downloading safe stuff online and not being a retard

Windows Defender

Bitdefender Free
Microsoft Security Essentials/Windows Defender
Malwarebytes

Paid: Eset, Kapersky (inb4 Moscow botnet)

everything else goes into the trash

Malwarebytes premium is $20 and it is lifelong so worth it

Then get avast too for $20 for a year which gives firewall protection

Wew laddy

Despite what you might hear, having third party antivirus software isn't necessary as long as you aren't retarded. However, if you are retarded, I'd recommend Malwarebytes Pro.

iobit my nigga

I usually just open up a virtual box if i want to open a questionable link

Avast is fucking garbage. Full of bloat. It used to be good, but not anymore.

Avast bought out CCleaner and they fucking let it get infected with malware. Fuck Avast.

>that time when BitDefender was breached and they stored their users' passwords in plaintext

thehackernews.com/2015/07/bitdefender-hacked.html?m=1

good times

What you live in a shell? You don't click stuff? Everyone clicks the wrong shit by accident once in a while

Nope
youtu.be/WdNX9I_fMFM

Did not know this. What gives the best firewall protection then? From what I know malwarebytes doesn't have one

nope, you're just retarded

best antivirus is NO antivirus, i. e. your brain

>g-guys, it's okay
>they were just settings up for a bigger attack
>p-please don't leave; you're probably fine

I love Avast.

How do you do this? Compootr noob here

Seriously, it isn't that hard. You can check these things before you click them. If you're that fucking lazy and can't discern shit from not shit, then fine, get yourself some bloatware.

Well I did say Bitdefender Free, no point in stealing free accounts.

Common sense really or just use Windows Defender/MSSE

Why? Avast is bloated like I said. Their detection rates arent even that good either, Avira's is higher though it's just as bloated and naggy.

Kaspersky & McAfee

To be fair now a days you don't even have to click shit to get infected so this argument is retarded

/b really is underaged

ClamAV

>McAfee
Absolutely not. McAfee is among one of the worst AVs out there.

Norton is one of the worst too in case a nigga tries to shill that too.

That's... Not the point. You realize the gravity of people getting ahold of other peoples' passwords, don't you? Namely password reuse?

It was sarcasm. Re-read the part where I say "g-guys, it's okay".

Give some examples. How can you infect someone who isn't retarded, virtually?

do tell, user. am extremely curious as to why you have a virus and it absolutely WAS NOT because of the sketchy porn link you clicked on

sophos for me. the absolute least intrusive while getting the job done

>not other user
VMware

Download VirtualBox. Grab a Linux distro of your choice. Or Windows 10 if you're into that. Use it with VirtualBox.

>profit

why is Norton bad

I know it was a lame attempt at humor, but yeah password re-use is stupid but hopefully Bitdefender learned their lesson about not storing people's shit in plaintext.

Well like Ccleaner being infected recently.

They bundled a shit load of bullshit with their AV and it was notoriously difficult to uninstall their AV. I remember you had to download a tool just to get rid of their shit. They also didn't have that great of detection rates for whatever they hell they were asking you to pay.

>CCleaner
Then how would an antivirus help you there either? It clearly didn't matter that people had antivirus software, since nobody knew for a while.

Install a good HOSTS file and Ad Blocker. Windows Defender is more than adequate unless you're a moron that installs shit from dodgy places.

this

I just use windows defender and don't download dumb shit.

I didn't say an AV would help, it seemed to me like you implied how would someone who's computer smart get infected without clicking on random links, and I gave an example.

Legit software can get infected, even open source software. I remember the Transmission client had malware, though that was an issue with the hoster getting hacked, not really the devs adding malware. And that was on OSX too.

People still use anti viruses?
What the fuck are you downloading, more RAM?

Antivirus is a scam.

Quints

Yes the average joe needs an AV because people are retarded when it comes to computers.

askleo.com/can-really-get-malware-just-looking-email/

Just fucking sad, I bet they don't dust out their computers either

What are you doing, reading all the spam too?
I only get emails from things i've actually signed up for

As for the bit about open source "getting infected", that's a matter of user error. You can look through the files and compile them yourself, just to be sure that everything is legit. That's the beauty of open source. If you can't recognize malicious code, then that's just too fucking bad; because there's nothing more trustworthy than literally looking at the instructions for your software to carry out.

Faggot.

That's you, consider all the idiots at companies who aren't as smart and know what to look for. Hacks and shit in companies start at phishing attempts. Isn't that how the Russian hacking scandal happened?

>reading anything that isn't from a known/trusted sender

Once again, your fucking problem.

witnessed

nice dubs

You can get a virus just by viewing an infested site.

How many people audit open source software? Do you audit every single code from all open source software and then compile it everytime there's an update?

You just trust and hope the provider of the software doesn't do anything shady in their prebuilt releases and hope they do everything right security wise.

Malwarebytes, only works when you need it to work, free and effective

i do that whole life without any antivirus installed and i never have any viruses or malware
i have no idea how some idiots destroy pcs in like 30mins of using

You'd be surprised, that's the reason it's open source, for people other than the developer to make the software better

This. The best antivirus is good ol' fashion common sense. I havent had an antivirus installed on my computer in years and I have no problems at all

True, a lot of Linux users compile their own software, though I doubt most of them audit the code, as it is a long and grueling task. People get paid for that.

But since this is an AV recommendation thread, I doubt most of the posters here compile their own shit and know how to read the code.

I use Avira, and never have had issues with viruses, of course, i always frequent the same websites... so i guess i'm not that risky of a browser.

Same. Running Windows 7 on a computer I built 3 years ago.

antivirus companies are the ones who create virus in the first place so you have to use them.

the best antivirus is common sense

...

Free: avira with the free malwarebytes scanner as baseline. For an already infected machine use hitman pro, malwarebytes antirootkit, and malwarebytes antimalware scanner.
Paid: Bitdefender
Avoid/never use: kaspersky, avast, McAfee, Norton.

Avira is Avast tier. Full of unecessary bloat.

i'm using a Mac btw

Common sense then, Macs dont get that much malware anyway,

Lots of bloat and some adverts but the free real time protection is nice. I've purposefully infected machines and watched as a paid Avast subscription picked up nothing. Free Avira blocked all of the same infections from even taking place.

I still wouldnt use it. I just want a damn AV with no extra crap

Well malwarebytes fits that category but the free-version doesn't have scheduled scans or real time protection. You'd just have to use common sense and manually initiate scans.

Comodo Dragon

Everything thats trying to communicate online comes up with popups for the first time you install, can be a pain in the ass for the first hour - but you get to know everything thats contacting the outside world and can choose to allow or deny.

Malwarebytes

Small and powerful. Its faster than the others and won't fuck up your system in the process (see: Norton). It's great for older and slower computers that can't deal with heavy AVs. It's easily accessible, download it from the site and copy it to a flash drive and install it everywhere you need it (especially useful for infected machines). It's great for new infections, because the definitions are updated faster than the others (in one of the most recent cryptolockers, Malwarebytes update found it the day of, but others took a week or more)

Eset is the best

i do watchh shit loads of porn though. mostly pornhub and blacked dot com

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malvertising

Go to www.fastsupport.com, they have all sorts of plans that range from $99.99 to $599.99. What a deal! And it's a legit company!
