The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.
No it's the black one. The black metal one. Misterioso is p good Monk record, hardly better accompanied than in there.

I haven't made a chart in ages. Will do later. I'm about to drop a very high score on this one once I figure out how to write about it that seems like something you might dig too for some way out there jazz with some modern classical/Stockhausen flavor:
George Russell - Electronic Sonata for Souls Loved by Nature (1971)

New War on Drugs is shaping up to be nice. "Thinking of a Place" grew on me like you wouldn't believe. Loving that track.
Julian Evans
Some more quick updates -
Death Grips - Bottomless Pit
The last of the DG albums I hadn't heard aside from Government Plates. Super scattered compared to the rest, with moments of brilliance ("80808", "Eh", "Spikes") and... questionable moments I'll chock up to experimentation ("Hot Head", "Trash"). Wasn't expecting much considering its reputation so I won't say it's disappointing. But it's lacking something I've really loved from other DG releases that I can't pin down. I could see this being a grower though, especially given how much I liked the standouts.
3/5
SZA - CTRL
At the end of the day, this is a pretty standard R&B, with a little bit of an... alt flair. I can't say much about it is particularly inventive but the production is exactly what I like out of TDE. Little synths, keyboards and electronic elements that make it a lush, mellow listen. Lyrics are nice, production is solid and there's really no low point. SZA's voice is exactly what I like out of a female R&B singer too. Kind of reminds me of Badu for whatever reason even if it isn't quite in the same range.
Anyway, very very solid stuff.
3.5
Gong - Flying Teapot
Trippy, psychedelic prog with a lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek flair. Though it relies a little too much on this humorous approach, the instrumentation is pretty amazing and more than makes up for it.
The more I listen to prog, the more I start to realize what style I like. I either dig something in this vein with psych flair or a clean cut, semi-jazzy approach of Caravan or Camel. This is a prime example of the psych prog I like and it's something I'm sure to come back to very soon.
4/5

The Kinks - Face to Face (1966) >pop rock, mod
The halfway point between garagey mod and flouncy, overtly British baroque pop. Fourteen songs stretched over forty minutes makes for some tracks that go absolutely nowhere, especially on the a-side. Despite generally liking the Kinks, their psych/baroque pop is twee to a fault, and the prevalence of these dainty, flouncy songs nearly sinks the a-side. It does start off strong, with the effortless "Party Line", and the b-side is way more consistent, despite having an obvious best track in "Sunny Afternoon". I oughta dig more into these guys.
2.5+
Connor Clark
Rafael Lechowski & Glaç - Donde duele, inspira (2007-2011) (2011) >jazz rap, conscious hip hop
Not a jazz rap album in the Digable Planets/A Tribe Called Quest way, this is literally just a jazz album with some rapping over it. I can't really speak much about the rapping, considering it's in Spanish, but the dude has good flow despite not fitting terribly well over the instrumentals. The instrumentals are the album's strongest suit, it's occasionally too easy listening for my tastes, but it's composed very well and it doesn't forget to add some tasteful hip hop sensibilities without compromising its unique take on jazz.

re: new oxbow
you can start with new oxbow, it's probably the most approachable musically, although perhaps The Narcotic Story is an even better one to start off with as it's still one of their more accessible albums but also their best
complete guide is one of the best albums ever and dataplex is also great, the breadwinner and from what i remember space is only noise are a bit boring though
