Is tipping bullshit?

Is tipping bullshit?
I always thought it was normal and use to like doing it.
Now I can't really think of a reason for it. Before it was just like the default thing to do. Questioning it would make me irrationally angry. I always figured they needed the tips to get by but why the fuck isn't their boss just paying them more? It's the same thing as the customer tipping them the money is coming from the customer to the boss to the employee. I mean if people want to tip that shouldn't even involve the boss it seems like tipping is actually costing people money since the bosses at these places won't increase the wage since they think the customers will just tip them to make up for it.

I see tipping as a reward for above average service, I only tip if I think they legitimately deserve it.

Now economically speaking, in order for employers to afford paying their employees more, they'd have to raise prices, so either way as a customer you end up having to pay more. Keep in mind that when you do tip you should use cash if possible, when you use a card that tip actually gets taxed.

Tipping in most cases is stupid, especially in first world countries. You only tip if a waiter/es treats you like a baby for at least two hours. Only exception are barbier, they need that 2 dollar extra for that service.

>Now economically speaking, in order for employers to afford paying their employees more, they'd have to raise prices
Alright this phrase getting repeated ad nasuem any time anyone talks about a business just makes me fucking sick, i swear my blood is going to boil. if you don't look at their fucking accounting books you can't difinitively say that for fact. then when you say it about these businesses with ceo's that get paid 4thousand times more than what employees do, no they wouldn't have to raise the prices they would just have to figure out how to juggle their fucking budget around.

Sometimes I tip if I like the waitress, sometimes I don't tip and don't give a fuck. I never had a situation that someone would have a problem with me not tipping. If I did, I'd laugh in their face for being insolent.

In america tipping is written into the minimum wage laws, those people get paid less assuming you'll tip. The jobs aren't minimum wage jobs, a good employee can get in excess of $20/hr while a shitty one can get tips so bad that the employer is forced to up it to minimum wage.

If you get shit service, don't tip. If you get decent service, understand 15% is the amount that their job is DESIGNED to operate at, at a minimum, and if you don't tip them you're cutting into their pay directly.

I usually round up and tell them to keep the change (unless they were really shit) Balls to all this 15% bullshit though.

> I always figured they needed the tips to get by but why the fuck isn't their boss just paying them more?

While I think tipping is messed up, I'll explain this part right here.

The reason restaurants pay servers a measly $3.something/hr is so (most of them) can provide lower food prices. Pay employees less, charge less for food. Some places take advantage though, paying the server minimum and still charging an arm and a leg for food.

It seems that tipping is mandatory in the US but here in the UK it's optional. We have a minimum wage that all employers must meet or exceed otherwise they face legal action.

Alcohol prohibition killed all the bars/restaurants so tipping was necessary back then, but then they never changed things back. The service industry has been living in a state of austerity and desolation that never adjusted back to normal and business owners fucking love it.

I worked for a chain restaurant franchise. The franchise owner gathered up all the managers from stores in the area and sat us down and showed us the books. She explained where every single penny goes and in the end, she only makes .02¢-.04¢ for every dollar.

Also, P&L statements noob.

But why would they juggle the books when they could just raise the prices? It's not like people would stop giving them money. Businesses do not care about customers, customer service only exists as a way of making more money by encouraging loyalty and repeat custom. Obviously it would be great if businesses paid employees more without raising prices but that won't happen unless people boycott and that will likely never happen.

>But why would they juggle the books when they could just raise the prices?
because they already have profits that get paid to the stock owners, and the stock owners are largely the fucking ceo's that are already making 4k times what the workers are

>companies flood the area with too many restaurants
>"why we make no money?"

But they don't care about the workers... They care about making as much money as possible for the higher ups.

I served when I was in college and you should tip, unless the your service was absolutely shit. If you don't tip you are cutting directly into someones pay. They did provide a service to you and the job is a lot harder then you think it is.

I didn't say it was an easy job.
If we're getting technical I'm not cutting into someones pay if I didn't tip. Their boss is responsible for paying them.

That's true the owner will pay them minimum wage if they don't make it in tips but If that continues for a couple pay cycles they will get fired because they aren't making enough.

Yes, totally.

actually yeah why are you saying im cutting into their pay if I don't tip? they're boss is the one cutting into their pay so they have to get tips. if anything that sounds like an argument why i shouldn't keep that place in business buying stuff there so someone else can buy or rent the spot for their business

Your cutting into their pay because that's how they make money, directly from those tips. And if you don't want to support restaurants that don't pay their servers minimum wage then I hope you only eat at chain places every sit down place does it. Your also making them pay for you to eat because they have to tip out to bartenders, bus boys, and kitchen staff if you don't tip then they are paying for you to eat every time you go there.
