way more complex than that. Ideally you should at least have a MA in psych and a BA in music theory before attempting ambient or else you're just wanking around.
experimenting and keeping it soft is the last thing you should do. You need to deliberately engineer sounds in the most minimal way such that the sine waves can crush a stranger. Listen to Afx's "Lichen" 100 times or so and you'll have made your first step into understanding ambient
