Can someone who knows musical theory tell me why JS Bach is so perfect?

I could pretty much listen to nothing but Bach for the rest of my life and be content.

I'm with you OP. Baroque era music is my favorite era of classical music to be honest. Also, to answer your question as best I can (I know music theory but probably not at the level that would be required to truly explain the harmonic changes in his music to you), I would say that it's because he was really big into writing multiple melody lines that would stack on top of each other and eventually swell together and lead into a different key signature and on and on and on and on until he resolves back to the original key. He does this type of thing with a lot of grace and finesse, also, so his work naturally comes out sounding really complex and beautiful.

Which is why I agree with this. Baroque is the shit. Perfect combination of intellectual depth, technical proficiency and emotion. I guess special things happen sometimes when you try to show the glory of God.

This is my ignorance speaking. Was Baroque music and Bach specifically not married to certain forms? It seems formalistic compared to Romantic, for instance, but I don't have a ton of exposure, or at least not enough to say.

Bach was ahead of his time certainly, and very enjoyable.

He's at his firm best when he does weird shit, tho, like Toccata and Fugue. it's not weird now, but in a historical context it was pretty fucking out there. most great composers are, really.

They're more transitional, yeah. They're the best Classical can come up with and I like their more later works (especially Beethoven) much more than early, so they're practically (proto-)Romantic composers.

Wouldn't necessarily complete agree but there definitely is some correlation between great art and love of the Christian God. At least in my Western filtered eyes, obviously.
