

the most effective treatments involve both medication and CBT, yes.
the administration of the therapy itself will vary from therapist to therapist, but ultimately the goal is retraining your erotic associations with weight gain
if Prozac eventually stopped working, you can always try switching to another SSRI. for those who develop psychopharmacological or metabolic tolerance to SSRIs, cycling between different ones can be effective. or you could try a TCA or MAOI
honestly, though, unless you're combining CBT with medication, it will be hit or miss. i would strongly encourage you to face your fears and build a relationship with a therapist. it's not as scary as it might seem.

out of interest, why doesn't this work with homosexuality?
also what is your advice for social anxiety and poor social skills?
and yes, if you're dedicated enough and do your research, you can engage in CBT on your own. research has shown that self-administered CBT can be nearly as effective as therapist-delivered, but it takes dedication, consistency, structure, self-control, and self-awareness
great question. homosexuality has far more of a biological basis than do typical abnormal behaviors and psychopathologies, specifically in terms of hormones and the endocrine system as a whole.
however, the main reason it doesn't work is because the subjective distress and social impairment associated with homosexuality is directly correlated with one's environment as well as cognitive processes that influence guilt or shame that are also generally a result of one's environment and/or upbringing.
in cases of homosexuality in which there is a general sense of social acceptance and understanding, very rarely is subjective distress present, and therefore it wouldn't be considered a disorder.
distinguishing between a disorder and a dysfunction and/or abnormal behavior is important. disorders cause significant subjective distress and/or social impairment as it pertains to an individual's culture. dysfunctions are disruptions of the natural biological and/or psychological processes that contribute to perception, well-being, homeostasis, and evolutionary purposes like reproduction
interpersonal therapy can be very effective for social anxiety and social skills as a whole. exposure therapy is also extremely effective, and both of these can be done without a therapist. again, it can be more difficult, but those are the two best starting points
how much of a biological basis does homosexuality have? what are thought to be the causes?
What about medications?
I had a therapist for some time but it didn't do anything to help me. I just completely close down when talking to other people and make a fool of myself. I slur my words, cannot think straight, and sometimes come out with fucking retarded responses. Alone though, if I talk to myself, it's far more eloquent.
there's still a lot of research to be done. genetics absolutely have an influence. monozygotic twins have higher rates of heritability than dyzygotic twins, which indicates that there are genetic factors at play
in terms of medications, SSRIs have been shown to be effective for all types of anxiety, and benzodiazapines like Xanax are very effective for most forms of anxiety as well, panic attacks especially
