You should have read the rest of the article, and also those reports it references. It will cost about 20 billion dollars to just modernize the power grid enough to support that level of mining operations. Throwing in roads, equipment and support you're going to be spending about 100 billion dollars if you're looking to do more than haul coal and iron out. And it's going to take years to do all that. I doubt the senile Cheeto-in-Chief with ADHD is going to put in that kind of work.

3d printers are a (shitty undeveloped) step in the right direction. With the right equipment and schematics it is possible to print and assemble a working firearm. I'm waiting for civilian synthesising methods on the molecular scale. Drugs can't be illegal if anyone can make any of them at any time once they have synthesis details, people will do what they want. Military use of that same technology would be immense though so we won't even see prototypes until the next conflict. Wether we will then be able to secure our piece of the pie is on us.
