People here were living in a wartime environment from times immemorial, starting from tatar conquests and up to WW2. That causes a great sense of self perseverance. So basically people do not ask for much, since there's no war going. We're exactly the type who are willing to give up liberty to gain security.
On the other hand, living in an eternal battlefield of Central Europe gave birth to other great traits of the nation. Since we were always rebuilding stuff, we got really good at it. We do not achieve much in engineering and we can do much better in a constrained resources setting than anyone else. And since people were always poor here, they are really happy to share and be hospitable. When you come as a guest to a ordinary Belarusian household, be ready to be embarrassed by their generosity and kindness to you.

I've visited a lot of countries and have friends in Western Europe and USA, and I can say that even those so-called first world countries have a lot of problems and are far from perfect. Yet most people there will eagerly tell you the things they like about their country, the things they proud of. If they bash something, there is likely an ad hoc reason - i.e. a particular problem which doesn't stop them from loving other things about their country.
Belarusians are the direct opposite. Ask them about Belarus and they will shout you how this country is shit. Don't ask them and they will still do that. Dare to argue with them and there will come more belarusians desperately trying to prove how it's the worst. It's become a national pride, a justification of their existance - the belief that they are suffering in the worst country in the world. And that nothing can be changed. Any successful initiative will be spat upon as an inevitable failure. Any evidence of success will be labled as fraud or soon-to-be disaster. The gloom of these people can be only mathced by the joy they are experiencing while bashing and insulting their own country.
I mean there are a lot of things I like about this country. It's quite, it's clean, it's peaceful here. No immigrants, no bizarre leftist discourse, ittle to no crime, rapidly developing IT infrastructure which is gives a lot of career opportunities. We have a heavily struggling economy and a leader who fails to understand that, alright, but there realistic options to overcome it and so many reasons to love the country despite the present problems. Yet belarusians refuse to do that, willingly abandon any hope and concentrate on shitting on themselves. And that is just depressing.
Why is Belarus so irrelevant? It is literally one of the last countries you ever hear about. But there are 10 million people and they are all white. HDI is comparable to Russia so it is not rich but not poor either.
