If they were magazines he could just pop them out and reload.
When I was in the Navy I got qualified on the M240G. You would have the gunner and then another person to reload. Since you have to reposition yourself every time you reload if it's not mounted.
Doing it himself would explain why it took him so long to reload.

The 240 is around 27 lbs. It is able to be disassembled, barrel removed, stock, trigger housing, bolt, bolt guide, gas tube, and gas regulator. A reload can be done easily within 30 seconds.

I have fired AK-47's they shot a tad slower then a belt fed . Also the bursts were inconsistent, they weren't 30 round magazines , the shooter was looking for more targets not changing magazines .
