terrible post

Post-punk had nothing to offer besides surface level variety. At least punk rock is good at what it does.

The punk, hardcore, grind, crust, d-beat, oi, powerviolence, etc. route is infinitely superior for understanding what punk rock was going for (aggressive, energetic, visceral) and optimized that in a variety of ways.

The post-punk, all the waves, gothic rock/deathrock, post-hardcore, etc. are all infinitely inferior since they lost sight of what punk rock was about musically, or were perhaps never actually inspired from the same scene. This is music that puts on a facade of sounding sophisticated when it's actually very simple music. It's proto-indie garbage. Like the indie-garbage it helped inspired, this kind of music gave up intricate songwriting/or energetic music that really touches the listener for the sake of atmosphere. But like not just indie, but all pop music forms that try to be atmospheric, it falls into the trap of being forced to implement pop music cliches that otherwise weakens the atmospheric focus many of these bands went for.

Post-punk is not a genre, nor are any of the waves. None of the artists involved with those "genres" in their prime considered themselves to be post-punk, or coldwave, etc. - they saw themselves as straight up punks (or in the case of some bands like Pere Ubu, garage rock), but with an artsier and/or darker edge. Post-punk is a made up term by John Peel that caught on after most of those movements died, and the term only really stuck when fashion obsessed kids in the 21st century thought these "post-punk" groups had a cooler aesthetics than the "other punks". You'll notice that any modern band that labels themselves post-punk fails to capture any sort of the originality or attempt to break away from the norm, but concede to all the established "post-punk" tropes (hurr we mix the bass high, wear suits and sunglasses and sing about anxious existentialism). There's a reason its /fa/'s favorite genre.

That said, the best punk genre is crust punk.

rec me some of this synthpop with elements of italo disco

listen to some early Kylie Minogue, Sabrina Salerno and Samantha Fox
